  1. This gun I'm sure has many prized memories, but older 410s are even worse. Felt recoil is determined by many things, one of em drop of comb. Older guns of most styles drop too much which leads to all kinds of negative things. Id not get rid of it though. Cool gun, great shape it seems too
  2. 20 ga is very good n I'm by no means knocking it. Great gauge for most. It's too big imo for real small kids. The 410 is a good gun to get first shots off w, a 22 is too but I'm referring to shotguns. Wingshooting is better imo w the 28. Shells are over priced but so is college and weddings in most cases. The 28 by my isn't hard to find but honestly I reload. you guys can start kids anyway you like, you're the parents but the 28 is the perfect gun, again imo, do what you like it's only food for thought guys
  3. Most guys start kids on 410s. I think it's a bad choice. 28 is far superior n doesn't kick much harder. Also doesn't rat hole game like a tightly choked 410 Imo What are you all using
  4. I've taken lots of folks duck hunting, n they typically show up over choked n miss. One year I shot 147 ducks, I know cause I was doing waterfowl survey counts for the state. I had to log every bird. My buddy was doing wing studies, he killed a ton too. It was a perfect storm of cold up north n warm below us. Regardless most birds were shot less than 20 yards using Kent steel n improved cylinder chokes. Steel will move most chokes up one size. What you all using n how long have you been at it? What type waterfowling do you do? We deke em all n don't shoot if they don't. Maybe it's the reason for close shots. Even hunting divers it's the same thing. 7-9 dozen dekes off a point on a reservoir. This is more to help newbies not shoot an overly choked gun. We use typically 4 sometimes the ic in 20 ga if we're doing a quick in n out than pheasant or other upland. While we're on it, for upland we use ic or more open, often w spreader loads. Makes it pretty open but this is over a pointing dog. How bout bunnies? Anything besides ducks, geese, turks I'm using a 28 ga. Again open chokes. Pattern the guns, I think most overdue it. Something to think about when you screw in a full or mod choke. Idk where mine even are.
  5. Doewacker that makes sense. I shoulda thought of that. Def a good reason n Growalot all dogs are different, some softer some harder than others n even among breeds there's crazy obvious differences in bloodlines. If you own enough, especially hot ones, you'll eventually on some need to break em. Some guys don't care, for me each dog has its game, my buddy was just recently at a night hunt n the "coon" dog he ran with spent an hour chasing bunnies, beagles if they chase deer can be hunted almost nowhere n it can be dangerous crossing roads, same for bird dogs, pretty embarassing taking some other hunter out n turning your prize dog loose n watching it run behind a white flag. All avoidable often by running them w the right dogs or solo, some dogs though are straight up meatheads. I normally would never keep them. Had a dog one time name Snuff, she was FC bred n ran good. One day on a hill at my club she was down below running deer. She wore a collar just in case as she was only 8-9 months old. I shocked her n she came back. a month or so passed, I ran her in the state derby championships. She made winners pack, then the dogs hit a check, one little hound ran up too far for my liking n started tongueing. Off they went, Snuff started to pack n bounced out. The judges were ordering her up as someone yelled deer. They didn't get her n by the end of trail they were using her as the dog to look at if half the hounds were barking. They knew she was honest. She only got a third but she ran well n if we were hunting Id have brought her home not been looking 2 towns over tomo for her. Sometimes it's a blessing
  6. Most of post was about bird dogs, some things transfer over not a ton of commands
  7. The reason for the non command is you want absolute the non chasing trash. They should associate the shock w the game doing it not you. Try it sometime, shock em off a deer that way n next time they smell one they just ain't going. Hounds tend to chase more than bird dogs n once gone the chase is on. Bird dogs come back after a short stint commonly. Ive never had a bird dog chase. Another thing to consider using voice commands, wondering how many guys train "stay"? Or sit? Crazy imo. Imagine a bird dog sitting in the field or downing a hound enough that they think its ok n just take a break n lie down alone. Ugh a puke in my book. No offense to anyone's dog but this is how strongly I feel about this. What purposes do those words serve gun dogs? Its useless, if a command is given say heel, or whatever they are trained to never come out of command until realesed. Following commands til release leads right into whoa. Another command never broken until you let em. This is why TV curs irk me. Theyre half trained. Make your life easy too. They need to know kennel, here, whoa, fetch and drop. Fetch n drop can be deleted as dogs are trained to be dogs n know their job. oh another pet peeve, dogs w no manners. They oughta stand as you collar them, mind you perhaps w bulging eyes n shaking legs but they better not move til they're released from whoa. Did commands for hounds, tally here, tally ho, for beagles, etc etc. ecollars are great but remember something, it's not a torture device, it's a training/reinforcement tool. A great one at that but the dog needs to already know n understand command. Do not use before except to break from off game
  8. We've used ecollars a long time for breaking dogs. Mny method is to let em chase just a bit, say nothing n hit em. They'll think the deer or whatever did it. Never say a word in conjunction as you'll start hitting the collar n yelling no. One day the batteries will be dead, it won't be on etc. They'll chase perhaps n not get shocked. They shouldn't associate the stimulation w you. Just my opinion n I've had prob 100 personal dogs plus trained others
  9. Bro you're too dumb to do stuff legally, that's evident from your posts. You certainly are poaching n bragging about being able to shoot some extra makes you a real man. Fronting ain't cutting it. Lots of guys on here can do the same passing deer n they don't say so in a bragging way. Like i said I'll just remember where the bloodlines run
  10. It's a dirt ball move to be a poacher. You're father should be ashamed too but I guess that's how he raised you. Taking deer illegally is poaching n you can slice it anyway you see it in your screwed up mind
  11. Deer have cones Steve. Cones are color receptors. You may just wanna know that. We all are wrong sometimes. Consideration for all in having a season is important. Your seemingly selfish. You wanna do what you wanna do n screw anyone else. Conservation? Hmmm I agree w that but not in your sense. Bow season was not set up as a numbers game. It was set up for hunters who wanted the challenge. You're arguements are weak n make sense only to you but that's who it seems you're only concerned with. If you wanna hunt earlier pick up a bow n stop crying you can't hunt whenever you want
  12. You do understand bow season wasn't set up as a primary way to big a big part of the harvest? It was set up as a time for guys looking to challenge themselves. This all has changed obviously. My state has now had over 50% harvest during the bow seasons. Mixing all the seasons together though is nuts. Trying to bowhunt would be only shooting them as they ran from a gun hunter as opposed to hunting them under natural conditions. Seems you prob just gun hunt?
  13. During testing before our state went full inclusion almost every company got together w hunter ed instructors and stated that was recommended n in their literature. Maybe it's changed? Idk guys but I may stand corrected
  14. It's done in my town. Mostly cattle some corn. It. Benefits turkey n bears
  15. So you're suggesting one big general season? Doesn't it sound like everyone would just use a rifle than?
  16. Read your literature. Unless anything has changed it is only a couple hundred between shots per most manufacturers instructions. Granted they may be conservative but What type crossbow do you have n what does literature say?
  17. Buck master I wasn't inferring you weren't being honest just saying that's the norm for most manufacturers. 2 years I guess depends on how much you shoot. If it says 2 years Id guess your good. Who makes that one?
  18. Buck master do you count shots? How did you get that number? Not doubting you but it may be less if only weeks old. Now most manufacturers instructions say to replace strings every 200 shots or so. Doesn't matter if you shot the 500 but if you did it certainly could be recommended for change already from the manufacturer
  19. Look for a used bow til things ease up. The shelf will be higher if you're gonna shoot off that but Id bet you could find one cheap or even have some given to you. Either way best of luck
  20. You should start shooting now than in order to be honestly profecient
  21. Thank you for the offer but I can no longer find those tapered shafts n went to the beman n screw on broadheads.
