What part of Livingston? It's dead in my neck of the woods...(northern section). Heard to gobbles last week and that was about it.

They certainly should be paid akin to state troopers.

Have a solid lead on a bow-only lease (as in it's bow only by law due to village location) and a small parcel for gun/bow/mz. It's promising based on aerials with two creek and a creek bottom woodline. It'll absolutely house deer once gun season starts as they pour in from the adjacent lands that are gun-huntable across the street. Second land is open for all seasons. Have two people in lease. Looking possibly for third for one or both leases. Bow only parcel totals 132 acres. (Wyoming Co.) Other parcel is 43 acres. (south central Livingston Co.) Landowner is by the book and solid. I would be the leaseholder and can add lease members as I deem fit. I will NOT charge a third member more for their share (as in, I pay the same rate). Owner is a former hunter who is too old to hunt. He owns 10 plus parcels and of them all he said he would hunt the bow-only piece above all others. Trying to put together an offer now. Cost has not been determined yet, but it should not be huge. I am looking at offering about 1,600 for both pieces....putting thirds at $500 and some change per person. It's year-round access (being responsible). He may well go for both pieces at that price. Please PM if interested.

I like the Treelimb. Got a steal on one of their premiums...worth it when compared to prices of other comprable models (Fuse, etc.). I have both the standard and the premium...premium is much better. -
X2. Id be all for dropping the age to 10, with direct parental supervision required to the age of 14 and indirect until the age of 16. There are states out there that allow younger than 10 even. BTW, I already sent my emails in to support the bill. Is there a central e-mail to send support to? You have to send them to your area reps, I have the email addys for mine saved. You can google them. E-mail sent to my rep in support.

SUPER- but remember those words next time you have that SUPER BUCK of a lifetime show himself to you and next thing you know, here comes dad and his gabby jaw-jacking 12 yr old along under your stand and Jr's bearing down on tree stumps and chipmunks. > Wow. I don't think a person worth their salt would be ticked at a kid and a father sharing quality time in such fashion, especially if legal. I think the problem is you (ie the hunter on a buck). Some people's priorities and interpretations are all kinds of twisted - and that'd be one of them. I think plenty more kids (or people hurt by kids) get hurt playing pee-wee than hunting (numerical and percentage).

I started hunting in Virginia at age 12 with a 12 gauge Mossberg. I feel strongly about youths and getting them involved - especially prior to other sports, cars, and grils (or boys) get on their minds. My pops and I don't see eye to eye on much and we don't have the best relationship, but he was a casual hunter. The best thing he ever did for me was get me that mossberg, camo me up, and put me in the woods right under a roosted turkey (unknowingly) on opening morning in 1993. Hunted with six people that day, two of us were 12. Mark, Mark, Geno, Shane, Charlie, and myself. I can vividly remember all the details at Chickahominy State Forest. There was plenty of education and safety involved, and even a deer sighting or two. Next weekend, I was a stander for running dogs with a group led by the county game warden. My family life fell apart shortly after that for the next 5-6 years. Him taking me hunting at age 12 was one of the biggest impacts on my life. And it was positive in so many ways. Hunting became one of the very few things that my Dad and I could do together. I'm more than accepting of such a new law. The parent knows their child best and when they are ready to go in the woods - they can use such law to allow them to make such a decision.

First time ever hunting. Ever. Sat about five-10 feet under a perched turkey and I didn't know. When that thing came down...I about lost it. Hunted in an overgrown 4-5 acre homestead in VA amongst thousands of acres of a wooded tract that had a graveyard. Pretty creepy when the fog rolled in. Apple trees in there were still dropping and that homestead had to be 100-150 yo...great spot. Just lifted your hair a bit from time to time.

So, are you asking for a donation of a bow, or a reduced price somehow? It certainly is a challenging situation that you both have endured. If you do not know if you're ever going to hunt again, can you sell your bow and get the funds for her to have one? What type of bow do you have? You might be able to sell yours for a lower model bow that will give you cash to pick up one for the future wife as well. Did the bow you purchased for your wife that you mentioned in an earlier thread not come in, or fall through? Best of luck.

Since I started carrying vaseline in the truck with me, it doesn't hurt nearly as bad. ;D (twisted...) It's starting to pinch me now...I try to consolidate trips more...trying to knock out grocies with maybe a stop at gander on the way back from work rather than making a weekend trip to each place.

I've heard a few people say they didnt like it, but I've had GREAT luck with Gander Mtn's Tech20 stuff... I have the original version (I think they have two different liner options now). Uninsulated, breathes about as well as rain gear can (which is a misnomer), and blocks the wind like whoah. It's actually really quiet, too. I use it as an outer layer when it's windy or there's cool winds because I've found that it's actually better at blocking wind than my fleece midseason gear. And, they've been durable...I have to be on my 5th season with it.

Light Base Layer Recommendations?
phade replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I don't invest a ton of money in early season stuff because it's so hit or miss here in NY...sometime opening day is frigid. But, I do have two pairs of base layers...one is the green X Scent and the other is the Bass Pro UA-type gear....I forget it's name. I think each set cost me about $30 on sale. The Xscent is nice, but its more of a loose fit and I tend to wear it when it's slight more cool, even though its lightweight stuff. The BPS stuff is form fitting. I use it quite a bit throughout the season as it wicks well. -

new york to tax bikes?
phade replied to G-Man's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Snowmobiles are a good example...they're already a HUGE impact on hunting seasons and legislation....giving them more of a financial position and that just become worse for hunters. You'll be creating the same groups for each respective hobby if you start charging...less voice in a bigger crowd is not usually a recipe for success in this situation. I agree with your position and reasoning, but the implications outweigh the cost increase imo. -
new york to tax bikes?
phade replied to G-Man's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I think the bike registration idea is bad just because its not practical. But, be careful about asking the hikers, bikers, bird watchers, etc. to start toting the load. Start charging them and hunting will start to have less of a say in things (relatively speaking). -
Anyone buy a refurbished scope? Buying a cheap (Savage Edge/Axis) deer rifle for occassional use range shooting and about 5-10 hunts a season. They have kits that come with scopes from Bushnell/Tasco, but they're pretty cheapish. They'd probably do the job, but I had been looking at a Redfield scope from Natchez when I came across their refurbed Nikon ProStaffs for $100. I'm curious to see if anyone has had a refurbed scope and how they've done with it.

I think from what ive been told, gary focuses on bowhunts/crossbow hunts now on his ground. Someone said he may do gun on certain public land, but they told me he only takes arrow slingin' now for hogs.

Imagine if you had land in 8c and another one of those four units...that's one bow/mz either sex tag, one reg buck tag, and one each for the two Bonus units. That's four bucks in one season! Chances are low for all that to happen, but it's possible. I know one guy who stopped gun hunting because he had two honey holes within 8c and he drops 2-3 nice bucks a year there.

Bonus DMPs Bonus DMPs will be issued to increase hunter participation and deer harvest in four Wildlife Management Units (1C, 3S, 4J and 8C). "Bonus Permits" will be available to hunters who take an antlerless deer in one of those units on a Deer Management Permit (DMP) or a Bonus DMP for that unit. Bonus DMPs may be used only in the Unit for which they are issued and will be valid for a deer of either sex. Bonus DMPs that are used to take an antlerless deer may be replaced with another "Bonus DMP". Bonus DMPs used to take an antlered deer will not be replaced. No fee will be charged for the Bonus DMP. Bonus DMPs are not transferable. To obtain a Bonus DMP, hunters must comply with the following application requirements: The head (NOT frozen) or whole carcass of an antlerless deer taken on a Deer Management Permit or Bonus DMP for one of the above WMUs, and the completed DMP Report Tag (the smaller part) must be brought by the successful hunter to the appropriate checking location listed below. Upon completion of a biological check and collection of harvest information, a Bonus DMP for the same unit will be issued.
-
They're not buck tags persay, they are acutally Bonus DMP/Bonus Permits - either sex, not just for a buck. You are right about that. Not technically the new season.
-
Hunter's can put a 170" or a 200" or a 100" or any buck of their liking on a Bonus DMP/Bonus Permit where they are issued. Completely 100 percent legal. I think you may be confusing a DMP from a Bonus DMP/Bonus Permit.
-
Where Bonus DMP/Bonus Permits are issued.
-
And this can be done how? Bonus DMP/Bonus Permit.
-
You can actually shoot more than two legal bucks with current year tags (no carryover) in NY in the right circumstances. It's not common because of land access, but it can be done. I've met a few who are lucky enough to take three bucks in a season on one year's tags. Add in the previous year deal in the NZ, and you are up to 4. It may even be possible for more, but the circumstances are likely not very common.
