  1. is it a three week xbow or just a late xbow ?? thought it was only two weeks? I was thinking xbow would open the 7th but hoping your right!!
  2. DEC site has a spot under seasons for future big game dates. Gun opener is always the 3rd sat in Nov. And xbow is always the two weeks prior to gun season.
  3. anyone take a peak at next year season dates yet?? We were talking at work about time off for next year so i looked at dates quick. Gonna be a weird year. Opening day of southern gun is Nov 21st. Late start for sure. If you arent a bowhunter yet, theres another selling point. Def missing out on a lot of the chasing phase/rut with a late gun start like that. Now my quandary will be when to take off?? i really like the two weeks of crossbow but also like the first two weeks of Nov the best which usually about coincide. Seems after mid Nov I dont see the chasing. Got a while to work on it of course but it will be a bit different for sure. If i take a bunch of time off first two weeks - that will leave the third week and crossbow with me at work and well ......thats just no good! lol
  4. i was thinking that exact thing this weekend. Sitting in two of my stands - was thinking i should have trimmed two different spots for gun lanes that wouldnt effect bow at all. And i didnt even consider it while prepping for this season. My buddy nicked a tree this weekend on a shot at a buck and two years ago it was in the way for his archery shot - can guarantee that tree doesnt have much of a future - lol
  5. this is the only cam i have ever had that hasnt lasted over 2 seasons. If its the one with the quick set - which i think it is- it wouldnt shut off and then the selections were off as well. I think youd be better off buying 2 of the Tasco trail cams for the same price.
  6. As i hunt every year I keep jotting down notes of things I want to do or improve for next year. Already have a 2 page list, i put it in my phone while i am hunting while i think of it, then add it to the list later. Sometimes its as simple as trim branch on some certain stand or its cut a 250 yard 10 yard wide path or move a stand etc. Next seasons biggest project looks to be to get a brush hog. I have to write it down right then or i will forget it . Anyone else do this? Ive already made myself a lot of work for the offseason but thats ok , i enjoy it.
  7. Happy Birthday ! hope its a great one! @Bowshotmuzzleloader
  8. Check out the area of McDonough , not too far from Norwich. Lots of land should be avail there. Buddies wife has family there and hear its awesome hunting .
  9. Hunt #53- 7F lease. Sat on ground on beach trail. Only saw a big fisher. 1:30- dark. No hunting til Thanksgiving morn. Then big push for the weekend. Running out of time and fortitude this season. Thanks though Grampy and Doebuck. I'm still in it.
  10. Hunt #52 - light -10:15. 6S big buck stand. Saw nothing. Buddy Corey shot and missed buck at lease this morn. That sucks. Must've left some of my bad luck in that stand.
  11. Congrats. Nice buck and gonna look great on the wall!
  12. Congrats on some nice bucks!!!
  13. Weird note this year... On lease haven't seen nor heard the neighbors out hunting once this season. Not even opening day. Strange. Have a feeling it's coming to the muzzleloader this year. Sitting in my spot in 6S over a cold cornfield. Hoping at this point it at least happens then.
  14. Hunt #51 - 7 F lease. Light -10:15, 12:15-dark. Nothing. Sat am at corner stand and pm at scrapetree.
  15. Only one I ever saw was run over in Lewis county 30 years ago. My Dad was driving and turned around and said it looked like a rattlesnake in the road. We pulled over and looked and sure enough it was. I guess there are some in most parts of the state but in small pockets.
  16. Simple Tonite. Haven't done take out pizza in a while. Sausage and peppers.
  17. i think it can be said that the most consistantly successful hunters are sometimes very good hunters or have very good locations. Hunting a public area with a lot of competition is def one of the biggest challenges. As i got older i sure got a lot more deer but i think its mostly because i got better locations to access. Now i certainly have to work to get a deer still as my locations are not prime by any means (this has been my worst year in many many years) but having access to private land is prob the best move one can make. Ask people you know well even if they dont own land - a lot of times some family might. The better the hunting ground goes a long way in deer hunting success. But by no means give up what you have, just means it might be a bit tougher but maybe even more rewarding. There are some guys on here that hunt deer heavens - lol - and some hike for miles and miles to find a deer but all have done one thing or another to set themselves up for success as best they could. guess what i am trying to say is that put most of us in that same area you are hunting and we prob dont see much more than you do and would have to learn it all as well. Guys who are seeing 20 deer a day for the most part are seeing that because of the location they have or that they have worked hard to get or improved over the years. A lot of hunting has to do with being in the right spot at the right time. And part of improving your hunting skill is to work to upgrade or find better locations. Saw an interview with Roger Raglin - an older guy that has a hunting show and he said one of the toughest things to tell people when they ask about getting a big buck - he has told them where you hunt your chances are very slim. That its often about the location - that big buck they have on cam at night just isnt very huntable where you are and if he is the only one that is even more difficult. And i love when people say they see deer all over the road and on their lawns and think it is so easy to get one. One of the reasons they are on your lawn in back of your house is because they are safe there. And that person usually also isnt letting you hunt there. Usually consistent success is either having a very good spot and/or a lot of time in the woods scouting and planning and just plain hunting. But dont be down cause you havent seen a deer in a few days and others here are seeing 20 a day. They arent hunting public land for the most part with multiple other hunters.
  18. " Dunno why they call it hamburger helper - its good just by itself"
  19. i have - one time on a different gun tried the same core lokt 3 times it didnt fire. This gun is new and first season using it but fired all preseason just fine. A bullet with a dent in it that didnt fire - just a bad round
  20. Sounds like your starting in a likely spot. If private land grab yourself a trail cam to use, do more scouting in off season after this and before next season. Walk around and see if you jump deer. Not something you want to do while hunting a lot but will give you and idea where they are. Keep the wind in your face and look for well used trails.
