Anyone Going After Woodchucks Soon?
wildcat junkie replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
The 5mm CF conversion uses 6.8gr of Alliant 2400. It costs me 15¢ to pull the trigger. Twice the Me of the 17HMR. Same energy @ 185 yds as the 17HMR @ the muzzle.I did the Schroeder CF conversion before the 5mm RF Magnum ammo become available again & I'm not a bit sorry I did it. I looking to get a mold made for hard alloy 40gr lead bullets @ 2100fos for edible small game like Grey Squirrels. I bought the gun new about 1972. -

After I get my garden planted I will be thinning the herd along the river bank next to the garden. There's quite a colony there. I killed 4 or 5 last year with my 5mm Remington magnum center fire conversion. .204 33gr V-Max bullets traveling at 2450fps makes for an effective 200yd Woodchuck rig for use around settled areas. It's not a whole lot louder than a 22lr HV & it makes a nice smacking sound when it hits 'em! Terminal performance in barn pigeon @ 35yds 33gr V-Max on the left 100yds 200yds -
I've taken 3 since 2004 on my own property. About once every 5 years, '04, '09 & '14. Never even saw anything like that (while hunting) in PA & only one in Indiana. Most of those Midwestern "trophy states" fair no better on public land or easily accessible private land. I'm very happy with NY deer hunting.

How About an Official 2015 Gardening Thread?y
wildcat junkie replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
I had good luck getting them to grow last year, but weeds took over really bad. I'm going to use black visqeen pre-drilled on the roll for water drainage to mulch.I burry a shovel full of rooted horse manure under each hill & mix it in with soil. Once the vines get established & the roots get into the manure they really take off. Well drained sandy soil helps too. Melons don't transplant well so I'm going to start individual seeds in Jiffy 7 pellets, then transplant 3 plants into 5" peat pots as soon as they have 4 true leaves. That will give me a whole hill of plants in one pot. -

I'm not sure what the actual temperature is but the thick bath towel over the wire rack of the shelf is nice & warm to the touch. I can hear the bimetal strip kicking the heater off & on. I'm using the heat to germinate. after the seeds germinate, I can "harden off" the plants to sunlight on the kitchen table as there is an East facing sliding door next to it. Be careful using fluorescent lights as you will have to gradually get the plants used to sunlight or they will fry the 1st time they get a good dose of direct sunlight. I have a South facing closed in porch off the kitchen W/a propane heater. Over e next few days I'm going to get some 8" cinder blocks W/some plywood set up to raise the rack to window sill level. The propane heat along with the electric heater underneath should keep the plants happy until it warms up enough so I can move them into my 6' x 6' collapsible greenhouse. http://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server2900/7a5b1/products/32/images/218/SpringHousewhite_background__56277.1405352240.1280.1280.JPG?c=2 -

I'll sell what I don't use at the local Weight Watchers meetings. I only set about 12 plants in the garden. 2 will be Cherry tomatoes. I'm trying the Steakhouse tomatoes for the 1st time so I'll only set 2 plants. That leaves room for 4 of the Whoppers & 4 of the Beefmasters. I usually keep 1 plant of each variety to replace any that don't take to the transplanting well.I just planted what the seed envelopes contained, a few of the pellets got 2 seeds to make things come out right. I pretty much filled three 11" x 21" trays. In a few weeks, I'll start some cantaloupe & watermelon. I'm going to get 5" round peat pots to transplant 3 Jiffy 7 plants in each so I can plant one 5" pot in each hill. That should reduce any shock. I'll also plant some seeds direct around the last week of May to have a longer harvest. -
I'll kick it off. I just finished planting 200 "Jiffy 7" peat pellets. 45 with Sun King Broccolli 25 with Early Jalapeño hybrid peppers 20 with California Wonder green bell peppers 15 with Big Bertha green bell peppers 15 with Karma red bell peppers 20 with Nikita orange bell peppers 15 with Park's Wopper tomato 15 with Beefmaster tomato 15 with Steakhiuse tomato 15 with Supersweet 100 hybrid Cherry tomatoes I have them in covered trays sitting on a wire rack civered with a beach towel over a small electric heater. It took me most of the day from hydrating the pellets, planting the seed, to setting up the heated rack.

If you could only have one "firearm" a shotgun would be he logical choice. For me, that would be a 12ga (3") Ithaca M37 W/ a 28" vent rib barrel & a 24" smooth bore slug barrel.

Locator Calls for St Lawrence Valley Turkeys
wildcat junkie replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Turkey Hunting
Yeah I've called in singles & even pairs of Barred Owls in the past. I inadvertently had them help control my neighbors "free range" chickens at my home once. The owl hootter was my standby in Indiana, I just haven't employed it here & was wondering if it would work as well as it did for me there.Sounds like a plan. Maybe I'll even dabble W/a coyote howler. -

Yeah, I have a can type owl hooter. That's my favorite. I only use a crow call during the day. A coyote call sounds interesting for evening, but I would think it would send the birds the other way when they fly down in the AM. -
Since we've found Morels everywhere from near the Ohio River in Indiana to just a few miles from the Canadian border here in NE New York state, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to find them near Buffalo. I would expect that some time during the 1sy half of May would be a good time to start looking.

I'm going to try a new tack hunting turkeys on my property this year. In years past I just set up in my meadow & called blind. This year I want to try roosting a Tom, then relocating it in the pre-dawn to set up a calling location. I'm hoping to intice a bird to fly down near my set-up location. In Southern Indiana, a Barred Owl sequence was very effective to get a gobble at dusk & again in the dark pre-dawn. Will it be effective here? I haven't heard any Barred Owl calls in my area. What are effective shock gobble calls at dusk & pre-dawn this far North?

Build one. I've done 7 myself. Start out W/a simple halfstock Ohio Valley or Plains rifle. Except for breaching the barrel, routing out the barrel channel & drilling the ramrod hole, it can all be accomplished W/hand tools. The barrel channel COULD be done W/chisels, but it's much easier to have it done. Also, dovetails are easier if you have them done on a mill. Their used to be a Pharmacist in Franklin, IN that would allow us to use his shop on Wednesday nights. He would sell us stock blanks, barrels, locks, etc. he would rout the barrel channel, breech the barrel, cut the dovetails & then drill the ramrod hole when the thimbles & entry pipe were installed. You basically build the rifle "in the block" to allow drilling holes square to the centerlines. After everything is inletted & installed, the final shape is roughed out & finalized.
-
If he made them at a profit, you probably couldn't afford them. Even for a plain Jane half stock there's probabky over 60 hours work in a rifle.
-
Well water should average about 56°F, so your shower will only be about 100°F @ maximum flow.
-
Did you build these rifles yourself? I have a .36 iron mounted Tennessee Mountain rifle that I used to hunt squirrels with when I lived in Southen Indiana. For years, all I hunted with were muzzle loaders including a pair of Davide Pedersoli 12ga dbl barrels.

I cited slow recovery as well as output. Tank type electric heaters have slow recovery and on-demand electric heaters will have slow output unless they are using huge amounts of electricity.Flame type on demand heaters, either propane or oil fired are much more effecient at heat transfer. OP needs to check GPM output & energy consumption to compare the cost vs benefit.
-
Any electric water heater (tank or tankless) is going to either have slow recovery/output or use a lot of power. The one you are considering will suck over 10000 watts. If you will have have propane or fuel oil for cooking/heat, I would suggest that you get an on-demand propane or oil fired water heater. They are much more efficient than electric.

I bought a collapsible greenhouse a few years back. http://www.flowerhouses.com/6-x-6-x-6-5-springhouse/I plan to make use of it this spring after I get my plants started on my enclosed, South facing porch.

If I start my tomatos & peppers in the next few days, I can hold off transplanting them until Memorial Day if needed

From the guy that berates me for making political posts on this thread; Mr VJP "Political post #1 through #10 Start a new thread in the politics section and we can debate until the end of time for all I care. How ironic that you, after making numerous "political" posts on this very thread, should call me out for merely responding to your posts. This is typical of your right wing hypocrisy & your response calling me out for the very thing that you have practiced is all too common.

That is a muzzle loader! I built my .54 W/1 in 70" barrels. The hotter I load them, the tighter they group. I shoot 100gr of fffg in the cap gun, 120gr fffg in the stoner.

Up here on the tundra we also have 2 seasons. White flies & black flies.

You do realize that the Eastern United States is one of the few areas that is experiencing "global cooling" right? They had to move the Iditerod race farther North this year because there wasn't enough snow in Anchorage.
