  2. the goal of the day is not to fall in the water...... sorry couldn't resist
  3. most of the boats you will see out once the weather temps dip to freezing or below are outboards. The main reason is its generally difficult to winterize inboard motors on a daily basis. with an outboard you pull up on the ramp after retrieving your boat trim the motor down and let it drain out.... all done winterizing and ready to go the next day. our late split season for ducks doesn't start this year till 12/31 and runs till the 15th of jan. there will be a lot of boats on the water at that time. basically any open water in the migratory bird western zone from lake ontario to the pa boarder it there is open water and ducks on it someone will be hunting it.
  4. there are still some work boats in the water. tugs, barges doing dock work, may even be some ships hauling cargo through the st. Lawrence. there are also a number of boats working the larger rivers fishing trout/salmon some working close to the entrance of rivers to the lake. Also a USCG small craft advisory is any vessel under 65 feet in length.
  5. i would be having a 1 sided conversation with that person and it would not be a friendly one at that! completely uncalled for...ever.. under ANY circumstance, and for absolutely NO reason. ! as far as the original post content, again absolutely no excuse whatsoever for that to happen. Once again another hunter that is extremely careless and even more so extremely lucky that a person was not hit. people need to wake up and remember SAFETY is your #1 priority when hunting, there is not a deer walking the planet that is worth risking someones life for. with the technology out there today saying you didn't know there was a house there is not a valid excuse! know your area, know your target and know whats beyond your target as not following that statement cause affect you for the remainder of your life as well as the entire family of the victim. this is not hollywood, nor a video game, there are no retakes, do overs, resets, pauses, once you pull the trigger its done so you better be sure what and where your shooting.
  6. Yup but he is only 2.5 and close to 120" so he should be nice next year. He should be walking by again soon. I want that doe fawn my target 12 is with to walk by instead. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  7. Minga it's like summer time. Yeaterday it was cold enough for insulated coveralls today it nice to be back in uninsulated coveralls. Passed up the same 10 pt. 2 more times. Yesterday afternoon I had a small button buck walk right up to me. He smelled the end of the muzzleloader and just stood there till I said BANG..... he.may have pooped a little bit...those button bucks are pretty dumb unfortunately that's why so many get shot. 8. the weapon does not have to be loaded to meet the menacing statute of the law someone comes in any store with a firearm, magazine and ammo it most certainly should be a cause for heightened awareness of the situation and getting control of the firearm is priority number 1. as far as the other response goes,,,, well we would expect nothing different since they just type things against the grain of salt just to troll for responses.
  9. unsafe gun handling should not ever be tolerated whether its in ones home, camp, the field or a store! whether it be the clerk or another customer if they observe unsafe gun handling they should speak up and at the least the clerk should take back possession of the firearm! As far as this story goes the authorities should have been immediately contacted, as far as no response from corporate folks I would go back and ask to speak with the store manager and if they are not aware of the incident have them review the video and talk to the clerk so that any future incidents can be handled properly. turn this negative occurrence into a positive training tool.
  10. so sorry to read this and my deepest condolences to you and your entire family.
  11. Been in the stand over an hour as I knew it would be noisy walking. Had the 2.5 10 point walk under me again. Passed him yesterday afternoon At 20 yards 630 am he went by at 5 yards. Can hear them a mile away it seems. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  12. while true you can road hunt get out and shoot at game in NY BUT you have to be off the maintained portion of the roadway, so wherever the town/county/state highway maintains ( plows, mows, trims) you have to be beyond that. also taking into consideration that unless you have permission to be on the property you now have a trespassing issue even the act of shooting the game on posted property makes it an illegal kill. people that do this give us all a black eye, the penalties are too small and the laws are poorly written thus giving these people all kinds of loopholes. not all states are as laxed as NY, in pa you can not use a vehicle to find game. so in pa your driving down the road see a deer hop out run 100 yards into the woods and shoot that deer you can still be arrested. I wish they had more deer and turkey decoys and more importantly the manpower to run those stings. it just makes no sense to me how someone can drive down the road see a big buck jump out and shoot it then have it mounted and then look at it every day knowing they poached it...... but then again poachers do not have a conscious so its all good I guess but the rest of us live with the black eye they give the rest of us sportsman.
  13. i can remember as a little kid seeing a sci fi show on bigfoot, scared the bejeebers out of me. I ran upstairs and measured from my bedroom window to the ground it was under 7 foot so i was sure a bigfoot was going to be able to get me. so what does a 7 year old kid do? i got a shovel and dug a deep hole under my window so it was at least 9 feet to the window. man did that ever not go over well with my parents!!! my response was either leave the hole or make room for me cause bigfoot isn't gonna eat me.. the hole stayed for a while, was fenced off but it was there for at least a year. did grow out of it and know there are no bigfoots, werewolves, mt. lions etc. that are going to eat me alive.
  14. This knife was a gift from 2 of the guys at camp back in 1980 after they watched me gutting a deer with my small pocket knife I had gotten at the ripe olé age of 6. Of course neither of them did a good job of cutting through butter but ya use what ya brung.[emoji12] After using my newly required "hunting" knife a few times I convinced dad to put an edge on it, he can put an edge on a blade that you can literally shave with. Since then it's been in my pack every trip and has gutted and skinned hundreds of deer with just a touch up every few years. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  15. cant help ya on either of those models, i have the cva magbolt 150, have had it for 15 years probably and have killed a number of deer with it. it loves 100 gr. triple 7 with power belts. The longest shot I ever took with it on a deer was just over 200 yards, Ive done a lot of bench practice with it, actually shooting with black powder can be a lot of fun and you can burn thru a lot of powder and bullets before you realize you have shot so much. one thing to consider is what scope they have attached for the package, generally its a low end at best generic scope. I would say buy the gun bare and put good optics on it. one thing I will tell you is that cleaning is an absolute must! black powder and its alternatives is VERY corrosive. just a few newbie tips if your interested. - clean the barrel well before firing it the first time, generally the barrels are coated with a heavy oil or grease from the factory. - after cleaning and swabbing out the barrel and BEFORE loading the pellets put a primer on the nipple and fire the gun, generally this will burn out any residual cleaning solution. - work on a load, bullet combo to find what recipe your gun likes. most of my experience is that black powder guns perform better below max load, my cva is rated up to 150 gr. of powder but at 150 it prints all over the paper, with 100 gr. it just about cuts holes. black powder burns at a much slower rate than conventional rifle, pistol, shotgun powder so generally the extra powder doesn't fully burn before the bullet leaves the barrel thus causing extra fowling. - when loading the gun you want to make sure the bullet is seated on the powder but don't hammer it down or you run the risk of breaking the pellets. - once you get a recipe worked up that your gun likes take your ramrod after loading insert the ramrod down the barrel just as you would while loading. with the ramrod setting on the bullet mark the ramrod flush with the barrel, with a composite ramrod just nick the ramrod with a hacksaw blade and put a dab of white paint in the nick. This will allow you to instantly check to see if there is a charge in the barrel. too many times people have double loaded a gun. - more than with conventional guns if you do not shoot the gun to empty it nightly you remove the primer and to law enforcement the gun is considered unloaded. if your going to leave the gun loaded between hunting trips I would strongly suggest leaving the gun in an unheated protected area, bringing it in and out of the house from warm to cold causes the metal to sweat, black powder and moisture do not mix and actually real black powder will draw moisture out of the air, the bp alternatives like triple 7 or pyrodex are not near as bad but if the pellets get wet or damp your going to have issues. - you can use a small balloon or tape over the end of the barrel for keeping moisture out also. - make sure to not skip cleaning the nipple and flash hole in your cleaning process. if anyone else can add anything I may have missed please feel free to do so, people that don't have bp experience have a wealth of knowledge/info at their fingertips today unlike us old fogies had back in the day
  16. I Know it's not an in the field pic but I was not in a good photo condition in the field. It's a long story,,, outcome is dead deer and no trip to hospital for me needed. I passed this buck the last Tuesday of bow because I could not guage his antlers or get an age on him with my small area where I could see him. Him and 3 other bucks came out in the newly planted hayfield which gave me a long time to look him over before I shot. 250 yards off the cauldwell field pod system. 18,5" wide , 5.25" bases, 180 lbs dressed. i have 8' ceilings in the shop and still had to tie his head up to get his nose off the floor. 17. All depends on your local deer herd. If your seeing a good number of doe then keeping them in balance is a good thing. If your not seeing the numbers then I would not be shooting doe. It baffles me when I hear people say I didn't see many deer all season but the last day I saw a big doe so I shot her.... in the next breath they ask why they don't have any deer around. You also have to look at habitat, is it deer favorable? Big woods, mature woods will support a smaller herd than a regeneration or farm land. When you have good habitat You can manage your deer population to what the habitat will support. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  18. Don't feed the trolls, a bullet fired from a 30 06 at relatively close range still carrying most of its speed and kinetic energy travels from the anal opening through the entire deers body exiting the neck and the guts came out clean as a whistle.....ummm yeah ok. Just another story teller to try and convince people he's a mighty hunter. Taking high risk shots, bad angle shots all the while thinking there is some kind of divine intervention guiding the bullets and broadheads shows that the shooter has little to no care nor respect for the animals they hunt. Worse yet is these same people brag it up all over town and the Internet and it paints a poor picture of all hunters. Claiming that people that call you out as being under pressure from not filling a tag shows that you just don't grasp the concept that while this outcome was a quick death doesn't mean they all are going to turn out that way,,, play low odds long enough and your going to come up the looser. 19. thanks bionic, believe me its right place right time whether your in big woods or farm country. persistence pays off.
  20. oh yeah Paul's work has a special place at my camp. maybe you and him will have to make a spring road trip and forget your way home for a few days.

  22. More mounts made the trip to camp. Had. To move 1 deer head to make room for the triple beard limb mount from this past spring. Fish had to be moved to make room for deer heads and the ring neck mount.... it may be time for an addition. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  23. it may be because ny has no mandatory flo. orange. most states require orange during firearm season. its ridiculous the numbers of early and late shots. 5:40 am yesterday morning around beaver dams NY 2 hunters lives changes forever. even though a non fatal shooting likely a life changer, as far as i am concerned should be criminal charges and lifetime revocation for the shooter.
  24. As others have said tough angle. To me he looks like a really healthy 2.5 , still exhibits deep pronounced shoulder and hip pockets, straight line back and stomach profiles, also the snout looks to still be on the slender side. He has good width but seems to be lacking in mass. Nothing personal it's a nice looking buck that a lot of people would be happy to put a tag on. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
