  1. It just depends on where you go. The further you are from a large city the cheaper the land and the taxes are generally. I can find parcel after parcel in his area that go for about the same taxes per acre. Heck, I just bought 20 acres out that way this year and my total tax bill (county and school) will be around $400 with no exemptions. Multiply that by ten on both sides and you have about $4000 for 200 acres. Not to far off of what the land across the road goes for. Just look around for areas where there are good deals... you don't have to pay 3-5k per acre if you are willing to be further away from "civilization".
  2. You might be surprised. I know the land across the road from my fathers house was for sale a while ago so I looked the info up. No buildings on it, but also no exemptions claimed and for 220 acres of woods the taxes were under $1700 per year for county tax, and I'm assuming school tax was bout the same.
  3. So, with the busy season winding down here in FL, I'm starting to work on this a bit. I took it into work and cut the blade out of the blank with the plasma cutter. Holy cow is that nice... I'll post a pic up later but if anyone else is doing this one recommendation... cut it about 1/8" larger than you actually want on all sides and then grind down. If your hand goes just a little bit outside your lines and you are cutting when you want the blade, there is no going back. Luckily, I got that advice from the guy who trained me on the plasma cutter and everything came out okay. I have a dove hunt Saturday, going to the Keys Sunday for lobster and some spearfishing. Next weekend is the last open weekend for alligator season, so after that I'll be making much more progress on the blade. Hoping to have it all finished up around X-Mas time, but we will see how that goes.
  4. Bumping this up. Has anyone been out that way yet this fall to see what the damage is?
  5. Glad it helped. That's how I make sure that the properties I'm hunting are in the correct WMU to use my doe tags.
  6. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html If you click on the "Layers" button, you can check the box by "Wildlife Management Unit". Once checked, just zoom in on the area in question and problem solved.
  7. My buddy Archer and I down in the keys. The rest of my pets live in a glass box. 180 gallon reef tank.
  8. Hmm, now that there is a pic there is no way that it is a persimmon. No idea what that one is.
  9. Well, there is no pic, but from the brief description I would guess maybe a persimmon?
  10. The only show I watch is Meat Eater. The other 99% of hunting shows out there are just hornography, and about as real a depiction of hunting as that other word that rhymes with it is of... well you know.
  11. Apple butter is one of my favorite ways to use up a surplus of apples. We made a bunch in the crock pot last year and are still enjoying the last of it.
  12. If you want to get another gun, go for it. From what you have said though, you have at least a .243, 30/06 and 30-30. Those three rifles will treat you well in NY. The .243 would be a little light IMO for black bear, but if you decide you want to go after one then just bring one of the other two rifles along and you are set.
  13. It should be titled, "What are the 10 worst states for a fair weathered trophy hunter?"
  14. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html#deer 2015 - NZ bow for deer opens the 27th.
  15. Are yours cold when they are going into the smoker? Cold meat will form creosote on the outside, leaving a bitter taste. To avoid this, take them out of the fridge 45 min before going into the smoker and let them warm up to room temp.
  16. Do you hunting deer or numbers? That is a beautiful buck, who cares what it scores.
  17. Yep, I had this happen. Spray it with scent away when you put it out and it might help.
  18. Panthers are the same thing as Cougar/Mountain Lion. You are thinking Jaguar.
  19. How did Papist not hear about that in some obscure news blog and post it all over the forum with a title having something to do with illegal aliens, socialists, terrorists and the end of the world?
  20. We are starting to think about what to plant in our garden in 2 months when the season is finally right. Down here in S. FL our growing season generally starts in early November. We are thinking a bed of beets for pickling and a bed of cabbage for kraut, plus the usual hot peppers and tomatoes.
  21. At an old job we used a Kawasaki Mule for just about everything. It was the model with the dump bed and it was convertible from 2-4 seats. Was really handy, and I don't think we found anything it couldn't do. One day we got a F150 stuck in one of the aquaculture ponds (don't ask) and we were able to get it unstuck with a good yank from the Mule.
  22. If it has to work for ticks I'm not sure, but I can tell you a Thermocell works wonders for mosquitoes. I was sitting in the middle of a 78,000 acre swamp this weekend for muzzleloader season and didn't get one bite while in the stand. Didn't get to shoot any deer, but saw 9 does and a Florida Panther Kitten.
  23. Because the only want the population reduced in certain areas, not across the state.
  24. It has also been shown to increase the prevalence of Lyme Disease and ticks in general: http://nativeplantwildlifegarden.com/more-findings-on-the-link-between-japanese-barberry-and-lyme-disease/
