Deer hunting in Tompkins County DMFA January 13-31, 2018
OtiscoPaul replied to goosifer's topic in Deer Hunting
I have access to some private it’s tough hunting that time of year I harvested regular season doe down in dmfa that was it. -
Final quarter of the year to do unless I do some dmfa...even then a late late season score is not so easy. Gonna try to add some foul into the mix starting tomorrow am 20 day aged looks nice

I like young deer (yearling does) and any warm tenderloin fresh as the pinnacle of venison flavor personally But I do like to age the quarters in big deer and the straps on bucks so the meat gets “dry” and easier to handle with the knife. I think the main thing with whitetail venison is to keep it drained and dry including when you defrost it, I use paper towels and change them often...better yet souse vide no defrost needed. I better get used to talking about deer hunting instead of doing it...stupid heavy rain chased me out of the woods Man that sausage looks good TF -

Finished up everything but this last hind and had a fresh cut 16 day aged sirloin... Drummed up some liquid motivation to take the bow out and fill a late dmp. Last hunt of the season I think -

Crappy sounds like you may have caught liver on the back end let him there til almost 10-11pm and then go get him where you saw him lay down Nice late season action! -
Certainly does make a nice gun rack...I saw one that wide in the woods once couldn’t get drawn as he walked right under me but it was a heavier 6 (in my mind anyway, ha).

It won’t give you the time, but if you use the HuntFishNY app it shows you all of your reported harvests from like 2011...pretty cool. I like reporting in the field before the knife comes out...take that ranger Rick.

NY Bow Bucks The public’s: 11/03 2013 9:30 am to fresh doe piss 11/15 2015 4:30 pm to fresh piss 10/28 2018 7:30 am rattle/grunt to fresh piss The back yard: 11/06 2019 2:30 pm rattle/grunt to 2d doe deek and fresh piss (Haven’t gotten this mount back from my pop yet) Several missed opportunities on rattle/grunt sequences w/fresh piss and the deek over the years...2 of those in 2016 on a buck I’m still hunting (I hope). I prefer AM hunts and detest all-day sits so mid-days are reserved for early November and pms are a matter of convenience/opportunity. Even so a pretty even distribution fir my buck harvests and sightings in general. edit: I know it looks like I didn’t sign that tag I did but it was scratched in with a dead pen and blood coated then I guess my pop cleaned it off fir me ha...the other tag is from last years buck, ha

Easiest so far, compared to the first/male child she was a nightmare fir 2 straight years. It’s just that I’ve seen TF hunting w/his daughter through the past several seasons followed up with nutcracker features and figure he must have a degree in daughter raising... ...ladder/roof safety not so much -

There is shooting going on at every corner of the lake sounds like a typical gun opener after a very quiet year...might be a real good day good luck again edit...just realized it could be ducks but the first couple sets were first light deer id guess...1 gun, some space between shots -

I’m with moho on this...stand is a 5 minute walk from my front door but zip for motivation, not even sit in the woods in the snow motivation.... I think it’s just gun season I’m tired of...gonna use this extra energy to shoot my bow a bit with my heaviest clothes on as it’s supposed to be super cold here after a brief rainy warm up. Good luck everyone out there seems like a great morning for dropping deer. -
Pines, wind (snow drift) buffers and yarded up in big groups so feast or famine in terms of sightings the later in season it gets in my own observations.

This happened 2 miles as the crow flies from the county parcels I hunt in bow season or occasional weekdays in December. Just found out about it yesterday when my buddy told me after I gave him my routine safety lecture people endure when they gun hunt with me. 1 of the many reasons I prefer bow season

I have some sweet uphill skiing alpine touring gear I used it one season for late season hunting and i seen zero...with xcountry gear you prolly would wanna pack snow shoes incase you get one or need to get burly uphill. these pics are from a 5’ February in 2015...I skiid 3/4 mile across the lake up 500 ft of lake bank vertical and down switchbacks and thru trees several runs a session it was fun

That was a busy day at the butcher shop or that bird would gave been evenly brown...I did the deers skin job after the bird went in the oven. Speaking of that deer I took it back to the shed again and made a good sled run fir my kids in the process...I hope those temps stay closer to 30 than 28. Quartering in the morning and getting the block and knives out tomorrow regardless.
