  1. Two years ago I shot a deer in muzzle I thought was a doe but it was a shed buck. Walked over to deer and had to reload to finish it. Realized it had just lost it's horns and where I was I should've seen it walk in. So started tracking in snow to see where it came from and if sheds there. Found it had a fresh bed in the snow in some thick stuff 40 yards away. As I stood there a HUGE buck jumps up and starts running. It was bedded 40 yards from there as well and it sat tight even after two gunshots and me walking around. One of the biggest I've ever seen and couldn't get a bead on him for a shot. He sat right there tight as can be thru all that. I think we have no idea how many we walk by and never see.
  2. Tried something different. Used a box stuffing in sage flavor and put in cooked crumbled onion and pepper sausage. Then eggs over. Kinda like a scrapple. It was good. And Charlie patiently waiting for his egg.....
  3. Hunt #36 12/2. 7F wayback stand. Light -9. Cold and windy. Didn't see anything or any fresh tracks.
  4. They wish they had him down there. The lighting would have been amazing!
  5. Couldn't come up with a reason after pondering it for a couple hours. But I did come up with several not to so back home. Nott going out this afternoon but out all day tomorrow.
  6. I have a few different brands but they only have just the one hole for the screws and knobs. Gonna drill some new ones in the summer to adjust them higher for sure. So can have them lower for bow and higher for gun.
  7. Should be able to pivot quite a bit but could pull gun out of it and shoot freehand still. But if it's in the middle of rail I should be able to cover most of the direction I am facing.
  8. I'm looking at this, but it seems unavailable. Would like to have something that just sets on the rail and I can leave my gun in it. Then stock under my arm and hands in my muff to stay warm. Then can just pull up and shoot. This looks good but would want it to mount on the rail. So far I'm liking buck Masters idea cause I can adjust it to the right height and just pull up and shoot without adjustment.http://liveoaktek.com/products.html
  9. I think I know what u mean. Was just looking for something small to use . I was thinking one of those handy man clamps on the rail too.
  10. It's weird some I have are fine, but a lot of them are so low I can't even scooch down and use it for gun. I am not a tall guy too.
  11. I was going to try my shooting stick tomorrow, but apparently I will have to get another. Can't find it anywhere. I was pretty sure I bought one this summer to replace the one I left in the Dacks a few years ago. I didn't lose it, I know exactly where it is. It requires a 2 hour drive then to launch a boat and row for a while to an island. Lol.
  12. Now that is genius! I'm gonna have to look them over to do that over the summer.
  13. i also do that and then put camo ducktape over them. But they still seems to be too low. Plus for bow it works great being low but for gun not so much. Thinking maybe i can make some sort of rig i can carry wiht me or make cheap for a lot of stands
  14. was thinking of trying that but the floor of the stand is grated and i am thinking it will go thru it. Plus i would like it to be out a little farther to put the gun out more over the rail (fat guy in a little treestand syndrome) . I am going to try that though. I have seen the bog pods but i dont want to cart one of those and have to set it up everytime for 13 different stands. But i will give it a try this week
  15. Any one make or come up with a good way to put a rest for rifle on a ladder treestand rail? all my stands have the flip over bar but it is too low to actually be used as a gunrest. Archery is great cause i put my bow on it and can shoot over most of it esp the lower sides. But it would be nice to have a solid rest to put on the shooting rail for long shots. I did find one online but thought someone here might have a homeade idea or something they use.
  16. i never understood why you would want the monday opener. We had a hunting/fishing camp and got together too but it always sucked that half the guys didn't come til the next weekend cause they had to work. Sat opener everyone was there on fri night. Most people, if they could, took the Fri off before and could hunt more, still play cards and hangout. I think it was a great move. Before that we woudl have fun but would rather be hunting, esp after two days of not hunting. And as a young guy I never got monday off once i started working. So the folks that came up on the weeknd basically hung out and only got to hunt monday. Much rather hunt all the days, just couldnt get bombed every night and only have a few. Never understood how people think it hurt businesses. We had lots more people around and out to eat etc with a full weekend to hunt and a packed camp (two actually)
  17. i was surprised too. But just because they are low on enforcement they should def put it in. One more detterent and if someone is caught they can be prosecuted for it.
  18. get that buck ! good luck. I will prob be out tomorrow, i have the rest of the week off after today. And Thursday looks great with prob an all day hunt. A lot of people winding down on hunting now, so will see less and less people out and I am counting on it for a good muzzleloader season.
  19. If your not going to mount a buck like that then let that trespasser guy shoot them. Lol. Wow nice buck. Very unique antlers. And sorry I can only visualize it as a full mount. As most guys.... I can't look past that rack!
  20. Was just thinking . I have a bow spot that is very small and I never get to use it . It seems that every Oct cows get moved to the field temp and the area I hunt is out of play. (Leased by a farmer) . It's only 12 acres and really only about a 100 ft square area is huntable due to cow fields. Hard to explain it's a wierd spot. But the very first time I hunted it shot a doe. If Sept hunting comes in play this might be a early freezer filler for me. And it's in a zone that can't give away enough doe permits. Hmmmm this could work out
  21. Penalties for leaving usable meat. Many states have this already. A lot of times for bigger game like elk and moose where you don't pack out the whole animal and you can't pack out the horns until all the meat is taken. But if someone is shooting a buck just for it's horns they couldnt leave the carcass without penalty with this new law.
  22. i like most of it. Agree with Fletch in that i dont care for the selling of wild animals. Farmed yes but seems like a possible slippery slope here. My spidey sense went off on this one. And I dont want a Sept anterless season. How many guys are passing up that big buck. Oct 1 is early enough. Otherwise looks pretty good!
