I didn't look for any shavings as I was very surprised to see it. Not 100% sure if it is a rub so maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. It is located in an area with numerous old rubs from last year and years passed.
-
Kind of thought the same thing when I saw it...what could have made it if it isn't a rub?
-
I stumbled across this "fresh" rub on Sunday while turkey hunting with my nephew. I have never in all my years of hunting or walking through the woods have seen such a recent rub this late in the year. Anyone else ever come across one this late?

Congrats Matt!! That is awesome bud.

Not till the end of the month Wooly. I'll be up at bat the 29th and 30th!! Besides the smile on my face is bigger when my nephew gets one rather then I.

It's not a plaque. It's a copper trough call that I used to call the bird in. The back looks better then the front so I turned it around for the pic. Lol

Last week I worked this same bird but he had hens with him and wouldn't fall for my calling while having the real deal with him. This morning I took my nephew out for the first time this season. We arrived at my buddy's place at 4:30 and started getting ready for the morning's hunt around 4:45. As we were getting ready he hammered us with his morning wake up call from the same location where he was roosted last week. We quickened our pace and got set up within 60 yards of him as I knew exactly where he was roosted. He gobbled his fool head off this morning!! I gave him some real soft purrs and clucks and he went crazy!! Around 5:15 I gave him a fly down cackle and he lost his mind altogether. Wasn't long after that he flew down and he was only 30 yards from us!! I told my nephew to shoot him as soon as he was ready and not a minute later he had his first longbeard of the season!! 19lbs, 9.5" beard and 1" spurs

Very cool!!

That was in southern Italy. In Calabria and I think in the woods of Sila.

I hunted the first three days and the silence was deafening!!

Before I announce the winner I'd like to thank Paula and Wooly for taking on the challenge of being judges for the contest. I'd also like to congratulate the youth hunter's and their mentors. I'm sure the youngsters got a lot more out of the hunt then just the kill. It was a tough decision but all three judges came to a unanimous decision...the results are as follows. The winner of the youth contest this year is G-man's nephew Ryan. Second place goes to Terry's son Hunter. Congrats to the winners and to all who participated in this year's contest. God willing I will be running this contest once again next year and hopefully it will be even bigger and better. Yes I posted the winners a day early because we agreed on the winners and no need in keeping the youth's in suspense.

Congrats Joe!! I see that boxcall is serving you well!! -
As mentioned it's hard to say but could be that he was a jake and when he saw the jake/tom decoy he thought twice about coming in. Could be he took a thrashing from another gobbler and said no thanks to another.

Congrats!! There's another entry for the youth contest!!

I've been using Feather Flex for years. They are easy to set up and convenient to carry and I really don't think the toms are that particular about detail. I just acquired a DSD decoy which I won and it is very true to life in detail. Only problem is that it isn't collapsible and will be a bit of a pain to carry. I hunt mountain birds and the less I can carry the better off I am. With that being said I will put it to use at some point this season...probably when my nephew is with me so he can carry it!!

Any info would be greatly appreciated about the deer and turkey hunting in the Stratford area. Are the deer numbers good and is the turkey hunting good? Like I said any info is appreciated!! Thanks...
