    head shots

Comparing cops and hunters is dumb because they do not relate at all. #1. Cops are taught to shoot center mass because it is the largest target and helps avoid over penetration. #2. Cops are not trying to "kill" the target in a human fashion. They're goal is to neutralize the threat like KEVA mentioned. #3. The deer doesn't shoot back at the cop. If passes up on the shot because he/she feels they don't have the right shot, there is a possibility they can die. #4. Police snipers in a hostage situation are taught to shoot straight on at the nose. The nose is made of cartlidge and not hard bone so it won't deflect bullets as easily. Also, the bullet will then travel to the back of the head and destroy the base of the brain where it connects to the spine and where the medulla oblongata is located. Destroying either of those two drops you on the spot. You can live with portion of your brain destroyed. Most recent example, Gabrielle Giffords. Another example is the lobotomy clinics where people use to be able to walk into, have a doctor scrape away the front of your brain with an ice pick, and walk back to work all under 15 minutes. Finally, I'm going to follow the rabbit trail to the hole. You can train all you want for any situation. You can "simulate" any situation as many times as you want. None of them will EVER come close to the real thing because you know in the back of your mind, if you fail, you'll just try the simulation again. Not in the real world. In the real world, you're shittin' in your pants. If I put you in a dark warehouse, give you a pistol, and tell you that there are a couple of guys hiding in there that are out to kill you...you're going to tell me going to hit bulls eye on a split second decision? No. What I imagine is the moment you hear any noise behind you, you're going to jump and start shooting in the direction of the noise. Point is cops are human and they have fears. If a cop has his gun drawn on you, my advice is don't make an rapid movements, and definitely don't jump out of the shadows and yell "boo"!
  2. My very first tattoo is your typical unoriginal dragon on the arm tattoo. I got it when I was really young and couldn't afford much so the tattoo is a bit small for my taste. Seeing that having it removed will actually cost more (physically and monetarily) than having something bigger drawn over it. I'm going to eventually get it covered over but I need to focus on other priorities first.
  3. Check out RT Gun and Smoke in Mount Vernon. I haven't been there in a very long time but I remember they had a lot of used police surplus Mossberg 500s. The guy who runs the shop is an ex cop so he gets the connections or something. They were selling for real cheap but I don't remember the actual cost. It was like 2 years ago.
  4. My 12 gauge is a Mossberg 500 which I moded up. It was originally a combo (28 inch field barrel and 18.5 inch defense barrel). As I did more research and realized the extra length only granted an insignificant increase in accuracy, I went out and bought a 20 inch field barrel. The extra length is only suppose to help provide better weight balancing when swinging through on the follow through. So much easier carrying a 20 inch barrel through the brush than a 28 inch. The 28 inch barrel now sits in the closet and will probably never see the day light again.
  5. If you don't like the kick of the 30-06, why do you feel you need to get one? Why not a smaller caliber that doesn't kick as much. Yes, a different rifle may reduce the kick a little but just a little. Not a whole lot.
  6. Only been hunting 2 and 1/2 years. Been checked twice. Both when I had just pulled into the parking lot of Stewart. They were cool. One of them admired my tacti-cool Mossberg 500 so we started talking guns for awhile.
  7. Nice setup, great buck!
  8. Link takes you to a login page. Can't read article. Anyway...dumb. It's a bolt action. Just remove the bolt and clear from the back.
  9. It's been a hectic last couple of weeks for me so I decided to take a personal day today to finish some errands to run up to the shooting range later in the afternoon. 1st I confirmed zero on my 12 gauge, then I tried the muzzleloader. 2 pellets (100 grains) with 250 grain TC shockwave bullets. Ohhh...that things was smooth. Maybe it was because I had just taken a pounding by putting 11 rounds of solid slugs down the range but the CVA Wolf hardly kicked at all. I must find a better way of handling the primer. Those things are tiny and I keep my nails short. As I was trying to get one out of the box, my elbow knocks the rifle off the table. It fell on the scope, breaking it. $100 down the drain. I would have been a lot more upset if it was one of my more expensive scope. I ended up going over to Gander and buying a cheap Simmons scope for the time being. But essentially I wasted the trip to the range. Never got a chance to shoot a second shot. Will have to come back to the range another day to sight in the new scope. Pros: MZ with the load I was using is gentle on my shoulder. After having to pound shotgun slugs, I kick of a MZ on 100 grains of powder is a love tap. I don't see myself going back to the slug gun ever again. Cons: So many moving parts. I found myself fumbling the whole time. I guess part of that is because I'm new to MZ and still trying to figure it out. Cleaning it is a pain in the @$$!
  10. Apparently this went from a game warden to cops in general. It's no secret there is a quota system for NYC cops and there are some (not all - some) cops who are lazy so they hand out bogus tickets just to meet the quota. I've been ticketed twice wrongfully. One was a maybe, the other was an obvious wrongful ticket and a jerk of a cop. Driving through the upper west side of manhattan, there was a squad car doubled parked on a one lane street. I slowly squeeze through him and then I saw the light turn yellow so I speed up to make it. Minutes later, that squad car pulls me over. Apparently he was following me for awhile waiting for me to do something wrong. They had me get out of the car and start yelling an me like a drill sergeant. I played it cool...did the whole "yes, sir...no, sir...I'm sorry, sir". Cop to my left points to the squad car and tells me to go wait over there while he checks on the passengers. The moment I took a step, the cop to my right accuses me of trying to run. Did the whole breath analyzer, etc. Came out clean, I wasn't drinking at all. In the end, I get a ticket for reckless driving. I consulted a friend of mine who is a NYC cop and he told me it's a bogus ticket. In NYC, you cannot get a reckless driving by itself. It's accompanied by a primary ticket such as running a red light, speeding, turning without signaling, etc. How can you be considered "reckless" if you followed every single traffic law to a t? So I took a day off. Went down to court at my "appointed" time. Waited FOUR hours! Tons of other "law breakers" went ahead of me. When I finally went up to the judge, he read the ticket and said okay, I can pay $25 and they'll drop it. I asked what if I don't want to pay and would rather fight it? He said then we'll arrange another court date for you to fight it. Now, that means I have to take another day off. Come all the way back down here again, wait hours again...just to avoid $25? I decided to just pay the $25 eventhough I knew full well that I was innocent. I just wanted to get out of there so bad I rather let the city rob me of $25 because I lose a lot more than that taking a day off. All those people who went before me...every single one of them paid their $25. I wondered how many of them also got robbed by the city? PS: Even after that, I hold no grudge. I have a few friends who are NYPD and I can say for sure, they're outstanding officers so there are some good ones out there...unfortunately, there are also some bad ones too.
  11. I would talk to them first. Eliminate all possibility (regardless of how remote that may be) that it could have been a misunderstanding and express how serious you are. If they do it again the second time then you'll see a "WTS" posting here for a tree stand.
  12. All my run in with the DEC have been pleasant. Mostly they were just checking to see if I have the proper licenses. One ticket I got was well deserved and they actually gave me the minimum.
  13. Very cool. Thanks for posting.
  14. Isn't part of hunting about adapting and/or conquering the conditions? Might have to change your style of hunting. Part of what I enjoy about hunting is being alone in the woods. I even get annoyed if I bump into a hiker let alone another hunter. It is why I avoid opening weekend of gun season. I haven't been able to get out much at all the past month due to all kinds of personal crap coming out of no where but I did get an afternoon in during opening gun season and went to a bow only area. Had the woods all to myself. Saw two doe. Out of bow range of course but it was still a great afternoon away from all the stress.
  15. Surveyor - Hope your conversation resolved the issue but I would have called the cops on him because you had already given him the warning the previous year when you saw him scouting your brush. As far as public roads go, I believe you don't have to be 500 feet from them but you can't shoot over one.
  16. This is one of those cases where those who try to bend the law (like Guns&ReligionCop said with guys using kids as an excuse to fish without a license) forcing the system to put in place laws that result in a harassment for those who follow the law. It sucks but it is what it is and knowing full well that the law is in place, you should have your license. Seriously, it's only $29 for the year and I know $29 can be tough to come by for some people in this economy but it's also not too much to prevent people from getting a license. People argue that it's preventing from sportsman from preserving the sport but the $29 is just as important in preserving the sport. I understand that in this particular case, it is out of state residence fee which is a lot higher. I'm not saying crappyice was intentionally trying to get away with fishing without a license at all. When the law was put in place, it sure did inconvienced a lot of law abiding fishermen/women, but if it wasn't in place, the poachers would run rampant and in the end, we wouldn't be complaining about inconviences because we wouldn't have fishing at all.
  17. The main reason why there's a ban on airguns in NYC was because too many teens were holding up stores as well as mistakenly shot by cops because they bad bought air pistols that look realistic when being flashed around at night.
  18. bkln, do you coon hunt with a dog or do you try to call them in? How's the success?
