Large food plot suggestions.
chas0218 replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Once the soybean start to loose the green color they avoid them like the plague until they are very dry usually the end of gun season. The soybeans when loosing their leaves/turning are bitter and do not taste good. I wouldn't go that route if you want to draw in deer during hunting go with sweet corn/cow corn. They will flock to it. and if you want mow it down come deer season it spreads it all over for turkey and other animals closer to the ground. Brassica is a great late season plant the turnips are nice and sweet and deer love them. Personally I wouldn't clear the woods I don't think it will make a whole lot of difference if there is thick canopy overhead. The main forage for deer in the winter are twigs and tree buds. The majority of their feeding is up off the ground as most of the ground is covered in snow. In the fall deer will start to browse from the ground up so anything on the ground is fair game before the snow hits. -
Raspberries, and strawberries spread quickly and deer love them. I would recommend apple trees if possible usually take a little longer to produce fruit but apples are like crack to deer they can't resist them.
-
They would get used to it after about 2 weeks, once we kept moving them around the trees they avoided them. We found the addition of Irish springs bar soap also helped.
-
Explains why those barnes coppers fouled the crap out of my rifle a few years ago. I never knew bonded bullets didn't use 100% copper jackets.

In breeding is not evolution, I never said they were albinos and in my post to you I did not change the wording of 8N it said Middlesex from the beginning, mostly because I don't speak of things I do not know anything about. You should try it, just to clarify in breeding refers to 2 animals of same blood line having an off spring. Taking 2 different breeds and breeding them is not in-breeding. Believe what you want, but I have not saw bad things within a herd when it has come to ARs. Taste wise I invite you to come and try any of my venison. If you would be willing to meet me half way I would gladly give you some venison from a 4 1/2 year old I shot last year. There isn't much left so the sooner the better. I have shot numerous mature deer during the rut, can I ask how many deer over 130" you have taken in NY, how about 160". Like you I'm not going to go dig through all my photos to justify it. I can say without a doubt that I have never had a deer that was inedible due to its age.
-
I said 8N Middlesex but that is okay. Why must you act so condescending and insult people when they make a point you can't argue? I didn't insult you or discredit you in anyway I merely came up with facts that don't support your argument.

Is there really such thing as a brush caliber?
chas0218 replied to 10point's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Yup same thing happened to me with my 20 gauge and pine tree branch but instead hit the button buck standing behind and back of the doe. -
Crap I just bought a box of these for the .270 I hope i have better performance not that it made much of a difference in your case.

They most definitely can. Deer can't see color we know that but they can see contrasts very well. That bright orange contrasts to the dark background so much that they can pick out that bright blob that wasn't there the previous day. When we planted new trees we used put up some stakes with bright orange fabric and reflective Mylar strips to keep animals away. It worked very well. I would recommend to anyone to wear an orange vest going to and from your hunting area and wearing at least a orange hat when sitting in a stand. If I were still hunting on the ground I would wear a vest the entire time.

So what do you consider a larger bodied deer? I have been hunting 8N in Middlesex for over 10 years my father in law owns property in 8N that he has hunted since he was 20 years old now 53, and the deer have not increased in body size in the last 30 years according to him and I have noticed no difference in size in the last 10. The average mature doe in Middlesex area is about 100lbs. On my families property in 8F a 100lbs. doe would be a fawn the average mature doe is around 140lbs, been that way since my grandfather hunted the property since the 50s (as far back as he can remember). We have deer that drop twins and singles just depends on the year and the doe. We have almost 1:1 on our property and no difference in the amount of fawns each year. We run about 10 cameras all year long and keep a tally on them granted we can't ear tag them but we have our regulars. Voluntary ARs are working so your point is what? They should make them mandatory if it is working, and 70% of hunter's surveyed by Cornell wanted them? I think poor herd health is based on multiple factors biggest is the amount of forage and less so on antler size. Now when it comes to good genes it has everything to do with antler size bigger the rack the more doe you get ensuring a better gene pool for the future. Lots of people think piebald deer and those white deer at the old jail are amazing creatures but in reality they are simply in-bred genetic screw-ups that look cool. The main reason deer drop their antlers in the winter is to prevent competition for food not to get bigger (although that is a side effect of them falling off and gaining a year in maturity). In 8N there are few AG fields and the deer will primarily rely on the acorn crops. In 8F there are lots of AG fields, our property alone has 80 acres less competition for food bigger deer and herds. The health when speaking of genes is by far better when bigger deer are in the area to prevent the abnormalities and messed up genes from being continued throughout the area. When you shoot 1.5 year olds every year can you tell me what buck(s) are going to breed the doe or if he had good genes? You can't let alone anyone else because no one knows. If there is a larger more mature deer in the area that can fend off those 1.5 year olds with bad genes then he will breed that doe. So what happens to that 1.5 year old with bad genes. He is either shot by a youth or grows into a basket rack mature deer shot by someone just looking to shoot a deer. Either way the bad genes are eliminated.
-
Also depends on amount of doe in that area. I have saw on our property several bucks (2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year olds) walk side by side while scent checking doe. This year we have about 8 different mature doe and 11 bucks. Out of those 11 there were (5) 1 1/2 year olds the older bucks rarely fight over the doe they just determine the pecking order and they stick to it. This year I saw some bucks sparring but that was early on and were the 1 1/2 year olds.

You missed my point, where are those areas that do not issue DMP's? It is the ADK park and Castkill area. The reason behind it is they don't have the forage to sustain a healthy population of deer so they take a limited or no doe at all. There is nothing you can do about that unless you plan on trying to grow AG fields on the side of mountians because that is feasible. Why not put AR on all areas but the no DMP WMUs? Who said it had to be all of NY? You must not know how to cut up your deer or the person you take it to doesn't, I haven't had a tough piece of meat yet from a 5 1/2 year old deer. I have shot 2 and 1 that was 4 1/2. All those deer tasted fine with little to no gamey flavor, if you want some tips PM me and I can tell you how I process my deer. For now I'll stick to the topic at hand. I have several colleagues that hunt P.A. because of the AR and see bigger bucks them and their families lease around 300 acres in P.A. because "Too many brown it's down hunters with little to no chance at a decent mature buck." It isn't just P.A. how about antler restrictions in N.Y. I have 5 friends that hunt in the Catskills under the AR and say that there is a noticeable difference in the health of the deer and the size compared to pre AR. Unfortunately the 2 areas can not sustain a sizable herd because of the lack of natural forage. Like I mentioned above why does all of NY need AR why not only the areas that have DMPs?
-
P.A. had the same situation, they had low deer take numbers for the first 2 years then things leveled back out to the same amount of deer take numbers. This was from a P.A. game warden he said people complained the first couple years but once they saw the benefit they were a more open to the idea. People actually liked seeing more deer granted they couldn't shoot them but it gave them more hope as to whether they were going to shoot a deer. I understand that many don't want to wait 2 years until they are allowed to harvest a mature deer but in those 2 years that deer they could have shot as a 1 1/2 year old now has about 30lbs. more meat. Allowing that hunter to live off the meat for a longer duration.
-
Yeah but the youngsters get to shoot anything with or without antlers up until the age of 16 so that is a mute point. That's what the youth mentor hunt is all about getting the younger generation into the field. People complain about bad genetics if you have a 2 1/2 year old buck that is passed he will push out that younger buck with bad genetics allowing him to be shot as a basket rack 6 or 8 taking out those bad genetics.

American made rifles.. what's out there
chas0218 replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I think Remington makes a good gun I'm not bashing them just to bash them. I have several of their rifles, and 2 of their shotguns and I have had and saw some serious quality control issues that shouldn't have made it out of the factory. For example I bought an 11-87 brand new paid around $800 on sale got it cleaned up took her to the range and she wouldn't fire. Come to find out the barrel ring wasn't brazed correctly and would slid too far into the receiver not allowing the carrier to completely lock. Now here is the kicker, it was a brand new gun less than a week old and they wanted me to pay to ship it to Illion and pay ship it back to myself. They then told me it was going to take 10-12 weeks to complete the repair. It was complete bull crap that was literally the last Remington I bought. It took 9 weeks for them to order a new barrel, assemble it, test fire and send it back. When I called Remington a couple weeks after sending it in they told me because my gun was warranty work it is moved to the back of the line behind paying customers. I'm sorry I just spent $800 on a gun and expected it to at least fire right out of the box apparently I wasn't a paying customer. Another thing was that I had already taken the gun back to the dealer and we fitted another barrel from a different 11-87 and the gun had no problem hitting that snap cap. So I and the dealer knew what had to be done and when the dealer contacted Remington telling them of the situation it still had to be sent out. My father bought one of those .308 VTR rifles mind you this gun that costs over $1k and for it to have burrs in the chamber that after firing the gun the brass would not eject and had to send that back. At least his only took a couple weeks. could go on and on but from my experience Remington's quality has gone to crap. Their QC is laughable. Once they took over the Bushmaster line that seems to be their only interest. -
I shot a deer that looked similar but 34 lbs. lighter and was aged between 4 1/2 & 5 1/2. Granted it really depends on the area, but I wouldn't have pegged that deer for 8 1/2 based on the deer my area.

Down here in Steuben county it is all about filling those tags, if you pass up any deer you are chastised. My wife is a high school teacher in a small school surrounded by farms and the kids come in bragging about the deer them and their family shot filling mom's dad's brother's tags. It's ridiculous how many 1 1/2 year old bucks get killed in that area. My wife tells them the deer I pass and they all think I'm nuts then shows them the pictures of the deer. Their exact words "We don't have deer like that around here" well no crap when you shoot everything under the sun. I hunt for meat but a nice rack is an added bonus, I pass bucks in hope they make it another year. I know and don't expect every buck to live but the more I pass the better my odds for seeing a bigger one next season.

I use those thermocell feet warmers and they work well. Only problem I had was when my one set of hunting boots leaked at the seam and my feet got wet they kept warming but because my socks were saturated my feet didn't stay warm. They were chilled most of the time but not to the point that it wasn't too uncomfortable to sit for 5 hours.. Other than that I use them all winter while ice fishing and they work great.

American made rifles.. what's out there
chas0218 replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I was referring to the quality of the gun. I understand most if not all offer wooden stocks but quality of the firearms has been sub par from newer american made guns. I don't shoot Savage can't stand their triggers, Remington has gone to crap with their shotguns and rifles. Until you get into some $1k+ firearms I wouldn't buy an American made gun. That is just my personal preference from what I have dealt with over my past experience. After you start getting into those $1k + why not just buy a lightweight Sako, or Weatherby. -
Just curious where did you send it to have it aged?
-
I'm for AR and 1 buck rule, 4 on one side.
-
Are people that lazy that they can't get out of the vehicle, stand on the edge of the road and shoot? I mean legally someone in NY can get out of their car and shoot from the edge of the road as long as they are not shooting across the road it is perfectly legal.
-
You don't need to boil just a light simmer. Boiling makes a mess and the simmer does the same thing. Take it to a car wash and pressure wash it off. Then get yourself some of that peroxide paste used for bleaching hair, paint it on but do not let it get on the anlters. Let it sit overnight rinse off and bam you have your euro mount. You can get a pot to simmer the head at sam's club in the cooking section where they have the big cutting boards and stuff.

American made rifles.. what's out there
chas0218 replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
It's crazy it took them 10 years to figure out if you add another 3/8" of an inch to the rubber pad it will help with recoil. I know you said american made but there isn't much rifle wise anymore that I would buy american made. It seems the majority of american made rifles deal more with the all black guns than hunting rifles. I own a Tikka T3 hunter in .270 and it is a great shooting gun with little felt recoil. -
I don't think you can do much better other than zooming in on them. Try opening them in Paint so they are actual size then zoom in.
