  1. so the news story is they got themselves out...... but the rescuers went out to retrieve their gear? That to me is absolutely foolish! the people were safe, they can buy new gear! lesson learned! I can tell you when I was a chief in my dept. there is NO way I am sending my guys out to get your gear! I have always said that people that venture out on sketchy ice do not even think about the people that are going to risk their life to save them. I always told my fire/ems personnel that water rescues are the most dangerous rescues you will encounter, if the person is drowning or believes they are going to drown and they get a hold of you you are in serious trouble as they will drown YOU to stay alive! Sorry to rant but I have no tolerance for stupidity on sketchy ice, and even less when you risk the lives of fire/ems personnel and THEIR families lives.
  2. No good ice, saw 3 people walk out to fish. Ice is soft and going away fsst. We drilled holes along a dock and beat up the perch. I also got a crappie and a mud puppy... first of those thru the ice on a jig rod. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  3. yeah never a good idea to take chances on sketchy ice. I always think about the folks that have to risk their lives to come save mine,,,,, I used to be the one risking my life to safe the ones foolish enough to venture out on thin/bad ice. there is not a fish swimming worth risking your life over.. with that being said I am gonna try something today while not being on the ice will require drilling holes in the ice to fish.... should prove interesting.
  4. Not a bad few hours on the ice but it was going away quick. I will not be venturing out again till we get a refreeze. Put another 6 lbs of clean fillets in the freezer so my perch supply is building back up. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  5. i have one in the freezer, not sure how well it would fare all the way out there or how much it would cost. or you looking to have one mounted here and shipped out there?
  6. nice batch of fish Chris
  7. you mean the captain didn't offer a runny egg and greasy sausage sandwich? LOL congrats on the fish.
  8. The best one today just under a pound & 3/4 Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  9. With the light rain was no chance of getting on the metal roof to finish up that part of the job so with ice on and perch present and a light rain ziva and I headed out to fish. Lots of water on the ice so we headed back to the last hole from yesterday on the weed bed. Didn't take long and the perch were there, had 5-10 minute waits between the slobs but when they swam in they bit good. Once the downpour started the sunnys and gills showed up and there was so much water pouring in the holes you couldn't sight fish anymore so we packed up and walked back..well more like I walked and ziva rode the sled. 10. they are strong if done straight from the bird. i know someone that made a bunch of them into corned scoter and they tasted just like corned beef. we are going to try all the ducks and geese into summer sausage .
  11. have had a few over the years while hunting. the one that probably scared me the most was 3 years ago. I was hunting with a friend and his 12 yo son ( his first year hunting) we were setup for divers along the lake shore and I had also put out a few mallard decoys. we were setting on/in among some big rocks. I was to the left, kid in the center, his dad to the right. I had already laid out the zone of fire for the kid prior to legal shooting time, and again just at LST. everything was good and we had a good number of divers when I look to the west ( my left) and I see a pair of mallards high but looking and cupping up to drop into the decoys. a few soft calls and they were fully committed. When the time was right I raised the gun and dropped the drake mallard, next thing I know I am in the water! and my ears are ringing so loud I can barely hear.. Took me a split second to realize the kid had shot after I did at the hen mallard!!! he had shot at a dropping into the decoys bird right over top of my head! I about completely lost my mind, probably said words he had never before heard in his life, his father didn't know what to say and as I told him probably best not to say anything to me. We were done! I said we are picking up these decoys and we are done hunting! my hat still smelled of gun powder.... like I told him had he waited a split second longer he would have shot me right in the back of the head at point blank range! Rest assured I will NEVER hunt with him again!
  12. new cap & rotor? valves, guides, springs, and lifters would be as much as a motor?? none I have ever done. these new motors are so finiky even excessive moisture in the fuel will make it throw a missfire code.
  13. Been working over the perch, poor man's shrimp a couple nite and a perch fry tonight. Caught 3 bass and a Cisco today also they were All released I remembered to take a picture of the last bass. Ziva watching the ice hole for perch. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
  14. Ziva ain't spoiled, like I said she goes where I go. She loves to sled ride and now she insists on riding in the ice shanty sled on the way out and back ice fishing. I said we are leaving so she hopped aboard for her ride back. She has been the talk of the ice fisherman watching her ride the sled. You should see her riding the taboggan when we have snow on the hill. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

  16. a sound clip of Ziva after a hard days work,, makes for a long night with that noise next to your ear., this wasn't even a day after being on the water, those days the snoring is even worse! https://www.facebook.com/reeltime.charters.7/videos/vb.100003527413644/1023700261090878/?type=2&theater

  18. I will have to see if I can find the video of Ziva putting her ducks in a pile and dancing around them... she is a great dog but she can be really special sometimes.

  21. i have a handfull of 835's, they are all fine with 3" shells but even with the ported barrel the 3.5" shells pound your shoulder. I bought a winchester sxp 3.5 chamber 12 a few years ago and even with using it so much it takes time getting the rhythm of cycling the action as its "recoil assist" which means the action opens when the guns fired so to chamber the next round you just slide the action forward.... this was really foreign to me after almost 40 years of shooting mossy 500's and later 835's. as I said pattern the gun and see what it looks like, you can try polishing the barrel, I have done a number of them for turkey set ups and it improves the pattern immensely. also as I said try an after market kicks choke. my waterfowl 835 loves #2 steel with an extra full kicks choke and you would be surprised how far that gun will hold a pattern. just remember, the tighter the pattern you have for your "long range" shooting desire means you have to be dead on on birds under 25 yards and if body hit you will have heavy meat damage. if you desire to shoot 3.5" shells there will be a noticeable difference in recoil -vs- the 3" shells, you will also need to pattern the 3.5" shells as they will likely pattern differently. what little you gain in pellet count often times you give up speed I like 1550/1560 fps shells. also there is a vast difference in cost per box between the 2 again not sure its worth all the drawbacks.
  22. poor mans shrimp ( boiled fresh perch ) and creamy seafood skillet. was a nice treat after being out all day in the cold.
  23. not sure Law, :-) the buffleheads, old squaws, and scoters are not here all summer and rarely here before the late split season. the old squaws are the bats of the waterfowl world they zig and zag and zip and dive, alot of fun gunning but hard to hit and not good table fare but make great training birds as they are small, strong scented birds so they work excellent for blind scent retrieve training. scoters are a big sea duck. bold as a bull but extremely hard to kill, we never saw them here in any numbers until about 8 years ago now we see them in small numbers each year, I had my eye on a pair of surf scoters that were here the week before season, never heard of them being shot but would not be surprised if the person that shot them just thought they were the more common white wings. they are not bad when mixed in with other ducks and geese and processed into summer sausage. im sure you know what mergansers are, being a fisherman while we don't specifically target them generally we do shoot them, when they congregate in large numbers they can put a serious hurting on our baitfish and 2 year classes of perch, sunnys, gills, and bass. again another non edible bird but good for training.
  24. Had a decent shoot this morning. Until the ice came in and clogged us up. No good birds but good birds to save for off season training. Had a drake white wing scoter walk away after ziva did a retrieve on it and that 1 got away I had 5 in possession but shot 6 so I was done. Got them wrapped good and in the freezer. Then hit the ice and got a bucket of perch. It was a tough season weather wise and bird numbers...was worse on the body,,, went through the ice 1 day, got some bad leg bruises over that one. Then the next day I dropped a drake bluebill on the ice and ended up taking a hard spill when my feet went out from under me and ended up landing hard on my right shoulder. Spent that night with icy hot and advil and more advil before the next days hunt....not sure what I did to my shoulder but it's still pretty sore and quite bruised. Time to clean up gear, sort decoys, clean out the boat, and recover from the season. This sight made my heart stop for a few seconds. Luckily it was blood from the buffie.
