An acquaintance of mine in Ohio set out to capture a solid deer/fireworks shot during July 4th weekend. Actually, a small group of us discussed how to best get this done, and a few of the people were on properties where there was a chance to see fireworks in the background. With some discussion they set up accordingly. One ended up with a nice sequence of about 7-8 shots of this buck with fireworks in it. Pretty good trail cam capture.

I sincerely doubt most hunters ever have their "ideal" hunt due to time, money, travel, family, age/physicality, etc. To be able to actually live it and go on the trip is a pretty big deal. Glad you were able to do that.

I need to get a quality midwest whitetail hunt out of my system before looking at other species. The farthest midwest I have hunted whitetails has been Ohio, and it's not enough to satisfy my drive. I'm also pretty committed to whitetail hunting over other game, specifically with a bow. That said, elk, a sheep hunt in the mountains (anywhere/anykind as long its a full curl ram), a bear hunt, and a cougar w/dogs hunt round out my top five NA hunts.

For 8-9 months of the year its non-huntingny.com and 2-3 its huntingny.com. Shame, really.

There are some leases available in that area by Cotton Hanlon. Not sure if that is a consideration, but I think there are Chemung Co or areas around there with the leases.

What's the earliest you've seeded brassicas here in NY?

And all that effort time and money goes down the drain. -
Money, land, and time are the mitigators to a bad hunter looking good. I know of a couple hunters who can't hunt themselves out of a paper bag skill wise, but the land they own, access, etc. results in a wall they wouldn't otherwise have based on their skills I suppose you could say finding the right land is part of hunting, but there are situations where its either dumb luck, heritage or otherwise. Someone who consistently shoots 2.5 yos on public in NY holds as much weight with me as some of the better hunters in the country that I discourse with. At the end of the day I try to learn from everyone, even if I have an impression they success is predicated largely on factors outside skill.

Letchworth didn't allow them after Livingston went. Places with draws or permit application processes, in my mind, probably wouldn't go rifle. Places with alot of non-hunting traffic...probably wouldn't get them either.

Grow - we're really not looking much for food options beyond December at this parcel. We couldn't plant enough forage if the entire acreage we hunt was one big brassica/WR/WW plot to get the deer through winter in that area. Rape tends to be grazed prior to turnips so that's why we went with that. It's more or less a hopeful way to set up a bed to food to bed pattern that can be hunted later in season. -
The corn next door to my house is shoulder high already. A couple low spots from water, but it looks good.

We have bare ground right now...not ideal conditions but had to disc it due to timing. Trying to determine seeding timeframes. I still think we're a little early for our area for athena rape and daikon. Cornell has our avg. first frost between Oct. 10 and 20. Would like to make it to last weekend in July before seeding them both and prefer not to make two separate trips to do the rape before the radish. -

Split...your DER did OK when planted July 15? -
Haha...thanks everyone. One day older and one day smarter. I hope, at least.

Fishing, too. Most people usually bought the combo that included it. But, only a small fraction of people ice fish or fish late fall, so I suspect a portion of the revenue "drop" is actually more of delayed revenue as anglers buy their fishing licenses separately and in the Spring, now. It's akin to changing how a business recognizes revenue (cash to accrual) and its impact on the financials. I wasn't sure if I was getting out to ice fish this winter, so I didn't buy my fishing license until springtime. That's 6 mos (and a calendar year later)....that impacts revenue claims.

Virginia outlawed urine use for deer hunting. It'll be interesting to see if he is being remunerated for the deer.

Don't kid yourself, that's political navigation to drive even more change "in their image." It'll just further their agenda to create added seasons and tags, etc.

There are some lookers on the US team. It was a good game, too. The women's team is pretty technical for being much more known specifically for defense and power.

And you thought this year was bad for Spring turkey
phade replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Turkey Hunting
My spring hunting has been reduced to just a few days total now...3 or 4 tops....and 2 of them are practically a guy's weekend getaway Sackett's Harbor area. -
PS... fix the "heard" to "herd." VARIETY From the summer growing months into hunting season and throughout winter, our blends are specifically formulated to hold deer and provide the optimum forage for a healthy deer heard.

FMJs are tough as can be. I don't change arrows often on purpose, but when my current stockpile of Epic Sts are gone...FMJs all the way.

One cam company to sell seems like a recipe for trouble because it's a KBD (key business dependency) situation. Probably need three lines with a range of price/performance options and some overlap to withstand product and/or distributor issues. Nothing like selling one line and a client has issues and you have no other recourse to keep the business, or a delay in product leaves you high and dry to service the client. I would suspect you should look at Reconyx and two lines with a wide ranges of cams. Your customers are likely going to be higher income/disposable income considering its a seed business. That means you probably need to maximize profit on lower volume sales first and foremost and have options to present lower if need be. The other two lines...there's not much differentiation amongst Covert, Moultrie, Browning, Bushnell/Primos, etc.Whatever terms that are favorable from a profit/relationship perspective is probably what you should consider there. It's nice to be client-centric, but at the end of the day you need to be in the black, and there's no one or two brands that leap out over the others with regard to differentiation. Alot of web-based cam sellers have gone under this past year - I can think of two major ones right now and that's just what comes to mind. Other than Brick and Mortar sellers (who also have online), consumers are starting to really hunt for deals because market innovation has started to plateau and many buyers are becoming aware of the brand or models that are superstars and good buys, which are not determined until after the cam has been out a while and is not something a web-based retailer can hedge. Or vice-versa with poor cams. Examples of this include 2012 Coverts, 2013 Browning Recon Force and Moultrie 8 and 900 series and the 2014 Stealth G42 (can't believe I am saying that) on the good side....on the other end, the entire 2014 line of Moultrie was a complete utter failure (avoid like the plague if more than $50). Since many consumers are becoming aware of this, web-based sellers are challenged. They are more likely be saddled with a bad line and stock (if not selling direct ship). Imagine if you chose Moultrie as your lone supplier and you had a wad of 2014s? Ouch. I've been directly involved with two cam companies with regard to prostaffing and also product development. I've often thought about an online cam retail business model and every model I build comes up a loser long-term if its not a full-time, all-in approach, right away. It's not a part-time, supplemental business. These are the ones that have gone under, specifically. TCP is probably the best model because their prices suck, but add a supplemental warranty and provide in-depth reviews (biased as hell, but still), and took an "authority" approach. They're a full-time gig though, with electrical engineers on contract. Most start-up cam companies are not getting into the retail channel yet. Probably wise to build relationships there and be the first in the door in a year or two once the sink or swim has been determined.

Humans are way more likely to be dangerous to hunting that any natural causation. The chances of a colony-collapse-esque issue from a natural genesis as it relates to deer is minor compared to anything us idiots can accomplish.
