It's the quick access to remote areas that appeals to me. Like you said push up steep hills. In 2010 I had ridden 3850 miles by September so I could pedal up some fairly steep grades W/O shifting into really low gears. I have also rolled up really close to game including whitetails & black bears. It's not like you could ride up to them & shoot, but you can get into areas W/minimal impact as far as spooking game. It works well in rolling hills if you are in shape & the bike is set up properly..

OK, lets have some nominations for the best movie featuring a wide variety of historically correct guns that is not a war movie. Post PIX from the movie that show a reasonably clear picture of the gun/guns that can be used to identify. I'll make the 1st nomination. Death Hunt (1981) The 1st time I saw this movie, my eye was drawn the the fore-end of the rifle that Albert Johnson (Charles Bronson) was holding. I thought that it looked an awful lot like that of an early vintage Savage M99 & sure enough, I soon got a good enough look at it to verify that is was indeed a Savage M99. Well that got me interested as that was the 1st time I ever saw a Model 99 Savage in a movie. The next weapon that caught my eye was being used by Sgt Edgar Millen. (Lee Marvin) I was really excited now, Lee was shooting an 1898 Krag Jorgenson 30/40. My dad had one of those & I now am restoring it to the sporterized condition it was in when he bought it in 1958. It appears to be a 22" barrel Carbine judging by the original military front sight. The ones cut down to 22" that the CMP/NRA sold in the late '20s had banded front sights. As soon as I saw the side box magazine I knew it was a Krag. Now, I was really paying attention. The next weapon I identified was the sporterized SMLE (Lee Enfield) that Sundog/George Washington Lincoln Brown (Carl Weathers) was shooting. This picture doesn't show the gun very well, but if you are familiar W/the rear bolt locking system of the SMLE, it jumps right out at ya. I could not find any better pictures of the SMLE. In the picture above you can see the Winchester M1873 Winchester Rifle used by RCMP Constable Alvin Adams (Andrew Stevens) Another picture of the M1873 Winchester. There was also a M1873 Winchester Carbine carried by Ned Warren (William Sanderson) That pretty well does it for rifles. Now let's have a look at the Winchester M12 riot Gun being wielded by Sgt Edgar Millen. There was a double barrel shotgun & a sawed off single barrel that weren't identifiable as anything extraordinary. That brings us to handguns. Here we have a Colt New Service revolver held by RCMP Constable Alvin Adams. Finally, we see Albert Johnson in action with the Colt Peacemaker single action revolver. .

Feral Cats and Dogs: would you cull them?

Well, to be honest, while I liked the outcome, it was entirely an accidental culmination of events. You can rest assured that I have filed that away for future reference though. -

Speaking of raptors culling domestic animals. Years ago I got my brother-in-law (Daniel) interested in spring turkey hunting exposing him to pre dawn owl calling to locate gobblers on the roost. Since I had some small acreage in a semi rural area, the family cook-outs were usually held at my place. One evening things were winding down at a cook-out that was held for the visit of another brother-in-law from out of state. (Allan) Daniel said. Hey Dan show Allen all of your turkey calls. I got out my owl hooter & let out some barred owl calls. Who cooks for you, who cools for youallllll. After a few call sequences I got an answer, & then an answer from another barred owl. I soon had those 2 owls in the immediate vicinity calling & cackling at each other. For several evenings I played with those owls, usually getting at least one of them to come in. Now I'll back up a bit here. I had been having trouble with my neighbor letting his chickens run loose on my property. He raised fighting cocks & participated in chicken fighting. He kept his prize cocks caged but let the hens & peeps run amok. They would peck at the tomatoes in my garden, roost in my shrubbery & generally just were a PITA. After playing around calling in those barred owls for several days, I noticed a marked decrease in chicken activity as in no more chickens running around loose. NONE. -
I can see your point, but lets see that holds up for "politically correct" posts.

Here, I'll try it again. Looks like #3 must be from a RED state.

And how was my post name calling?

I think you meant house sparrows? Wrens are a very desirable song bird. I can remember making wren houses as a kid. By restricting the hole to the size of a quarter it would discourage sparrows & other birds from taking over. I have one that comes back every year to eat the bugs in my pole beans. Does a great job! -
The ice going out on the St Regis is the 1st sure sign of spring here. If we get heavy rains it breaks it free from the shore & it goes out en-mass. It sounds like distant thunder. Only got to witness it 1 time in the spring of '99. I often hear it at night though. Here are the conditions today. Still locked up but that's the 1st I've seen water/slush on top.

Back (in medieval times) when I was young, I remember someone of my Dad's generation telling me about the annual game report card that accompanied the PA hunting licenses in the past. It had a line seeking input on the number of feral cats eliminated. Just goes to show ya how times change yet some things (problems) remain the same. -

I said "miles", not mile. About 4 miles back & I was Bear hunting. What took me 30 minutes on the bike would have taken hours walking. The bicycle allowed me to explore a lot more territory than would have been practical on foot. Not like I was going to go put & shoot a bear on every outing. If I had shot a bear I would have had to have gotten a cart or assistance anyway, on foot or on a bike. On the bike I could have gotten assistance faster. (no cell coverage in that area) A horse would have been ideal. On the way in there were 2 short hills that required pushing the bike. On the way out I could peddle all the way.

I think Twerk-A-Jerk might be more accurate. Papist reminds me of Navin Johnson He brings to mind the scene where Navin's Daddy gives him a life lesson on the difference between S**t & Shinola .Immediately after the lesson, Navin proceeds to step right in s**t. Papist seems to have enormous talent for just that sort comedic behavior. -

The primary difference here is that being the recipient of a "slur" buy an individual is quite different that having a tax payer subsidized, nationally recognized, immensely popular organization like the NFL using one as a name for a team. I live just a few miles from the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation. I worked closely W/many native Americans in skilled trades. Maybe that's why my perspective may be a little more sympathetic towards how they might feel about this subject.. . -
I just came across this thread. I was thinking of starting my own bicycle hunting thread but since this one is already started I thought I would give it a bump, I was doing a lot of mountain bike riding in 2010. Even rode from Meachem (sp?) Lake to the access road just North of Loon Lake & back. Came across a BIG black bear in the trail on the side of Debar Mtn. Really exciting. I yelled a bear, a bear, a bear, to my wife who was following behind. I stated seeing bear scat on the bicycle trails so I decided to use the bike for hunting access. The way I looked at it, was that the access would be faster & since it was low percentage of success situation anyway, making several trips on a bicycle for access would still be "cost effective" as far as effort & definitely a time saver A few times I went miles back into the Hays Brook area going as far as the Sheep Meadows area. Here are some PX from my hunt. I camped in my 24' travel trailer at Mountain Pond for a week. This 1st one is taken @ the camp on Mountain Pond. This one was taken about 1/2 way back to sheep Meadows along the trail.

Before the monkeys jump on to criticize, I'll admit that tolerance for bigotry isn't my strong suit. -

I am a native born American descending from several generations of the same.. I was raised a Methodist & my religion is Christian but I have grown very weary of people using religion to justify hate. That has tended to make me lean towards Deism which acknowledges the assistance of God & Jesus but in my view, man's "religions" with all the hate & killing in the name of God seem ludicrous to me, regardless of what particular religion that is doing the killing. About 5 generations back, my descendants established a Methodist church in Western PA that was the nucleus of a small village that grew around it. I was raised to believe that tolerance & forgiveness was the way of Christ. -

I'll have to give it to ya, that was clever. I really mean that. I got a chuckle out of it. Much better than your usual drivel. I understand that you "conservatives" have problems with "theories". Evolution, gravity, etc. All that science can be confusing when it overwhelms the brain.. -

As was I unless you have a narrow minded "conservative" mindset. But then, that was thoroughly covered in POST#62 -

Again, your delusion is showing. How does "Would you want to be judged by the actions of Christian extremists?" constitute some sort of Christian bashing?
