Went back to camp last week for the pa opener sat. Got a ton of work done one the farm thu. And fri. Put matt at the turkey tree and I went to one of my other farm properties. I had 2 2yo birds come in off the roost that I let walk, matt sent a text at 630 and said 2 birds are in the big field across the road and going down the hollow to get around to that end of the field. I told him to wait I would be there soon. Once I picked him up I explained if he had tried that it would not if worked out as that entire hollow is multifloral rose and no way to get at those birds. So I took him out the lower edge of the pasture which is almost 3/4 of a mile long. 4 times I stopped and laid out calls with the bomber and got a response that he never heard. Finally the dominate bird crested a small rise 200 yards out and cut off one of my calls . I told matt we gotta set up here as it gets too thick for too far before it opens back up and this birds coming fast. I told him to set at that tree and face that way, he days but the birds over there..... look you wanna kill that bird he's going to go over there to get under the fence and come into that opening. I started working the call and was met with thundering gobbles every time. He walked past us in the pasture to the high wire opening dropped down and came on a string to soft clucks and putts from the bomber. We hit another property that held another target bird and got him to respond but time was not on our side and had to walk away from him still hammering at noon. I knew it was too far and too little time when dealing with that bird. Got back to ny and last night went to roost a bird, ended up having him walk by me at 6 feet along with his 7 hens. Got in early and set up, he didn't gobble till late and had moved 80 yards east. With all the hens I wanted to be the first he heard and he cut off my tree talk. Once it was legal light I did a fly down with the wing and gave him a good dose of bomber talk. He flew down to the strut zone and displayed for 20 minutes until he finally got into a position I could give him more talk. That was all he could take and slowly strutted to me gobbling all the way. He gobbled his last gobble at 6am. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Had the grandkids down to camp for the mentored youth season in pa. I had tons of work to do so I went early to get stuff done and do some scouting before saturday. We got in tight on the good bird I had found and had gotten eyes on so I knew what he was. Just after we set up it started raining and continued till daylight, just as it stopped he gobbled below us but more to the east of where he had been the last 2 mornings. I wanted to move the blind but we had 2 hens 50 yards out right on the edge of the field. He gobbled again from the limb so I gave some soft clucks and yelps on the bomber and he lit up the woods and flew down. I gave him more yelps and clucks that he thundered back on. About 10 minutes later I see him crest the rise of the cut field. He works his way up to the flat and when he saw the decoy he went white and into full strut. He started drumming, his first drum was probably the loudest I have ever heard from a gobbler. We had Addison on the field pod and the 20 ga. Was ready, he strutted right up and bumped the hen decoy from the front and worked around to the back of it and was trying to get on her back when Addison shot.......not only smokin the gobbler but also my avian lcd hen decoy.... you can not compare NY to PA. the states are not even close by a long shot with hunter densities, and terrain has very little to do with AR success or failure. what will also skew your perceived numbers is the vastly different hunting regulations like the fact that PA has a 250 sq. inch florescent orange requirement at all times while big game hunting unlike the NY regulation of not mandatory. Also no semi auto firearm for deer or bear. one of the biggest differences is that other than a few small area's the first week of the season is antlered only, the second week is either sex, by then a lot of folks have killed their 1 and only needed deer so the second week see's far less pressure. Are there still hunting accidents (incidents) yes no different than here in NY., the $25.00 fine for mistakenly killing a sub AR buck are handed out few and far between, generally its the 250-500 fine. While the first year of said 25.00 deal quite a few tried to do the right thing and got the stiffer fine and lost the deer, now for the most part sub legal deer are left to rot. jr. hunters follow the old AR restrictions of spike 3" or better. The seasons are set up far different from NY. as well. Since the inclusion of crossbow the archery stamps sales have increased dramatically as well as the "archery" antlered harvest. I believe last years estimate the archery harvest was almost 40% of the entire antler take. I have hunted Pa both as a resident and non resident for going on 39 years, NOTHING has caused more dissension among hunters as the AR/HR ( antler restriction, herd reduction) program. Since the inception of AR more land has been posted and more and more every year gets posted. more and more shooting huts going up, food plots, poaching ( both at night and illegal baiting) bottom line its become a greedy sport as far as deer hunting goes. bottom line is since AR it has become all about the size of the antlers. Granted a lot of the posted land initially was done to protect the antlerless deer, you have NEVER heard shooting like the first year of AR/HR when it was also the first time ever of either sex the monday after thanksgiving. I was there, couldn't even count the shots but I distinctly remember never having a 30 second span from dark to dark without shots being fired that I could hear. They decimated the deer herd in 2 seasons before they put a stop to the combined season the traditional first day. The PGC was reluctant to drop it so people posted to protect the antlerless deer because there are too many people that just HAVE to fill every tag every year. As I have said before, does not matter to me if NY does it or not, its not going to change the way I hunt nor what I choose to shoot. I hunt for the challenge and the enjoyment of time outdoors.

SB 4739 - Establishes the yearling buck protection program
reeltime replied to Rebel Darling's topic in Deer Hunting
i would say the kid needs to learn to properly identify his target, what if he didn't have a antler tag? would he of called it in or just gotten someone else to tag it. KNOW what your shooting at before you pull the trigger or release the string because once its done there is no do over. It doesn't matter if its a monetary fine or loss of a buck tag, If there is a penalty the honest people will turn it in, others will either take their chances getting it out of the woods or leave it to rot in the woods. I have been hunting the PA antler restriction since its inception, my zone was the 4 pts. to a side which is now 3 up (3 up on the main beam not counting brow tines) 1.5 yo bucks are still getting killed, yes we have more 2.5+ bucks and we have some real dandy's BUT they also the first 2 years of AR about decimated the herd with herd reduction. What we have now is far more posted land and far more self management for protecting the doe population. we can not compare ny and pa as the hunter numbers and the overall mentality is far different between the states. whether or not the state goes to AR makes no difference to me, hasn't in pa nor would it here. We already have an AR in ny in some respect, as there was in pa. if you want herd health it requires herd balance to habitat carrying capacity, with the amount of posted land its an almost impossible goal because you can not shoot deer that you can not get to and the state can not force those land owners to open their land to hunting. people should just hunt how they like and should be allowed to shoot what is legal, they paid for their tag not me. like I said it doesn't matter to me if there are AR or not its not going to change what I shoot. from personal experience I can say there is probably not a more volatile subject among hunters than AR, its been the cause of more heated debates, posted land, poaching, and just plain dissension among hunters. If you want to pass up bucks to give them a chance to make it another year there is no problem with doing so, will some of those get shot later? maybe,, but one things for sure if you follow the attitude of well if I don't someone else will only 1 thing is true when YOU shoot it its chances of making it another year just ended. if you let that deer walk he may just make it another year or more. Survival skills of deer 2.5 + go up as they age, 1.5 and 2.5 bucks can be easy to kill, 3.5 they get tougher, the jump they make from 3.5 to 4.5 is unreal and when your hunting 4.5+ bucks you better be on your A game! -
this is one of maytom's beard display board. its on display at my camp and has been a object of conversation since I assembled it and put it up. as others have said Paul's (maytom) work is top notch and is certainly top quality craftsmanship.

i saw this several months back and pretty much just sat in disbelief that they even put that on the air,,,, my question is WHAT was going through the bowhunters mind when he was being told that??? I don't know what my response woulda been but it most likely would not of made it on the air...LOL

all i can say is consider the source! hopefully someone with little experience searching for info that happens upon this thread reads ALL the replies so they see that under NO circumstances do you try to load and fire ammo that is not a direct fit for that firearm! actually I would say that his post should be removed as it could lead to a deadly situation!
