Maybe the wind swirled just enough and they caught a touch of your scent. OR, perhaps there was coyote nearby that spooked them.

now that made me laugh

first pic, looks like he's 1.4 year old. Bottom pic looks like a different buck.

To Let The Woods Rest Or To Not Let The Woods Rest
genesee_mohican replied to DirtTime's topic in Bow Hunting
I put up a new stand on on Sat, but won't hunt it till the first week of Nov. I will still scout and check cams, paying attention to the wind, and I do a lot of things that minimize the amount of scent I leave behind. -
I'm penciled in for the week of Halloween and first week of Nov. Then the first week of gun. I may sneak out a few days during the second week of Nov too. Who am I kidding? I want to be in the wood every single day of November. The desire to deer hunt kind of explodes and that's all I can think of in Nov. The leaves begin to drop and you just get those days where you feel it, and know you can't go wrong being out there!

View from Pittsford - Mendon Stand
genesee_mohican replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
Looks like a sweet stand to kick back in for sure. A great view with lots of action. Thanks for sharing and good luck there. -
Nice looking deer and typical of what I see here by the park. With your place only having a few acres of woods or cover, surrounded by fields, it might be difficult to have deer stay on the property, unless you just don't walk around on it much at all. But congrats on the new property and good luck with your endeavors there!! Is it on the west side of the park or east ?

Do you know what stand on opening day...
genesee_mohican replied to growalot's topic in Deer Hunting
It's always a game time decision based on the weather. I have quit a few choices and am thinking a few days ahead to and how I want to use my stands. I'm sure glad the opener falls on Saturday this year! -
Down to two weeks now. I forgot how hard it is to put up a new stand, especially a hang on. Putting up another one today in some thicker cover and hoping the rain storms I see on radar will wash away any scent I leave behind. It's a good looking spot and I'll be looking forward to putting some time in there.

I missed that part too! My bad. I would say they are most likely the same deer. I like the way his tips curl up in front, cool rack. Good luck in catching up with him in the field G-Man!

Here is a tip, take it or leave it. From my experience with public lands that hold a lot of deer, the hunting pressure decreases the farther away from the road you trek. I have found that doing a lot of winter scouting in the off season helps too. You can find out where others are hunting, and seek out a good place 2 miles off the road that maybe is a little hard to get to but looks really good. Once hunting pressure starts, the deer head deeper into the woods to avoid hunters, so it can work out in your favor. Good luck.

I will say they are two different bucks based on 2 things. 1) The top photo shows a long brow tine on his right side. 2) The bottom photo shows what appears to be a sticker on the G-3 of his right side.

That'll get the hear beating a bit. Hope you cross paths with him this season.

The moment after you pull the trigger.

I always whisper while communicating with a hunting partner in the deer woods. It's amazing to be able to hear other hunters talking 1000 yards away on a quiet day. -
Great looking deer, I hope you get a crack at that nice 10.
-
Not another one! I hope it goes as smoothly as possible for you.

No new equipment or land news, just a lot of time in the woods scouting since January. I scouted new state land last winter and spring and am looking forward to a few new stand locations this year. I've had 4 trail cameras out in this area since mid July and am encouraged to see some nice looking deer. Had the local bow shop put new cables and strings on my 13 year old Parker bow, and it's shooting real well.

CENTERPOINT SNIPER 370 CROSSBOW REVIEW
genesee_mohican replied to TheFieldArcher's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I've read up on this one quite a bit. It has a 5 year warranty, it's fast, it's very quiet, easy on the wallet although I'd buy better bolts and maybe even a better scope. -
The prevailing wind direction here in central Livingston Co is SW, so most of my stands are set up to have an entry based on that. Then if the wind is south, west or north I can vary my approach.

I invested in a good range finder years ago and use it on every hunt. First thing I do when I get into place is to range landmarks and get a feel for the distances.
-
Yeah, love that 10 pointer, neat looking rack and deer.

Any day spent in the stand between the start to the end of the season is time well spent, because you just never know when it will happen. A doe could come into estrous anytime between October to mid January. But deer move less during the day when it's warm for the most part. If I could line a day to hunt, I'd choose days following a cold front where the temps have dropped significantly and the barometric pressure is above 30 inches with calm winds. The last few hours of a rain system passing through are another favorite for me when I've seen really good deer movement. I'll watch the radar, put on the rain gear and head out to try and catch that for sure. This is not to say deer don't move when it's warm, and I'll gladly hunt those days too as I've seen some really nice bucks walking around on 70 degree days during the rut, especially during mid day. I think the theory there is, they were up most of the night while it was cool, then laid down just before we get to our stands. After resting all morning, they get the urge to take a walk and look for a hot doe again around mid day. This is why I like to stay in my stand all day mid rut when the odds are there.

Maybe drag downhill a few hundred yards in the snow. Otherwise I'll use a game cart or quarter the beast and pack it out with one or more helpers. Heck, you can have a beer while you do it.
