  1. Some recent trailcam pics..
  2. At least you have a chance to go out and look... work always seems to get inthe way for me ... well maybe tommorow will yield a find!!!
  3. erussel , glad you take the time to look into the truth of things! many out there do not or yet believe what they see/hear inthe media!!
  4. I have respect to those who think that a bow should be hand drawn and released! i just don't think this is a battle you can win! maybe at best i can see a primative bow season or even a primitive muzzleloder season. Fact is hunters are on a decrease and anything that promotes hunting i stand in favor for! Maybe a comprmise is in order here???? A seperate crossbow season??? either before or after or during the early season? I can see the beneifit of a primitive season but do compounds qualify?? they hold a portion if not most of the drawweight? I personally do not have a problem having x-bows as part of if not all of the bow season ... many will not agree... fact is they are no more accurate or easy to use as a compound bow.. even with the ability to draw before game is seen.(how many 80% + let off bows are available out there?) i , know there are many of you that think practice is important BUT REALISTICALLY AFTER YOU SIGHT IN DOES IT TAKE MUCH PRACTICE TO BECOME PROFIICIENT?? for those of you that shoot recurves or longbow and are complaining i feel your struggle (maybe you should get a primitive season during the rut!)! compounds are another issue! the traditionionalists lost to you in the late seventies! are you deserving of your own season imo yes!! To try and seperate compunds and x-bow is childish!! imo... they are eessentially the same so unless you are a traditional bow shooter(fingers with recurve or long bow) you are fighing a losing battle that your forefathers fought to keep compound out of bow season!! Arrowflinger and others no offence but you may win the battle but not the war!!! i respect you for what opu belive in but it is coming like a titlewave and i fear for your survival......
  5. I really hope every hunter evolves to think the way you do! fact is a lot won't or never will... I still feel its a personal decision and do not want ar's given by the state! i grew up shooting small bucks and although i am personally ready for the next step i choose as a landowner to let my friends and all others evolve at their own pace, only rule i have is don't compline if i shoot something bigger! qdm maybe given a bad rap by some but i understand the true version of it!! pat i acknowledge thaT FOOD PLOTSARE A FORM OF BAITING, in the broadest sence of the word, but leaving a pile in nys ia of now is illegal and i wish you the best of luck in making it legal! i use to feed up to 3 tons of corn after the season ended but have adapted to planting up to 10-acres of corn or 1 ton per acre to help the deer thru the winter! i see your point but as of now it is illegal.. for those of you that think he is a crack pot ...at least he has the honor of standing by his convictions!! i respect you for that! i'll end this by saying no one is right or wrong everyone is intitled to their own opinion but if it legal by law or it not that it what you need to change or be know as an outalaw!!
  6. looks kind of photoshopped for me.....
  7. they seem to like to pose for the camera? i know what you mean though tough to replace a good cam like a cuddieback! the ir flash doesn't work for me but i got the cams for 40$ as a last years model at a gunshow. i really wish they would institute a spring season for bear!!
  8. I would tend to agree with ny-antler. Although there are large high fenced ranches in texas it is a huge state! and i am sure most are 3 strand barbwire if fenced at all. You only see/ hear about the high fenced ones do to our highly touted hunting shows!! But as the synopisis says QDM on its own site stresses the ballanced age structure, harvesting enough does, restraint in harvesting youngbucks(notice restraint not NO!),adhearance to tresspass and wildlife laws,Improving habitat, and general health of a herd, resulting in a better hunter and hunting experiance. The Media/general hunting population has taken part of what they consider an overall plan and turned it into a trophy management plan. (not to offend anyone) But the best example of this is the word GAY it ment happy... and we all know what it means today!! If true QDM principals are to exist and be moved forward i think they will need a name change, as i do not feel any amount of education will sway the average hunter from thinking QDM is not trophy management!! J.M.O. as you are entitled to your own.

    Leeks!

Anyone out there digging leeks? Any good recipies?
  10. Actually pat i keep all my small racks and put them on placks in my trophy room (see all the little guys left of the squirrell?) and there are a lot more of them than big ones, ever deer i shoot is a consience decision on my part and all deserve my respect as the all hold good memories for me. However I do know a lot of hunters with baskets of little racks feeding mice in barns and garages...
  11. The benifit of a 3 1/2 or older buck in the herd is this, it will create a more intense rut, larger rubs, scrapes, ect. I truly believe there is a trophy buck in every one's hunting area. the question is are you willing to pass all the others in hope it walks by and give you a shot? Most hunters i know do not, which is their choice. I have shot enough sm. bucks and will shoot does to get my meat, the chioce is mine to wait for a large buck and i do not force it upon others, all i ask is don't get upset, call me names, ect when i do take a big buck. I worked for it!
  12. Steve, The value of letting the little ones walk is this: You get to experiance nature and hopefully learn something from every encounter. Learning habits, food preferences, and a general knowledge of your game will make you a better hunter! Maybe then you will then want to hunt a more mature animal and maybe eat tag soup, but you will learn and evolve as person understanding nature, not just using it or conforming it to your will. And best of all you get to hunt another day!!!
  13. Yep lots of people like that out there, sad really. At least you realize the value of asking, i have gotten permission from knocking on doors on land that was posted. the worse they can do is say no... Unfortunately most people doing qdm in ny who may of started trying to help the whole herd do not realize how far a mature buck will travel. they lose interest as they aren't seeing the quick improvement they see on tv. Most properties here in ny are to small to be managed effectivly. I remember seeing an article on managing small property it refered to a small property as 320 acres!! Most camps around me are 40 acres or less. This all creates ill feelings and as they might only see a sm buck they will shoot it.. So now ar's are being pushed as the cure all for everyone with small properties. Only problem with that is if i own the property and pay the taxes and buy my licence i want to shoot a deer! So now qdm gets the bad rap as the root cause of ar's. I am all for a ballanced age structure but i do not see the general population looking at that, they want the "tv land" experiance big bucks walking by all the time.. Ever get a chance ask on of the hunting tv celebs how long the hunted for to make a 30 min show?? Fact is you don't need a mature buck to breed, 1 1/2 year olds will do as will some button bucks.
  14. Scott, if it makes sense nys will not do it never has never will, or it will take some monumental study costing thousands of tax payers $ before 20 years go by and maybe then it will be put in place hap hazzard due to budjet cuts..
  15. Same argument that traditionalists used to fight of the scourge of the compound(which holds some of the weight mechanicaly).. guess what they lost... Its coming whether you want it to or not... It will come down to this secanario though.. Hunter is all excited he can use a xbow goes out and buys one can't get within 50 yards of a deer usuing tradational gun hunting techniques, gives up xbox goes for sale.. Old worn out archer who feels bad he can't draw back his favorite bow decideds he rather be out hunting than not buys used x-bow and hunt for 10 more years, leaving his x-bow to his grandchild now 8 who so idolized his grandparent decides to take it out hunting at 12, gets proficient with it and decides he is going to try his grandparents old hand drawn bow. Learns to love it and uses both to teach his/her childern to hunt with both passing on a tradition for many years to come.
  16. Saw them a few times during archery always together(can't shoot a bear in a group) maybe this year they will screw up and show up alone!
  17. I don't think is just people who practice qdm thinking that all the deer belong to them, almost all landowners do most "posted signs" are there to protect their game. I i truly believe most hunters believe they are entitled to a buck if not a buck and a doe.. The days of putting in time and actually HUNTING are gone. The cost of tags is high and that leads to people feeing i paid for it so i'm entitled to a deer. Along with society in general feeling they are entitled to everything instead of earning it. This is a driving force behind a lot of trophy management the right to get a big buck. If they were common would they be special?? I'd rather get a once in a lifetime deer than get a booner every year... because a big buck is special thats why they are mounted, if i got one every year the racks would end up in the trash or in a basket in the garage..
  18. I try to do my own management plan within the dec's. their areas are to large to manage effectively. We take a minimum of 10 doe a year just to keep the numbers at a decent level on our property, we try to take 5 buck and usually do. The state raises and lowers doe tags every year but i haven't seen a decrease in number of deer seen/taken off our property and the surrounding properties. I wish they would put mandatory deer checks in place maybe they would have a better idea of the number of deer in a dmu and decrease the size to better handle the numbers better.
  19. 500' from a building unless you own it or have permission of the owner, check you local ordanence on discharge of firearms within your town.
  20. These two little guys have taken up residence in the area since last fall(i believe momma kicked them out)2 year olds from what i can tell. they decided to pester and tick me off , destroying my 3-d archery targets(2 deer and a turkey), a block target, 3 tree stands last fall, not to mention about an acre of corn i leave stand for the deer. figured they denned up under a neighbors trailer that hasen't been used in 2 years now(tracks went under but not out last dec) thought i put up a few cameras around the house figuring they would be back. Guess its time to take down the bird feeders...
  21. you might of been beaten to the hay field by someone else.. Look where you saw deer in january and feb. then check the closest bedding area. i still have some bucks here with horn on their heads...
  22. I can imagine you doing that eddie!! lol
  23. 1st bear of spring...guess its time they wake up...
