Calling for rain this weekend which means more flooding... deer herd had to suffer this winter lots of deep snow, ice layers hard to get to food, neighbor was having logging done, deer just stood waiting for the trees to fall to get at those tender tops. They would only move 50-60 ards away while the loggers were working as as soon as they would leave to take the logs out,the deer would rush to the tops only to repeat when the skidder came back.. I fully expect a drop in antler size this year based on similar years. Even though they made it through they won't have the nessary nutients is excess to start horn growth and will need to replenish their bodys first, doe might of lost a fawn or two as well....

Ever hear a fox make this noise in the woods before ???
G-Man replied to C_Carr316's topic in General Hunting
Yes i have heard fox do that i have also heard them yelp/putt like a boss hen turkey, they are hunters we use calls they will too especially if their prey comes in to it or they hear it and then see or get prey, its learned from what i can tell. -
I remember reading that study I believe that they even had orange streamers on the deer's ears....I always say you see 20 in a field how many more are still in the woods.....

Anyone ever try Plotsaver?
G-Man replied to meatmuzzy's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I have a friend who has used it with success a bit pricy for me. with a plot that small it will be grazed unless you do something.. i gave up trying to save mine and plant bigger and more plots and will not plant soybeans or sunflowers due to the deer eating them all before they get a chance to grow(in a 3 acre plot) got 3 sunflowers one year ate all the heads off.. course deer food is what i had planted them for..... -

G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Worse part is if they do this they won't even use the prision system to make the plates.... probably probably buy them from China!!! ;D -
Thats a bummer looks like someone tried to shoot him in the throat patch...too bad. Hoping for a melt down this weekend, have a 7 acre corn field to go thru where the trails look like century old goat paths entering and exiting it, just need to melt the 2 ft of snow out to make it a bit easier to find em'

I tell this to the guys that have camps around me when they say all the deer are goneor are are on your place.. "Look all year its quiet out here a week or two before the season, all i hear are your atv's, hammering, smell woodsmoke, and hear shooting. The deer hear and smell this as well, i place my stands in july and stay out of the woods till opening day! Thus my place is still quiet, yes i put out cameras but they are in open areas that are usually traveled by me on a consistant basis." I let one neighbor hunt a stand that looked toward his property the day before opening morning and opening morning he saw 67 deer before noon both days! all leaving his area where there are several small properties with multiple hunters, checking stands, and entering to hunt, all were headed for my sanctuary area. He got his buck and a lesson as well, deer live in their area year round they know what belongs and doesn't put pressure on them and they will leave and find a place that doesn't.

Snowshoes? Do You Use Them?
G-Man replied to Mr VJP's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I actually made a pair of bear paws, steamed and bent the frame and wove the wet rawhide..i'll have to dig around for the pictures and scan them in..its been awhile since i had to do that really not that hard of a project but time consuming. A lot faster to buy em' -
This is why peope started posting their properties in the late 70's and eighty's. Most landowners are not deer natzi's they just want to know who is on their property. Gates left open, trash left around, unsporting hunters leaving game, taking errant shots, arguing with the owner(s). this is the largest complaint about hunting ACCESS TO LAND it started with the its not posted so i can hunt... guess what now its posted! A little work to find out the owner and ask would of gone a long way back then..and we're paying for it now. and will continue to do so as long as the attitude of its not posted we can hunt still persists(even if it legal to do so). I've never seen unposted land remain that way as all it takes is one person to tic off the owner and its gone(maybe forever) . Maybe the owner would allow hunting anyother time, but that the one day he/she was goint to take out a child for the first time, but they run into well its not posted(hunters)... so guess what now its posted.

Warmest Hunting Boots ?
G-Man replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Well having fallen in catt creek over 20years ago and freezing my feet(not frost bite frozen!) i have tried every thing fromm 2000 gram thinsulate to felts with wool sock and electric socks. I found an answer this year using toasty toes with a good pair of insulated boots i used several different brands rocky, lecross, muck . I believe it cost me 10$ for 14 pair of toe warmers which lasted me 7 days. I use to have a pair of micky mouse boots and they did work but the extra weigh was really tireing. I now can sit for hours or walk with out a problem. -
Snowshoes? Do You Use Them?
G-Man replied to Mr VJP's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I am a believer i the old style ash with rawhide, i've used the new tubbs and was surprised at how loud aluminum is when walking in icy conditions or bumped on brush, the ash is quieter. Get a pair style that will do what u want longer shoes are great for walking across large open areas or sticking to trail.(michigan type) large oval are good for carrying extra weight in brush and timber(bear paw or modified bear paw(upturned toe)) A good cross between the two is a green mountain i use these for hunting. Again as stated above get the size that meets/ exceeds your weight. you will still sink a bit. its not hard just like walking if you spred you legs you will tire fast and feel it in the morning. The wood and rawhide take a little more maint(shalacking in th espring to stay waterproof. The most important thing is the binding! get one that fits securely and will not loosen, they even have some that have ice teeth on the bottom if your climbing or following trails down slopes. I killed my best buck off of snowshoes in 5 ft of snow when eveyone else decided to stay in. A 24"inside spread 8pt that was 8 1/2 years old with 27in main beams, grossing in the mid 140's. The new snowshoes are nice but like i said i found them to be a little noisy(unnaturally sound aluminum makes) i do have a modern pair but they are reserved for just taking a walk in the winter. -
The problem with the long colt is the same with many old cartrages..factory loads are week you would need to hand load it and then maybe 100 yards max. I know the recommended 1000 ft lbs woulnt be there but 500 ft lbs would kill a deer dead although not leave an exit. Pygmy yes my friends 44 is a magnum it takes a compressed load to shoot and kill at 100 yards and I would expect about the same with a good handload for 45 long colt. But with other better rounds available I. Would look for something with a bit more punch.
-
I can't say for sure on a long colt, but I friend of mine shoots a 44 cal carbine for deer with handloads 125yards is about it... I would assume about the same for the long colt maybe a little more if handloaded.

I agree with fasteddie a good cut on contact is the way to go.. i use a steelforce 100 grain head flies like a field point and is devastating not to resharpenable!!

Nice! thanks for posting! -
I would get her into a 100 grain head. as you up grade so will she eventually. The extra weight will help her accuracy as well.

send letters for crossbows in NY
G-Man replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Wow growalot you have a bit of a problem there... i would get a dec or local or state officer to hunt there and get some arrests/fines imposed.. Had a few problems with tresspassers when i first bought my place in 93-95 a few warnings given plus a few reward signs posted seems to have solved the problem. Of course the reward signs are for the conviction of anyone poaching turkeys(free from my local chapter of the nwtf) but no one ever reads the fine print.. the large reward for information on poachers is all they can read from 10 feet away and that seems to work Wish you the best of luck with your struggle!! -
I've met you once or twice through the nwtf, yeah kurt was excited. i"ve know al for quite a few years...want a good laugh ask him about his muzzleloading season this past year!
-
I know a kurt larson from wny (member of safarri club) took a bird that is in the top 10 eastern (mulitble beard) last spring...was the talk of our chapter of nwtf..I believe it was scored by al gai(state nwtf board member)
-
I've noticed that the deep snow seems to have trimmed the beards back a bit 9 in instead of 10-12 for the size of the toms spurs i can see on my trailcam pics...
-
As for turkeys I hve both and found them to scare equally well stopped using them about 3 years ago
-
Have and old delta foam decoy and bought a bobble head decoy a few years ago, they both seem to scare the birds equally.... ;D
