That's a real nice 9 with some character.

That's crazy, reminds me of a day like today. I sat till 11 and it got real windy like it is today and it was warm too. I went to put up some posted signs, was within 20 yards from one of my stands in the corner of a woods....when I look in and see a 120 inch buck walking up through the woods and going right past my stand. You just never know when you'll see a nice one in mid Nov.

It's been quiet on this thread..... I know some nice bucks have been taken in the park this past week, but none by me. I sat all day on Monday, and saw a spike and a doe. (poor choice of days to take off, just too warm). I plan to sit all day Friday and hope to get a crack at one. Temps will be much colder so it should be good for the last weekend.

That's a nice bunch of photo's, lot's of game in that area. I really like the shot of the grey fox.

I wash everything in All Free & Clear scent free laundry detergent year round, no scent in my drier. Then store my cloths in a air tight container. I spray down all my gear with scent killer odorless formual as well. Then I like to hang my gear outdoors here in the country air. Day prior to hunt, I keep to bland foods to keep my stomach settled. Day of hunt I brush my teeth with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. I shower in scent free anti bacterial soap, and use scent killer anti antiperspirant. I dress outside in my garage, which has no gasoline or other such odor items stored in it. Also, what I bring in the woods is considered, like foods. I'll bring apples, nuts and water.....kind of like baiting really. Honestly, I do all that and more, but the deer will still wind me. I just try to keep my odor to a minimum and have confidence that the deer will have a harder time picking up my scent and when I'm walking to and from my stand, I'm leaving as little human scent as possible, which will help keep my presence to a minimum.

I wish I had some with me this morning. Pretty quiet so far, had a spike and a lone doe come by. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I missed that, and stand corrected... so thanks for clearing it up FSW! So yes, crossbow is cool if you have a lottery tag.

Sounds like you are looking at the Regular Season Permit.....which is for gun season....and you can use a crossbow, bow or gun. You may want to call the park on bow season regs....I know I am to double check. You don't want to risk future park privileges over breaking a rule. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anywhere else in the state you can use a crossbow the last 2 weeks of bow season. Letchworth has it worded funny, so I called them and the confirmed...... that there is no use of crossbows during bow season,.... (at least this year anyways). The last sentence on #3 of the Archery permit reads: "This permit includes the usage of Crossbow during the late muzzeloader season only." You'd think they would just say something like: No crossbows allowed during archery season, like they say, no rifles allowed during gun season. And one would also think they would write on the permit......the fact that there are no longer antler restrictions in place.....since they've been in place in the park for about 10 years now.....just sayin'.

Just looked at the park regs again. I would say you are correct..... there is no mention of antler restrictions this year. It's been in place so long, and they don't mention that they lifted the restriction.. (but the regs are poorly written inmho). They also are not allowing crossbow in the archery and gun seasons, only during muzz are they allowed.

The weather pattern is holding and winds continue to be mostly North westerly for the next week. I hunted the last 3 hours yesterday, I saw a 3 pt and a button, then passed an 8 point. He came by and made a rub, then pawed at the ground and just hung around for about 5 minutes, so I got a good look at him. He looked to be a 1.5, perfect shaped basket rack, 13" wide. Hope he sneaks by till next year. No chasing to be seen or heard where I sat.

Every year is different from what I've seen the last few years. Three years ago on Oct 31 we had a ton of big buck sightings in our area and I saw a beauty at 2 in the afternoon on a 65F day, then it quieted down a few days later. Two years ago I saw a bunch of big ones on Nov 14th and 15, the week before gun, but it had been quiet up until then. Last year was spotty. This season so far has been quiet as far as seeing mature bucks roaming during daylight hours for me. So, it has to kick in any day now. I know one thing.........I used to think the first week of Nov is the week to take vacation, but I'm changing that to the second week of November. It sure takes patience!!!

I saw a few small bucks chasing does on Monday morning and evening. Sat all day and it was pretty quiet. The sad part was.....I walked in 2 miles to get to my stand, just get to the stand and another guy comes into a stand 100 yards away. Luckily he left by 9am......but that's state land hunting. I hope to be out there the next 4 days.

How do you pass the time on all day sits???
genesee_mohican replied to BBDEric's topic in Bow Hunting
I got a working smart phone this year so I can pass time reading the news ect....but am worried it will come back to bite me so I am limiting it. I'd hate to have a shooter slip by me I think about what deer movement I'm seeing and what changes I need to make, then send myself notes. I glass a lot and look for deer, binos are a must. I take pictures and watch the birds. I bring good food and eat, along with plenty of water. You don't want to get tired on an all day sit....and it does take a lot of energy to sit up in a tree all day. I guess mainly I just sit, keep watch and think. It's great to have that time to just relax and think about what ever comes to mind, without distractions and the clutter of noise that we deal with most other days. -
Here in 8M I'm seeing only young bucks chasing and the bigger buck photos I'm seeing on my cameras as well as others in the area are after dark. In riding around I'm seeing doe families out feeding peacefully with no bucks chasing. So, I originally had planned to take this week off...but have held off and am waiting to see what happens this weekend. With that said....I'm sure there are doe coming into heat now and big bucks are being taken. You just have to be in the right place at the right time.
-
Sure wish I was out there this am. Frosty cold and very light winds. I decided to work and save the day for next week because I just think the main chasing is a few days off yet. It's a crap shoot.

Yep, been there a bunch a times. Be glad for the encounter n the best of the bow season is still ahead.

I'd give it 4-5 hrs....when you do go in and pick up the trail, just go real super slow and quiet....like you would if stalking a deer. That way... IF he is alive you can get close for more clues if he continues on.
