  1. PM hunt in uncut soybean field at friends in 9H. Thanks Turkeyfeathers for the snack! I remember when your Dad (RIP) would give us snacks before we checked our trap lines! Fingers crossed with my new scope!!
  2. Good luck Jay! Getting snowed on here....feels deery...the doe pee I spilled in my ground blind is adding to the effect!
  3. I wasn’t out of bed yet and I saw deer...first deer seen all season... hopefully that’s a good sign! Good luck and be safe!!
  4. Yes, the head is gone because a buck beat it a few years ago...I guess I’ll find another head for it and see what happens....and spray some doe in heat urine on its butt. It’s great for a few warm up shots while I’m in the stand!
  5. Finally back in my home stand...no rain but the wind is blowing backwards! My stand overlooks part of my 3D foam course...do you think my zombi deer is helping or hurting...debating with myself if I should move it...or find a head for it...(horns or no horns)...thoughts?
  6. Wet snow near Cranberry Lake...the blind I built in yesterday’s rain is holding up...so far...
  7. Thanks! Hoping to have inside loins for lunch instead of tree rat! Also need to get a deer heart for my daughters health class...pressure is on!
  8. Out for a morning hunt in 9F...looking for a “city deer” as my friends in 5A call them. Probably taste better than a “mountain deer” as my “city deer” have a nice exotic diet from everyone’s flowerbeds! Good luck!
  9. Made it out for the first hunt of the season...my woods are feeling pretty sterile with no acorns this year. ...but one never know, maybe I’ll get lucky today (the Bills got lucky today)!
  10. Just heard back from my English friends (president and tresurer of CAG - Carp Anglers Group)...here is what they said: "According to the USGS there have a been a few occasional reports of tench in the St Larry over the past decade. While they are not native they are considered exotic rather than invasive. They are very unlikely to be of any real concern to the balance of the St Larry environment. A great sport fish in Europe! Cheers, Iain" and... "This is actually very nice to see. Tench are very rare in the US (while somewhat common in Europe), and it's a cool looking fish. I remember catching a big one when I was a kid in France, this was quite something. Iain knows this better than me, but I don't believe they reproduce very fast, so no worry about 'invasiveness'... On the contrary, Dino and his colleagues should celebrate the diversity of the St Lawrence... ;-) Jerome"
  11. From the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences "A globally invasive fish, Eurasian tench (Tinca tinca) is spreading through the St. Lawrence River and poses an imminent invasion threat to the Great Lakes. Following its illegal release into a tributary of the St. Lawrence River in 1991, tench has spread throughout the river’s main stem over the past decade, and its abundance in commercial fishing bycatch in the river has grown exponentially. The tench is a generalist benthic consumer with largely undocumented ecological impacts in North America. Reports from other invaded regions indicate that it can compete with other benthic fishes, host a diverse assemblage of parasites and pathogens, degrade water clarity in shallow lakes, limit submerged macrophyte growth, reduce gastropod populations, and promote benthic algal growth through top-down effects. Risk assessments and climate-match models indicate that the Great Lakes are vulnerable to tench invasion, and they signal the need for timely comprehensive actions, including development and implementation of monitoring and rapid-response protocols, including prevention or slowing of natural dispersal through canals."
  12. I'm a professional geologist/senior project manager out of Buffalo and work with USACE/USEPA overseeing very large Superfund remedial activities in the Niagara Falls area, and over the last 19 years, in Northern New York on the St. Lawrence River, Grasse River, and Raquette River. I monitor annual resident fish sampling programs which are performed to track the distribution and concentrations of PCBs in fish (full and fillet) on the St. Lawrence River; this year two Eurasian Tench were caught. Curious to hear if anyone is aware of this invasive fish and if anyone has been tracking this potential invasion. Attached is one of the two fish caught yesterday at the New York State/St. Regis Mohawk Tribe border (just down stream of the Massena-Cornwall International Bridge). Eurasian Tench – 39.4 cm total length, 996 g total weight Eurasian Tench – 40.1 cm total length, 912 g total weight
  13. Thank you very much! Odered one this morning. ...hopefully it arrives in time!
  14. Thanks for reading! I'm planning to take my son out for the youth early deer season this weekend. He used my 12 gauge Remington 870 Express with wood stock last year to harvest his first deer...the shotgun had a limb saver on it (the one that slips over the end of the stock)...we lost it tracking his deer. I'm out of town this week and want to order a new one (the gun is in my safe at home)...could someone with the same gun, please measure the end of their stock for me so I can be sure to order the correct size..below are the size options from the Cabelas site? Thanks, Dino [email protected] Available: Small/Medium: 1/2" LOP 4-5/8"X1-9/16 up to 5-1/8" x 1-3/4" Small: 1" LOP 4-1/2" x 1-1/2" up to 4-3/16" x 1-5/8" Medium: 1" LOP 4-13/16" x 1-5/8" up to 5-1/8" x 1-3/4" Large: 1" LOP 5-1/8" x 1-3/4" up to 5-3/8" x 1-7/8"
  15. Thanks all! I had a great day...I spent the day with my family running the free “mineral kits for kids” booth at the 50th annual St Lawrence Rock and Mineral Show. Over the past year, I have collected over 60 different rocks, minerals, and fossils...we had over 300 kids attend...that is 300 aspiring future Geologists!
  16. Hi! Turkey Feathers directed me to your post. I have spent the last 19 years in a camp on an island a few miles downriver from Waddington. I work in this area during the summers as a geologist with EPA remediating the contaminated sediments in the river systems. My forte is fly fishing for bass and toothy critters on the adjacent rivers but I think I can help you with information on fishing for St Lawrence River bass as well as directing you to lodging. Please PM me or ask Turkey Feathers to send you my cell. Take care, Dino
  17. Good luck Jay! Stuck behind my desk today. Looking forward to making an arrow with your turkey wing feathers for you to hang next to your new bow!!
  18. I'll be taking my dream trip this summer...my son and I are going to the South Fork of the Snake River on a camping/fly fishing trip. He is now old enough, and has the fly fishing skills, to get lots out of the trip! I have fished the river a couple times in the past...it's extra special this time around because I get to share the experience with my son! This was his X-mas present this year! My only fear is that he drops out of school to become a trout bum! Next up on my dream trip list is a selfbow hunt in Alaska for a moose...Jay Massey's books were my spark and inspiration for this adventure! ...followed by a trip to Greenland to hunt for fluorescent minerals (my avatar is a combination of fluorescent minerals that are considered a "first-find"...I named it Amzinite it after my wife (Amy Marie Zack)...there are specimens on display in museums around the world! https://www.naturesrainbows.com/single-post/2016/06/04/Willemite-on-calcite-w-diopside-W-Pierrepont-NY
  19. Just finished this for TFs daughter... first deer...a day late.
  20. They are un-insulated. In the extreme cold, I wear my Filson wool pants under the bibs. And yes, very expensive but I have no problem paying extra for high quality knowing I'll get a lifetime of use! ...My wife and I bought Filson wool bibs as our wedding presents to each other :-)
  21. I want to be buried in these bibs...Filson double oil cloth...literally bullet proof!
  22. Made it out with my brother! Not much wind...very quiet out.
  23. Planning to head out with my Bro for a couple hours after work. He will be using his inline and I will be using my flintlock. Like always this time of year, there are more deer tracks in my front yard then behind my house in the woods! There deer sure do like my ornamental crabapple tree fruit...guessing they sweeten up a bit after some cold weather...planted a dozen or so "scratch and dent" crabapple trees last spring out back in an effort to continually naturalize my woods (old farm land 20 years ago). Good luck and stay warm! Dino
