  1. What I meant was......I would rather blow snow than mow grass. Sorry for the confusion
  2. I would rather blow it than mow it any day of the week
  3. Your right grampy but I decided to take the easy way out and buy them already made
  4. I really didn't have a size in mind just figured the shorter the better to cut the distance between shelves. 5" was the shortest I could find so I figure if they are to long I can cut them down and re-bend. They are stainless but only about 1/8 o.d. so they shouldn't be to bad to bend if I need to
  5. I can't help but wonder if we even have the capability anymore. A lot of the younger people today couldn't tell which end of a hammer to use. Most of them only use nail guns even if it is only to drive a couple of nails. If it wasn't for YouTube a lot of then couldn't wipe their noses. ( I would have liked to said something else)
  6. I paid $11.00 on line for twenty vs $11.00 for 6 through the supply houses. Most of the supply houses only carry 8" and these are 5". I wanted the shorter length to reduce the space between racks so I got the shortest ones I could find. For my application I probably could have used a good stiff paperclip but those are made in china also.
  7. You kept them out a couple more weeks than I could. The day after I pulled mine the snow came in along with the cold and the snow has just kept piling up. You had a pretty good season and it can be a fun way to spend part of the winter. When one continues to look ahead by making method and equipment improvements they can call themselves a trapper.. I look for easier and better ways but they don't always end up as improvements or being more productive. I always "look forward" to next year but don't always make it out. Deer season and weather always seem to get in the way. Sound like you have a new hobby
  8. This is more of a "I gotta vent" but it really bothers me. As a rule I try to buy American whenever I can and have been somewhat acceptive of buying things "made in china", but cringe every time I see it on the label. Today I received some meat hooks I ordered for my smoker and sure enough "made in china". You would think that a simple design like this could easily be manufactured in the US and wouldn't require expensive programming, high skilled labor, and or expensive tooling to fabricate. Something is wrong with the whole thought process when we are forced to buy foreign stuff over things that could be made here. I know they quote labor costs, overhead, material cost, etc. as part of the reason but tell me a simple design like this could not be made right here. I think China has us more over a barrel than most of realize. I hope this doesn't end up in the political section even though it more than likely will.
  9. DEC Accepting Applications for Annual Pheasant Release Program Applications are now available for DEC's cooperative Day-Old Pheasant Chick Program, which allows people to participate in raising and releasing pheasants to enhance fall hunting opportunities. Day-old chicks are available at no cost from the Reynolds Game Farm. Approved applicants will receive the chicks in April, May, or June. No chicks obtained through the Day-Old Pheasant Chick Program can be released on private shooting preserves and all release sites must be approved in advance by DEC and be open for public pheasant hunting opportunities. Applicants are required to provide shelter and daily care to the rapidly growing chicks, monitor the birds' health, and ensure the chicks have adequate feed and water. Individuals interested in the program should contact the nearest DEC regional office for applications and additional information. Applications must be filed with a DEC regional wildlife manager by March 25. A "Pheasant Rearing Guide" and applications are available on DEC's website. For questions about the program or eligibility, email [email protected] or call 607-273-2768.

  12. When one assumes, they are Intellectually superior they get bored and do things like joining a hunting forum hoping to prove to others they are the superior beings and above the rest by bragging about who they swap spit with and how much more intelligent they are than the rest of the herd. Instead of contributing anything they spend their time trying to make others feel inferior and take cheap shots at ones that don't look at things their way or think like them. Their opinion is suppose to be yours and if it isn't you are stupid or worse. Pretty sad way to spend your time, This about sums it up: "The trap in having a superior IQ is you may know you are smarter than others, but you might not be smart enough to realize that you are still mostly stupid."

  14. Cuomo unleashed his upcoming budget proposal asking for 15 Billion in federal aid. If he doesn't get the 15 billion he has promised to increase taxes and cut state aid to schools meaning we can all expect our school taxes to skyrocket along with other taxes: In an unusual move, Cuomo presented two executive budget proposals instead of one. In the first, taxes would be hiked, education cut by billions of dollars, proposed projects delayed and the state would need to borrow heavily, leaving future generations to foot the bill. https://www.timesunion.com/news/article/new-york-2021-state-budget-cuomo-15881507.php
  15. I might get out right behind the house just to be out there. God bless you for still doing it the hard way. If I couldn't use the four-wheeler I would probably have to give it up. All the crap I use in a basket would weigh more than me Earth anchors are definitely on the list along with a "cookie cutter" https://www.minntrapprod.com/Volkers-Cookie-Cutter-Trap-Bed-Cutter-Select-Your-Size/productinfo/CUTTERS/. I like experimenting with different things and methods to see what works consistently. This year I went 50% lure and 50% bait. The lure(s) seemed to work better than the bait. The sad part is I put a trail cam on one of my lure sets and have pictures of deer with their noses right on the set and where it was located they had to go out of their way to check it out. May have to use some deer hunting. I have always thought about the waxed dirt but never used it because I am to lazy to make it myself and to cheap to buy it. Maybe next year. Just nice to be doing something outside trying to outwit the the creatures of nature. I don't call myself a trapper but like to trap when the time is right. Truthfully I would rather be calling but with fur prices they way they are I haven't been doing much of that. As long as I am outside and not scratching bug bites or mowing grass I am a happy camper.
  16. Done...To bad it doesn't include "and the right to keep and bear arms"
  17. Conibears/Body grip traps are not really an option for canines. I don't do any water trapping but I do have a couple laying around to use for woodchucks, nuisance squirrels, etc.
  18. Not really a line but I figured with this year's fur prices in the toilet I would run some traps and do some experimenting. Unfortunately, I got a later start than I wanted because of deer season. I started out on December 4th with four sets on my property until we got some stable weather to expand to the neighboring property of 55 acres. I definitely picked the wrong time to trap. The weather immediately turned to crap and soon my trap beds and bait holes were filled with water. Then we got snow and they all froze over with a crust on top. I kept maintaining them on a daily basis to keep them working in hopes of catching a coyote or two. Tough to catch a coyote with a possum in the trap, a deer stepping on it setting it off, or if the trap is frozen over but I kept trying because of the sign I was seeing. It is disheartening to pull up to a set and see tracks all over it only to find a icy crust on top. I did manage to catch a nice young red fox which I turned loose. Caught a coyote to but it jacked two 18" rebar stakes out of the wet soft ground when it warmed up and took off with the trap, stakes and all. I looked all over for it but couldn't find it hung up anywhere. Finally the weatherman calls for a "dry" week with no precipitation so I expand out to the neighboring 55 acres and get six more sets out in addition to moving and remaking the four on my property. The next day it rains and freezes at night, then we get some snow. Luckily the temperatures didn't fluctuate enough to affect the traps but the ground is still frozen making it difficult to dig a decent trap bed. Temperatures warmed up enough just to make everything a muddy mess. With the clay soil we have it sticks to boots, 4-wheeler tires and everything else. With more rain and snow on the way along with dropping temperatures, mating season, and fur quality headed for the down side it is time to pull them. Caught a couple possums, a rabbit, had two pull outs, and had a flipped trap (probably a grey fox). Got a chance to try the "compass set", and the "pipe dream" set but didn't find they made a significant difference. I actually had more responses using my old methods but may use them in the future to change things up once in a while. I have never had a pull-out with double stakes until this year so I may look into earth anchors for next year. I really like the MB-550's and having doubts about my 1 ¾ & # 2's holding a coyote but have had success with them in the past. Despite the weather and fighting the freeze-ups and mud I had a good time and spent some time outdoors. Depending on conditions I may re-set a couple close to home so I can check them from the house. But for now I am taking a break. Congratulations to Culver Creek and Water Rat on your catches and if you are still out there I hope you continue with your success. The less coyotes the better!!!
  19. I had it sent to me and I don't do facebook so couldn't tell you if is real or not. With the way the world is today it would not surprise me a bit.
