They also used night vision. Their actions were deliberately intended to break the hunting laws and should be punished severely. Large fines and loss of firearms & equipment used in the commission of the crime plus a lifetime ban from hunting.

Fat Tire at the restaurant tonight. In hindsight, a good red wine would have paired better with my filet. FT is a little flat for a bold steak and peppercorn sauce. BUT, I did pick up another bottle of Founders CBS, Goose Island Bourbon County and case of Brooklyn Limited Chocolate Stout!

Baiting, nightvision and no tags? Make an example of them and give them the max penalty.

I also watch MW and HP. Good shows. They talk about their hunts and the thought processes behind them in a calm, methodical way, taking the good with the bad. I'd hunt with them. By contrast, the D&DH guy is just whiny and condescending AF, can't stand him. Then there are the slew of youtubers who devolve into a shivering, over-dramatic, girly shrieking mess when they shoot something. Personally, I am someone that is thankful for the harvest, appreciative of what that animal will provide and I'm not about to dance and act like fool over killing a deer just because it has a big rack.

NF NSX is probably overkill for "fun" and I'm not sure how far you'll normally be shooting at. That said, this is the scope I hunt with and it's deadly. Crisp glass, illuminated reticle, zero stop and balances well on the gun. If I was regularly shooting at 300+ yards, then I'd step up to a higher magnification (and thus more weight). YMMV http://www.nightforceoptics.com/nxs/2-5-10x32

Total mind %@#& to stay in the stand all weekend with frozen feet. Temps were too frosty. Nothing worked, not even 1 toe warmer and 2 hand warmers on the inner sock. Safe bet that I'll be checking out these Baffins and other boots recommended here.

I think that's a wrap for me. Feeling the (freezer) burn after that all-day ice box sit. Fisher and red tail hawk spotted, but no deer. Still, it's been a great season for me and big step forward. Very grateful.
-
Saturday: 6 deer finally showed just before sundown, but nothing clear and in range for the xbow. Gives me some extra motivation to brave the single digit temps in the morning.
-
Wait, you didn't pound that plate of Christmas cookies with the CBS already?
-
All afternoon I've been looking forward to enjoying a good barrel-aged brew to celebrate closing a large case at work today. So naturally, I no sooner finish walking up from the basement with my prize then the power goes out! Can't cook now so Ommegang Three Philosophers for dinner!!

Cool can, but definitely not a cellar beer!

Busch makes camo cans for hunting season. 'Merica! Dilly, Dilly
-
Prayers for your Mom, TF. You can always find more deer.
-
Haven't tried one. Any good?
-
No joy this am. Scouted for tracks and found the best sign about 50 yds from my current stand. Also pulled 2 cards to find that the deer have gone decidedly nocturnal. Guessing that I need to change trees and hope one makes a mistake

Every sane bone in my body said to sleep in and stay in my nice warm bed this morning. The other 205 bones said get up and go hunt with the xbow!

Might be the only time I've heard of a guy getting a hernia fixed up just so the wife could tear him a new one! Just trying to cheer you up reel. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Good catch.

It's a shame he felt the need to lie about his hunt.

The other big upside for me is the cost of cr123's vs simply recharging batteries. Plus I can use the red light headlamp to get in/out of woods during deer season instead of toting around the Wicked Light as I've been doing. Although, if you ever had to go hand-to-hand with a yote, that WL would crack some skulls open!
-
Very happy with my Wicked Lights rig. I'm using a handheld flashlight with red cover for scanning, but want to get a red headlamp instead. Hands-free plus rechargeable batteries.

what would the old hunter in you tell the young hunter you were
Jdubs replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Hunting
Well, my "younger self" only started hunting 2 years ago, but I am really enjoying all of your replies. Thank you for candidly sharing. The comments about buying land especially have made an impression. Having made a mountain of mistakes so far, the biggest difference between filling tags or not this year has come down to one simple thing: Always be ready to shoot. -
We once had a guy riding in a cab outside of Albany on I-90 that had a bag of guns with him. A state trooper pulled the cab over and the gang banger passenger opened fire on him with an AK then started shooting at the oncoming traffic. Everyone jammed on the brakes, parked and ran; it's a miracle no one was hit. SWAT team arrived after 20 or 30 minutes and finally put the guy down. Moral to the story is no matter how vivid one's imagination may be, you just never know what can happen. The en vogue thing now seems to be "protestors" blocking a roadway and threatening people. I would guess you could solve most problems with your ccw, but who knows if/when a long gun would ever come in handy. https://www.google.com/amp/www.timesunion.com/local/amp/Shooter-thought-he-d-killed-trooper-555928.php

In the woods at closer range, sure. Across open fields, you'd probably want something more.
