  1. cant shoot a deer while sitting on your couch right? deer season is short and once a year! get out there!
  2. Top pic is Taconic right before Shrub Oak and Jefferson Valley exits....but the 2nd pic is not putnam county....No snow in Putnam.....YET
  3. Putnam County supposed to get 12"
  4. I got the Rhino Lid cam, which has straight on, 30 degree, and 60 degree angles....I have tested it and it works great.......I will be trying it in PA next week. Im just hoping if I see a buck, I remember to turn it on or have a chance to turn it on before shooting. If not, I can tape my entire trailing and recovery process.
  5. you're correct, can use a crossbow during ML season. HOWEVER, if you want to, you can use a crossbow during the gun season as well. I wouldn't, but some people might want to?
  6. Nice. I went with an Excalibur. It's essentially a recurve crossbow, no cams. I got the Vortex 200lb. Since NYS has a 200lb. limit, otherwise I would have went with a 225. I have the luminox scope. 4 powered, and also has the option to the turn the reticles red for low light times. I think the crossbow will be legalized in archery starting 2013. Doubt westchester county though.
  7. congrats....that had to be frustrating see that 10 though.
  8. 12 ga. Browning BPS Pump Action Shotgun with Leupold scope. 3 out of the 4 bucks I have taken with it, dropped right in their tracks. Shots were 40-80 yards.
  9. isnt there a saying like "dont pass up a deer on day 1 that you would take on the last day?"
  10. Thanks guys. Figured there was a simple answer and I was just overthinking it.
  11. Hey bowhunters, I'm looking for advice. I am going to PA with my crossbow soon and my quiver holds 4 bolts/broadheads. Just for back-up I plan on bringing a couple more and a practice bolt/broadhead I use for targets. How do store your broadheads that can't fit into your quiver for the ride to the lodge and then while at the lodge? Maybe I shouldnt have put the broadheads together yet, and left them in the packaging? I was thinking of taking the broadheads off and putting them in a small tuperware container? Thanks in advance.
  12. Me too! I will be hunting the Moshannon State Forest. AR = 3 points to 1 side minimum. I will have no problem taking a 6 pointer later in my week. Only have 5 bucks in my life. Outside of an 11pt. from Michigan, my 4 NY bucks were 2 spikes, 1 4pt, and 1 small 8pt. I have my crossbow sighted in dead on at 25 yards instead of the standard 20. It is 3" low at 30yd., 5 1/2" low at 35yd. 8 1/2" low at 40. I definitely wont shoot past 35-40. I am used to hunting deer with a shotgun (putnam county), so this could be frustrating if i see bucks 50+ yards away.
  13. Never ended up trying the NJ thing....but heading to PA this upcoming weekend for my first crossbow hunt.
  14. I have yet to get a fox....I missed 1 opening day of the shotgun deer season last year. It was late afternoon and I did a doe bleat call, and out of nowhere a big red fox (beautiful heavy coat) came running in, I was making all types of sounds trying to stop him, but he just kept running looking for the doe? lol...I stood up, couldnt stop him so anyway, he never stopped and I took a shot with the shotgun at about 50-60 yards through some brush, but no luck.
  15. http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/3754-trophy-room/page__hl__%2Btrophy+%2Broom__fromsearch__1 includes many predators such as Wolf, Coyote, Fox, Bobcat, Lynx, Fisher, Mt. Lion, pine Marten, etc....
  16. when people in your family plan their pregnancies, wedddings, etc for the spring.
  17. Opening Day of Shotgun season in putnam county in 2006, at first light i shot a tight 8 pointer. He dropped dead right there. I was pumped. Called my dad on my phone, etc. While im making a raquet on the phone I see a 4 pointer walk out right in front of me. couldnt believe it, but i didnt mind because I got my 8 already. Then it gets bad. While dragging my 8 pointer with my dad, we decide to take a break and we are standing there talking, etc. when 2 big bucks come walking by, both were 8's but much much bigger than mine. it was too late for me since i filled my tag, and too late for my dad since his gun was like 5 yards away against a tree. oh well. The 2 bucks run off and within seconds we here a shot. So we walk towards the shot and some kid hit 1 of them in the belly, we helped track it but he never found it.
  18. you know your a hunter when you have a 24 hour period like this..... 1. all your thinking about is deer season while riding on the train home from grand central 2. and then driving home from the train station your behind someone the whole way who then pulls into their driveway and there are a bunch of deer on the side of his house and looks like a ton of acreage. 3. The next morning at the train station, you're figuring out how to ask that guy for permission to hunt his land without being creepy when saying you followed him home and noticed the deer on his property and then used google maps to look at his land. lol
