Still hard to tell even with the zoomed in picture, but it looks like it might be changing over from winter coat to summer coat to me.

It's all good...I have a friend who is a forester and another who works in the woods for one of the largest log buyers in the state, so I am fortunate to be pretty keyed in to logging in the park. I was just trying to make sure that the OP didn't wander on to private property and get himself in hot water. I would love to see the state do selective logging on state lands- it would be a boost for local economies, put more money in the state budget (to be wasted) and provide more food for the animals. No way that will ever happen with the APA in place and I am sure that the state would find a way to mess that up.
-
Really? Can you give me some examples? I have never seen nor heard of any logging being permitted on state land in the Adirondack Park.
-
I have hunted the ADKs my entire life and the only advice that I can give you is to be patient. If you run into logging, it will be on private land as there is no logging allowed on state land. Therein lies the problem....finding food. Deer densities are low and the ones that are there tend to gravitate towards private land where the food is more plentiful. That's not to say that there are no nice bucks on state land, but be prepared to put in a lot of work in order to find one and be ready to shoot because they often surprise you when you see one. They don't stick around long for a shot. There home ranges are also a lot bigger than those that live in areas that have more food. I now lease some land with a couple of buddies in the Finger Lakes and am happy to actually see deer as there have been many years that I have eaten tag soup and the only deer that I saw were does.

Pulled venison in the crock pot.

Although this will be of no use for you First-light....I like to can it and make it that way...more work on the front end, but easy on the back end as it just needs to be warmed up in a skillet with whatever bbq sauce that you like. Takes all of 5 minutes. +3 on the slaw.... -
Great read...nice beard!

Jeez Loiuse Wooly...your shots are absolutely amazing...a highlight for me while on this site....and I agree with alloutdoors- that first shot of the second series is outstanding!

We had a female beagle when I was a kid. On more than one occasion we couldn't get her off a track by dark and you could go out at midnight and still hear her running rabbits. She would go and go until she must have finally gotten hungry and headed home. And as was mentioned before, she basically listened when she wanted to. If you would call her to come, she would go the other way for about 50 yards, wait until you closed the distance to ten yards or so and then she'd head away from you again. She was a great pet and hunting dog, though, and she is surely missed (mostly by my dad who's health keeps him from hunting any more, otherwise he'd have another beagle for sure).

New proposed tax on guns

I guess that we should now have a tax on all car purchases too... http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/osu-parade-driver-history-mental-illness-attorney-article-1.2411165 -
New proposed tax on guns
adkhunter71 posted a topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
A NY congresswoman is proposing a new $100 tax on all gun sales to go towards anti violence and mental health. I think that the money will be going to her and her colleagues who think that this is a good idea because they are crazy. Nothing like shifting blame. What ever happened to personal accountability? http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/bill-slap-100-tax-gun-sales-heads-congress-article-1.2411715 -
Nice bucks! What do you suppose the two in the first couple of pictures are looking at? They both seem to be looking in the same direction. Coincidence?

Try walking to your stand with just your long john top on while carrying your other layers in your pack. I have found that if I wear everything that I have, I work up a sweat before getting to my stand and become cold much more quickly. Then while on stand, add more layers as you get colder.

Thanks, Phade. I really appreciate your advice and willingness to help people (not only on this issue, but on most things you comment on). You are a great asset to everyone who uses this forum. -
Browning Strike Force HD

I have two of these with the same issue. At first, one of them worked at night while the other one didn't. Now they both are showing black night time pics. Using lithium batteries and the battery indicator on the camera shows "100%". You think that this the array issue and not the batteries? I appreciate all of your posts both on here and at the hunting beast, by the way. -
Thanks for the heads up on this...you just made my day

Hunt App by onXmaps is pretty good. It costs $29.99 a year, but I think that you can try it for free. It has a lot of cool features like public and private land ownership and property boundaries, topo and aerial views, the ability to mark waypoints and also shows which WMU you are in.

I'm with Grizz...I like the old version better..just seemed more user friendly.

Is Verizon anti-hunting?
adkhunter71 posted a topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Pretty strong evidence that they are below: Last month when they cancelled the Sportsman channel they said “difficult decision to remove channels that the vast majority of our customers do not spend a lot of time watching, particularly where suitable alternatives exist.” Last night they dropped the Outdoor Channel because, as they say, "Each year, the cost of content increases substantially, and in order to prevent those costs from being reflected on your bill, it is sometimes necessary to remove channels from our lineup." The suitable alternatives that they mention are History Channel, Destination America, Nat Geo Wild and the Discovery Channel. When was the last time that anyone who loves to hunt watched an actual hunting show on one of these channels? Verizon thinks that shows about ice road truckers, Alaska State Troopers or game wardens qualify as actual "outdoor television". I realize that a lot of hunting shows don't depict "real" hunting the way that most of us do it, but I would like to have the choice to watch if I so choose. If anyone was considering switching to Verizon, I would strongly advise against it. http://www.cablefax.com/programming/verizon-drops-outdoor-channel -
I'll push her your way, lol....there's just something about it that skeeves me out.

Thanks.....Even though they say that it doesn't affect the meat, if I see the doe version of Cindy Crawford, I think that I will pass...never thought I would pass on Cindy Crawford, but in this case I will.

It looks more like a blackhead....I tried to crop it so that it is more zoomed in...hope it works.

Has anyone ever seen a growth like this on this doe's face? If so, any idea what it might be?

You could have at least dug a hole and did it on the ground

Logging Lease Land vs State Forest
adkhunter71 replied to sailinghudson25's topic in Big Woods Hunting
If you like to actually see deer, I would stick with the lease. Hunting in the Adirondacks is not for the faint of heart. To be successful, you generally need to put in a lot of miles just to find some deer and sign. And to kill one is no easy feat. I have spent many seasons in the Adirondacks that I only saw 2-3 deer in a season. If you want to kill one they normally don't stick around long to give you a great shot, so you have to be proficient with quick off hand shooting. It can be very rewarding to actually kill a deer and there is a chance that you could kill a big buck, but you need to be willing and able to put in a lot of time and effort to be successful. The increase in food and mixture of terrain in your lease situation is definitely helpful in patterning deer. As for your last question, if it pertains to hunting in the Adirondacks, I would suggest hunting on foot until you can find the freshest sign. At that point, you could try sitting if it is near a food source or a heavily used travel corridor during the rut. -
I am a frequent "lurker" on here and don't post much....but for those of you who prefer to use gloves, you can buy them bulk at U-line.com and you will have enough to last forever....or to sell on ebay, lol.... http://www.uline.com/BL_635/Shoulder-Length-Poly-Gloves http://www.uline.com/Grp_100/Latex-Gloves
