  1. A bunch...but a lot of them are taking a break to hunt big game season.
  2. 13BVET - My season so far has been an interruption after another. I still haven't even fired the muzzleloader I bought a month ago. Now I'm going to be labelled as those city folks who do all their prep the day before heading into the woods.
  3. No, papabear. When i said 3 feet, I was saying I was impressed that it was only 3 feet from you.
  4. Congrats deerthug but there still seems to be some room in tat freezer for one more.
  5. First season and you get a jake and a doe. Some people have all the luck! Just kidding! Welcome aboard!

Hmmm...didn't think about that. I must check.
  7. Man, Shawn...way to bust someones bubble. What crazy nonsense are you going to say next? That Santa Clause doesn't exist?
  8. Poor me? I'm about to eat some good Big Bird turkey drumstick. I'm good!

Thanks jennifer. The odor is definitely one obstacle to be considered. My dad owns a townhouse and he rents out the bottom floor and they might complain but your idea sounds great. If diligent cleaning and kitty litter will eliminate that then it's this may work. Spoke to my dad about it and he likes the idea but if he goes ahead with it, it's probably best to buy the chicks during the spring I'm guessing.
  10. Here's my take: The majority (not all) city hunters are hunters who did not group up with hunting in their tradition so are fairly new to the sport of not just hunting but shooting as well compared to the rural hunters. This also makes them nervous hunters...good and bad. Some will shoot out of jitters...others freeze and don't shoot at all. But a good number of them are still in awe with nature, grew up surrounded by animal loving liberals, and have an extreme fear and respect for guns. I think a very few city hunters go hutning acting like it's some sort of game, act arrogant and careless, throw trash every where, drink beer, and blow up random animals just for the heck of it. The main reason the city hunters get a bad rap is the shear number of them. Purely hypothetically speaking. If 20% of the 10 rural hunters are bad, you have 2 bad rural hunters. If 10% of the 100 city hunters are bad, you have 10 bad city hunters.
  11. Me personally, I like hunting for the experience 1st and the kill 2nd so during times when it's overly crowded and I have to compete against other hunters, I rather hunt a different spot or not at all. It sucks because you pay for that spot.
  12. To compensate for having eyes separated on both sides of their head, birds bob their head back and forth to obtain depth perception.
  13. Don't you guys completely unload your gun during the lifting and lowering process? Nevermind, just re-read Fast Eddie's response.
  14. Went throught the harvest thread and checking out everyone's harvest. Followed the rules and ended up getting this. So if I didn't "like" your post don't think I think any less of your accomplishments.

So the hens will lay eggs without a rooster but since the eggs aren't fertilized, they won't hatch? Never knew. Learn something new each day. I guess my dad has enough to raise a few hens. He's talked about wanting to do so before but lets see if he's willing to re-arrange his vegetable garden to fit a coop and if the neighbors won't through a fit from the noise and smell.
  16. I'm guessing if you double load completely, then it would be powder - bullet - powder - bullet. The primer will set off the first powder load but since the bullet seperates the second powder load, the second powder load won't ignite so it won't have a pipe bomb effect but I would imagine it would be the same as shooting a rifle right after a squib fire.

Thanks Paula. By noise I mean the infamous cockadoodoodo that goes on during sunrise. So if I buy a batch of 6 hens who have never been introduced to a rooster in their lives, they'll still lay eggs even without doing the dirty deed? My dad has a townhouse in the city so the yard is tiny. I'm guessing 15 feet by 10 feet (rough guess) which he currently uses as a vegetable garden.

Some completely novice questions from a city slicker. Wondering if it's possible to raise chickens in an urban setting. 1. Are there any breeds that don't make any noise? Mainly interested in egg production but if neighbors complain, it'll put an immediate end to this idea. 2. Read some where that you don't need a rooster to produce eggs? Is this true? Did I doze off when they were explaining about the "birds and the bees"? 3. Do the chickens need to be bought indoors during the winter or do they stay outdoors in their roost? Thanks in advance.
  19. I meant that if you play the wind correctly (you're downwind of the deer), you can get within 20-30 yards of the deer...even if you stink some kind of awful. If the wind is not to your favor, they'll sniff you out well pass 100 yards. My dog knows when I'm home before I even get to the front door of my building. This is through brick walls, sheet rock, and every sort of odor the other apartments produce. My girlfriend tells me that once the dog starts scratching at the door and she'll know that 5 minutes later, I'll walk through the door.
  20. I use to get into that scent stuff also but I'll be honest with you, there are times I forget to wash my stinky clothes, forget to spray myself with scent killer, and have deer walk up to me. My guess/theory is the wind brings the deer within 30-20 yards of you. Scent killer/blocker brings then in another 5-10 yards.
