  1. I am lucky that right here around the house their are many corn/alfalfa fields... The local deer have larger racks, than the deer that I have killed in the S Colton/ Parishville area. 219# 4 point is an old brute!
  2. Cannot wait to get back in my boat already..
  3. Lol.. Shoot him.. Must be deer season somewhere?
  4. Sorry Grow, has to be a smart@## in every group.. You are right on the beautiful part though , not a cloud in sight..
  5. I have to pick up my 11 year old daughter from school in 1/2 hour.. Maybe we will go squirrel hunting?( dam, I had a hard time spelling squirrel close enough for spell check to work)...lol JK.. Way too cold..
  6. Fairly certain most of my 100-120" deer averaged 2.5 years old. Based on teeth and weight .. I would think that a large % of 2.5 year old NY bucks have 100" of antlers.. I am not an expert or biologist though. jmo
  7. I wish we had as large a % of wild game eaters in the US ... 2nd article rang true with me.........And then I read the long comment by Phil and he has excellent points as well..
  8. Not too far away . My family is from the Falls Village/Salisbury area. Worked out of Canaan. Ever hunt On Robbins swamp or Norfolk mt? There is a bunch of small public bowhunting only areas around ( mostly flood control spots , dikes/dams,etc..) May try them if my private spots are being hunted.
  9. Gotcha. Hopefully I will make it back this year and see if there is still very little pressure in my area.
  10. Part of the beauty of this country . We are allowed to be idiots as long as it is within the confines of our laws. Ever spend much time with the Amish? they aren't any nicer to their women and children.
  11. Exactly what we thought,1/2 way through.
  12. That is fantastic! It has been a few years. My brother and I did the trip from Lows lake , portage across to the headwaters of the Oswegatchie, and then down to Cranberry lake . Trip was awesome,3.5 mile portage , not so much..lol...You are truly in the wilderness when you get out there. I have always wanted to go back and do just what you did, but haven't yet. Bass fishing on Lows lake was great. You could catch brookies as fast as you could throw your worm back in the water on the upper stretch of the Oswegatchie.
  13. I figured that is what you had in mind. Had to check... 7-08 and 270 are excellent choices...
  14. I have a 300 win mag. pro hunter barrel?
  15. Are you talking about CT? I lived there for a couple years(NW corner) ~ 24 years ago and there were deer everywhere. Couldn't keep them out of the garden with a stick .lol. I didn't deer hunt at the time so I didn't pay any attention to bucks , but they were around. Practically 0 hunting pressure, due to most of the population being many up of ritzy city people living the "country life" . Still have family in the area , and was thinking of giving it a try. Esp. If I am going to be limited to 1 buck!
  16. Hell, how many hunters kill two 2.5 or older bucks in a year?? For that matter what is the % that kill two 1 1/2? One buck rule is pure jealousy...Statistically close to 0 actual impact on buck #s. Imho
  17. Oh, I do... today was not the norm for me(shooting the spike) .He happened to walk out, and I already had decided that I would like to shoot a deer off of the land I have been paying taxes on for 20 years...Not greedy, I have probably passed on at least 50 young bucks over the years on this property.. Normally I shoot a decent buck and wait for a large 8 or bigger before pulling the trigger on a 2nd. So 9 out of 10 years I get 1 buck. and I am lucky and get to spend a fair amount of time in the woods.
  18. I like everything you stated, except the one buck part. ha.. I honestly think that if we left the 2 buck system the way it is now and did the other things you mentioned we would see a much improved buck population. I bet much less than 10% of the hunters take 2 bucks anyway...... Also do away with all nuisance and destroy permit tags... If you have a deer problem then you need better or more hunters on your property!
  19. Picture doesn't do him justice . He is a big 1 1/2 year old north country deer.. 135#s all day.. the bucks don't have to go far here in farm country to find good feed and all the does they can chase with very little competition.. the buck to doe ratio is terrible.. And now I joined in ....Lol.... It is fun to shoot deer regardless, though....[emoji3]
  20. Well..... I just shot a spike..he looked tasty! I happen to be sitting on my own/family property that I've hunted my whole life... I have never shot a buck on it.. I have seen and passed untold #s of 1 1/2 year old bucks over the years. Meanwhile my family and all the neighbors shoot piles of them... So I decided , what the neck, if I cannot beat them I might as well join them... I was really lucky.. he stepped out at 20 yds ...and click! Dam ! I forgot to put primer back in.. I managed to sloooowly get one out of my pocket and into my gun while he is looking everywhere but up..( good thing I wasn't on the ground)bam!! One shot in his neck...and there he is, the brown spot next to true trail in the pic.
  21. Last day of my season. 'ML sitting on my lap and waiting for a deer. nice calm, balmy 30°. 2 grouse so far..they are pretty tasty, maybe I should change tactics/ targets..
