Lawdwaz - I have hunted all around the U.S. and Canada, I know what animals are. I didn't know they were retired. Thats great for them, I would drive too then in that situation. In my case, I fly anything over 8 hours drive, because it allows me to take less days off from work. In regards to the success rates, there are many places in Canada where success rates are close to 100% on big bull moose (not canned hunts either). I have never had an interest in a Moose Hunt, because for $7-10K, I'd rather go for a different species. Just my choice.

But they dont look as nice.

Winchester and Remington just sound cheap lol. Go with the Weatherby!
-
wolf hunt.....where at? I've been on one 1, my Dad has been on 3, and I am going again March 2012.
-
Because a weatherby is as flat shooting as it will get and the gun will last the kid a lifetime. Im 27 and shooting weatherby's that were made in the 1960's passed down from generations. The .243 can be used for a variety of game for him. I wish I got to shoot mine more but i live in a shotgun only county. But I always take the .270 mag and the .243 to trips out west for deer, wolf, antelope, elk, etc...I always bring both guns incase 1 gets jarred on the flight and is way off when I sight-in. My father and I have the Lazermark ones, but if you want to save some $, get the Weatherby Vanguard with the composit stock. you can get the .243 for under $500 this way brand new. Then you just have to get a scope, I'd go with a Leupold, but thats just my opinion and another topic.

Lol, are you serious? Yes, there is a .243 weatherby and always has been. Weatherby makes a beautiful .243 win. Its not a magnum and yes I suggest it for a 9 year old. Thats what I shot when I was that age and I wasnt even 100lbs. Then someday down the road the kid can get a .270 weatherby magnum for bigger game. With the right loads a 13 year old kid with a .243 and .270 magnum can take chucks, yotes, deer, elk, bear, wolf, muleys, antelope, etc.

just doesnt make sense when people try to save $200 on a deer head mount or slightly more on a full body mount of a Mt. Lion, etc. You should be looking for quality of work and not a bargain. You will have the deer head for 30+ years. I look at it like this, so I pay $800 for a deer head, but Its excellent quality and I have it for 30+ years, it comes out like to $25/year! same goes for fish, get a skin and not a repro, and $12/inch or $17/inch insnt a big difference if you want top quality and fish that lasts forever.

you can shoot coyotes year-round (if they are killing your livestock, etc).

Who's hunting Putnam County on October 1st for Turkey/Coyote?
-
2 questions. 1. Why didn't you just fly up there instead of 22+ hours of driving? 2. in regards to "Our party killed 3 cows and 2 small bulls. Two hunters missed larger, palmated bulls.." Are success rates typically this low with this outfitter? if so, what made you choose them? I see that many Moose outfitters have much much higher success rates for clients on nice bulls...

Shotgun season, I usually get to my ground spot 30-45minutes before daylight. Any of the archery hunters, ever run into a bear in the dark walking to their spot?
-
thanks for the advice. In regards of scent and what to wear. I have shot many bucks in Putnam County with the shotgun under 40 yards while sitting against a tree in Blaze Orange head to toe (pants, jacket, hat). I Never wear camo in gun season and wont be doing it for crossbow season in PA. I literally dont move and thats what probable helps me. I have no problem not moving anything but my head to look around for 3-4 hours straight.

Did you cut him open to see what it was? thats nuts man..... Looks like he swallowed a softball!
-
Thanks. Looks like I'll be hunting in fairly heavy laurel(sp?) brush. If I see 1 buck alone at say 50-100 yards away cruising by and not coming any closer, do I grunt or bleat? Attached a few trail cam pics I was sent by the outfitter....weird looking grass/laurel?
-
you gonna mount that velvet one? you should....that would be a great mount.

All my life I have hunted with a shotgun in putnam county or rifle in the catskills for deer in NY. I have never hunted with a bow, so I never really hunted the "rut". The few times I have hunted whitetails out of state it was December, etc. The deer I have shot in NY have come by me sitting against a tree or stone wall watching trails that I know deer take. I never call, rattle, etc. This year I will hunting in Pennsylvania 10/31 - 11/5 with the crossbow. What are some tips for hunting the rut? I will be hunting in an area where there are many signs of nice bucks caught on trail cameras. Im staying with an outfitter at a lodge, but the hunting is by myself on state land and private land. He will place me in a spot where I will sit Monday and Tuesday, then its up to me if I want him to move me to a different spot or not. He has been sending me trail cam pics of nice bucks and likes hes said many times, "you will see bucks, but its up to you to get them close enough to shoot". So my question is, if I see a buck say 75 yards away, how do I get him to 30 yards away? do I grunt call, doe bleat, etc? Im not going to be in a tree stand, i plan to hunt just like I do in NY on the ground, but with a crossbow instead of shotgun, so my limit is 40 yards. Thanks in advance to the bowhunters for their tips/advice. Lastly, this is not a crossbow/archery discussion. Thanks!

Curious if there is a link or anything listing the deer? Was wondering if any came from 3N, 3S, etc? -
Heres the response I got from RHINO. The lid cam has a power button that you simply reach up and press to power the unit on. After a few seconds, press the record button and you are filming The angle of the lens is manually rotated by touch by you. 30 degrees usually is what fits shooting a firearm The cold weather obviously effect the battery. We fully expect it to still last at least a couple of hours in those kinds of temperatures. If I can answer any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! yea problem with the head mount is the key point when your looking through scope and shooting, it wouldn't be video taping the kill shot. thats where maybe this rhino cam that automatically adjusts could be great?
