LIVE From The Woods 2021 Stories And Pictures Let's Have Em!

Doe and a fawn in my plot here at the house. Feeding in the pouring rain. First deer I have laid on here in almost a month. My father-in-law will probably hunt here some while I am gone to the family farm. He has a shooting house on a farm nearby, but they buried all the fields in manure yesterday. Usually they don't spread the grass, but I guess they are going to be plowed under for corn next year. -
Have a good one!!! I love having a birthday during deer season!!!

Good luck this week Rob! Congrats to Paul and Fletch's brother. Some bucks hitting the ground!!! I will head over to the farm this afternoon for my last crossbow hunt before VT rifle season starts. Put up a few posted signs, check cameras, move a stand etc. Lookin' like a "killer" day. -
I built a 5' x 6' blind from a pressure treated 2x6 frame, two cattle panels, a layer of black plastic and some camo tarp. I also have an Ameristep Brickhouse that I move around when I'm trying to get out of the weather. Your blind looks great! I like the cement footings.

Amazing pics! Thanks for sharing a bit of your trip with us. -
Their mill is in the next town over from where I grew up. They have a sale every November where they sell blemished or less than perfect socks for 50% off. My family has gifted me quite a few pairs over the years. They are a great product IMO.

I have hunted two different pieces that were 5-6 acres. As Bionic suggested, it matters what is around it. One has woods and fields around it. I usually see decent movement. The other has 2 new houses next to it. That one doesn't work anymore. By making any habitat improvements that you can (food, cover, water etc) and hunting it carefully, 5 acres can produce year after year. I have access to a few hundred acres, but I have taken 4 bucks off those two little properties over the years.

Last year's venison steak on the grill. After dark in November and it's still 54 degrees!

Congrats to Chef and Spiff for getting it done! Good luck to anyone tracking. I'm out of the woods for these warm days. Probably won't hunt until Saturday when rifle season opens here in the 802. Still next to no signs of the rut. No big bucks on cameras. It's almost here though. Any day now... -
I have a pair of Dryshod Legends for kicking around, work, turkey and bow hunting sometimes. They aren't a cold weather boot. I can say they have stood up well and I think they are better made than the Mucks they sell these days. Can't speak to the two models you mentioned, but I have had a positive experience with the brand overall.

243 winchester vs 44 magnum for deer which would you pick ?
stubborn1VT replied to phantom's topic in General Chit Chat
To many the .243 is the minimum caliber for whitetails, yet it is also Too much gun and causes massive damage and Huge meat loss? Something doesn't add up here. I've shot a pile of deer with a 7mm Rem Mag and the one time I lost a bunch of meat was when I shot one square in the shoulder. The .243 is a fine round for a young hunter who puts in some range time. I don't have anything against the .44, but I think it has fewer applications. I imagine that finding ammo could be fairly difficult. -

Had one run in close when I was bird hunting one time. He looked about four feet long! I have to admit I was a bit nervous too! -

Compared to working all day? It's a great day/time to be in the woods IMO. There are worse things than spending a day in the woods without seeing a deer. -
More archery kills in the PM. More rifle kills in the AM.

Seems like you're about due with all the activity around your place. Knock one down!!! Live from the livingroom for me. 26 degrees out when I got up. Heavy frost. Work today and then hopefully hunt the farm this weekend. Work Monday and Tuesday, then I should be off for the rest of the year (other than a few firewood deliveries). Good luck everyone. -

Nada for me. Guy showed up to mow in the field next to me at 5:50. Tractor and flail mower were ridiculously loud. Guess I should have stayed by the stove... -

Going to go sit the hedgerow here at the house. I don't have high hopes. Last couple card pulls were bear, coyote, small buck, all at night. I keep telling myself that it will be good to get out. I'm pretty comfortable by the wood stove though... Good luck to all that are out and Good Luck Chris. -

In my spots I can still find apples on the ground, but the acorns are cleaned up. For what it's worth... -
From a camera check in Central Vermont I would say that bucks are covering more ground, for sure. Finding a few active scrapes. Cameras are still showing 90% of buck movement is at night and I don't have a picture of anything older than 1.5. I would call all this pre-rut activity. I'm hoping it turns on soon. Then again, our rifle season starts in 10 days. If they want to wait until then to start chasing I can add 300ish yards to my effective range.

Made the drive to the farm for a PM sit. Saw a rutted up spikehorn beside the road at 2:30. Checked a few cams and it was pretty much just spikes and forks in the dark. The wind kept switching from SW to N. I was glad I didn't sit one of my better spots. Saw a doe and fawns about 300 yards across the posters. I'm hoping it's just getting started and it gets better. This evening was uninspiring. -

Guess I should have hunted. Rain hasn't amounted to much. Yet. I sort of wish I had set up a popup blind somewhere. Then again, when I hunt out of one I feel half blind. They are nice for staying out of the weather though.
