  1. I have a couple Bushnell Elites and love them. Not sure they make them anymore, or at least not under that name. You did swap a non-functional scope for a functional one. I get where you are coming from though.
  2. I just looked at prices on small, 3 point hitch roller/crimpers. I guess I won't be investing in one of those. The results from using cereal grains as mulch and weed suppression are impressive though.
  3. Trail cam pictures showed it clear enough for me. Not interested in debating it. I have seen this twice. Once with a 30-06. That buck was killed over a week later trailing a doe.
  4. Nice shooting! Nothing like having your time and efforts rewarded.
  5. I have seen this. Shot was taken on level ground. Pass through under the spine. Buck lived.
  6. Good info and I'm glad they treated you right. I carried Gerber Gator folders for years. I don't know how many of those suckers I lost while gutting deer. I finally switched to a fixed bladed Winchester knife that I got for Christmas one year. Haven't lost that one yet. Knock on wood. I think it's similar to cheap sunglasses. I lose/scratch/break any expensive pair, but the cheapos won't go away!
  7. Fawns look "round" because they have such a short frame. I'm not buying this as a 1.5 year old whitetail. It was basically a button buck that grew spikes. I also had an adult doe in sight to compare him to, as well as several fawn sightings from the same stand for reference. 100lbs vs 70lbs vs 45lbs isn't that hard to determine.
  8. No way. As someone wrote above, the late born fawns catch up just fine. I have never shot a 1.5 year old buck that was less than 100 lbs. I believe he was a big fawn, not a small 1.5. Could be wrong, but he looked short and round to me.
  9. I wondered about this. Had an adult doe in front of me at 45 yards during rifle season. She was in the neighborhood of 100 lbs. I hear grunting and out comes a 70 lb spike with 3-4" antlers. I seriously doubt he was 1.5 years old. The only other explanation is that he is a big fawn with spikes. Saw him two more times during the season, cruising with his nose to the ground.
  10. I don't know of any advantages of one over the other. I used winter rye that I got free from a farmer friend of mine. It will truly grow just about anywhere. I planted it as a cover crop for clover in the woods under some mature white pines. It grew great and re-seeded itself. I have had people tell me that winter wheat is more attractive to deer. I believe it prefers better growing conditions than rye. I might lean toward wheat if you are planting in an open area, and rye if you are working in the woods. Good luck!
  11. Did he give you any tips for hitting coyotes? Kidding. Good luck Moog. Knock 'em dead.
  12. Welcome to the site Dave. Like you, I am not from New York. There are lots of experienced hunters on here and it's a pretty active site. I spend a week fishing on Lake Kipawa most summers, so I am somewhat familiar with your neck of the woods. I really enjoy getting out on the water and away from town. Glad to have ya here!
  13. Crusade on on Chris. It's not about offending anyone, just a difference in approach and opinion. The shot is more lethal and effective than you know. You are basing your theory on theory, not experience. A circle of hunters who track deer in the big woods, or hunters who drive deer would condone ass shooting deer I would bet. It's no different than shoulder shooting deer in many ways. We aren't going to agree, but spare me the moral outrage.
  14. My buddy had both wrists done last winter. He hasn't said anything about shooting, but he hasn't done much this year due to time constraints. He also said that it wasn't 100% effective. Good luck! I will probably have to have it at some point due to many hours running chainsaws.
  15. I'm not sure why you get to decide what's right or wrong or ethical. You do you. Going after Wolc does more harm that good IMO. You are complaining about a shot you won't take. That's fine. Wolc has first-hand experience that it works for him. Also fine. It's great that we are all passionate about hunting and deer, but IMO this kind of soapbox is worse for the future of hunting than Dick's or any other anti campaign.
  16. I researched this before the season. It's not worth it to me to have the plug modified. I don't like the idea of vent liner. It would be cheaper than replacing the ML! Thanks anyhow. I'm leaning toward a CVA Wolf with a factory BH breech plug.
  17. You tell 'em! Hunters judging and lecturing other hunters. That's what we all need.
  18. Go get 'em Crappy! Nothing wrong with hunting in the rain. You took a reasonable, close range shot. Hope it's an easy track / recovery.
  19. Timothy will only get so tall and thick. I would be tempted to leave it tall and mow trails or strips in it. Either that, or till the who thing up and plant brassicas, as they would stand up better to the snow.
  20. Winter rye as a nurse crop for clover. You could also mix in a little chicory or some brassicas.
  21. This is a bummer. He's a grinder and an innings eater. The Red Sox are going to miss his competitive attitude and those innings...
  22. As a pitching coach or manager, this would make me think twice about "wasting" a pitch!
