Over cooking liver tends to dry them up and toughen them up. We usually cook the liver medium rare to medium. Of course that with pig and calf liver. Not sure the same goes with deer liver.

I wonder how pushing the envelope like this would effect hunting regulations. Some hunting is allowed with rimfires only due to the limitations of a rimfire. But once a rimfire approaches the capabilities of a centerfire, will they ban rimfire hunting in those situations entirely? Maybe, maybe not. We shall see.

I can never understand how anyone can be so damn proud of doing something like that. I mean - "Yeah! I think you got him, Let's go track him!"? I freakin' hope you got him. If it takes you that many shots to drop a deer then you suck big time!

Judging from your description of your property, are you 500' from his dwelling? Be careful because if your stand is, he can pull out that card if he wants as well. I don't think DEC would help much because at this point, it's a police issue.

I'm paying for the wedding...but they're still my parents. I'm not forced but it's hard for me to say no.

My parents tried cooking the deer liver as if it was pig or calf liver. Didn't turn out so good. They tossed it even before I got a chance to try it. I cooked up the heart. I always like to at least once, try a meat with minimal seasoning to really taste the meat and not have it masked with tons of spice or sauce. I took a basic recipe from a book. Just a dash of salt and pepper, dredge in flour, then pan fried for 5 minutes on each side. Let the oil drip. It was pretty good. Not prime rib or filet mignon good but pretty good. Got a passable rating from all who tried it. No one disliked it. It had a tiny hint of calf liver taste to it which isn't a bad thing because I actually like liver which is why I was disappointed the actual liver came out bad and was tossed.

NYC squirrels got attitude!

We also differ in a lot of political views and other stuff as well. (see his cop rants) But when I'm out in the woods, I'm only focused on the hunt and as long as the other person on my team has the same focus and isn't messing up my hunting experience, then I'm cool.

Phade, if you check the other threads, you'll see it there. Shawn's more about precision and I'm more the bring enough gun and go for the big boiler room type.

Sorry, correction. The 1st S is for Sports...not doing the #2. The 4 S's I'm talking about is the only excusable times significant jewelry can be removed.

It's 4 S. $hit, Sleep, Shower, Sex.

Back at the office today. Telling all my work buddies that know I hunt my story. Getting so many request for venison, I might have to take another before the season ends. It's like they know I'm in such a good mood right now, that I'm so generous.

My dog mounts other dogs and humps them. Except she's a girl. Other dog owners ask me if I'm sure she's a girl. It's embarassing.

Disappointed with that movie. Completely different from the book which is sad because the book is a classic and the book's story is so much better.

Trigger Pull weight question?
Elmo replied to HuntOrBeHunted's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
My guns all have different tigger pull weights. I go as light as 1.5 lbs and as heavy at 5 lbs. Personally, I prefer the 2 to 2.5 lbs trigger pull weight. I want to feel some tension go off especially if I'm wearing gloves when it's cold out. Since you should keep you finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot, I don't a trigger that is so light, the gun goes off just by my glove fabric gracing the trigger. With that said, I also going to blame myself because I won't adjust myself, will go to a gunsmith, but been procrastinating and never did so instead, I just know by heart how each rifle shoots at what distance and stick to my limitations. This spring, my guns will go to the gunsmith for some trigger adjustments. No more procrastinating. -
I just reported my deer this afternoon using the phone. I didn't like that there wasn't a confirmation so I'm not even sure if it went through correctly. Hopefully it did.

Here's weird one. There's no law against killing a pigeon but it is illegal to intentionally injure a pigeon. The discharge of any firearm or bow is illegal and trapping is illegal. The only legal way I can think of to take a pigeon is to hit it with a bat killing it instantly, or jumping on top of one and snapping it's neck quickly.

Well you know, I am giddy like a kid right now.

Best story I forgot to mention. I had bought along on of those giant heavy duty garbage bags to stuff the deer into but it barely covered half her body. So I called my uncle, told him I about the deer and asked if he can drive up with more garbage bags. He said it'll take him hours to get there from where he's at and suggested I go to the nearest house and ask them for bags. I'm thinking...here I am covered in blood, knocking on someone's door in the middle of the night, asking for garbage bags so I can stuff a body into it. Visualizing that each time makes me laugh.

First, I want to thank everyone for their congratulatory remarks. I truly feel lucky to have so much support from this forum family. Second, I want to say that I met Shawn through this forum on a squirrel hunt get-together. While I don't agree with some of his tactics and he doesn't agree with some of my tactics, we agreed to a set of guidelines that we would both follow when we do hunt together. The result was my first deer. So rather than focus on each others differences, and focus instead on similarities, there would be less bickering (and more deer) in our hunting community. PS: We also save a ton of gas by carpooling.

I wonder if you pour the corn juice from a can of corn on it to give it a smell...would it be considered baiting?

Congrats!

Aaron, don't know what your budget is but I got my entire CVA Wolf setup for a little over $300. $212 for rifle plus mount and tax. Spend $40 on scope. And about $50 for powder, primers, and bullets. Got 1 and half inch groups at 100 yards on one range session. Dropped my first deer on it's first day out. The stock definitely does feel cheap and the ramrod is already all scratched up just from one range session but if you're on a budget and just need something to get the job done, it is an option.

They were imported from the Amazon and are now destroying farm land. I heard about them when I worked at the Bronx Zoo a long time ago. Met some other herpatologist from FL and they were telling us that's what they fed their gators since they had so many of them. We feed ours up here lab mice and chickens. Just pour a bucket of freshly euthanized mice into a pit with a couple of gators and let snack on them like popcorn. This book is interesting if interested in invasive species. So many invasive species here in NY that I didn't even realize they were invasives to begin with. http://www.amazon.com/Eating-Aliens-Adventures-Hunting-Invasive/dp/161212027X
