First of all, I know I'm not employing the optimum combination, but it's all I have at the moment. I'm pressing my son's 20ga Ithaca M37 Ultralight into turkey hunting service. It has a Colonial .572" turkey choke screwed into the 24" vent rib barrel. I have a set of Williams "Slugger" sights mounted on the rib. This morning, I had a chance to pattern Federal Turkey loads with the "Flitecontrol" wad. With standard Federal 20ga 3" magnum upland loads of 1 1/4oz of copper plated #6 shot I was getting 75 pellet hits in a 10" circle @ 30yds. With the Federal Turkey loads pushing 1 5/16oz of copper plated #6 shot in the "Flitecontrol" wad, I averaged 127 pellets hits in a 10" circle @.30yds! That's almost a 70% improvement with only 5% more shot! I burned up 7 of my 10 shells fiddling with the sights. The 1185 fps Turkey loads impacted considerably higher @ 30yds compared to the upland loads. Now that I adjusted the sights, they are hitting just a hair high dead on @ 12yds, pretty well centered but still a smidge high @ 30yds. With a hold on the feather/skin line on the neck it will put the best of the pattern in the neck/ head. Averaging 4 hits in the brain/center of the neck vertebrae.

Because then you would have an unsightly dovetail or plug to contend with. At one time, Remington CF rifles had screw applied sights that only left holes to plug & even that was distasteful to me. I was pleased when manufacturers started to make rifles with clean barrels.Good mounts that hug the action as low as possible are very unlikely to get knocked awry. I only had that happen 1 time in nearly 60 years. I leaned my (unloaded) M700 CDL against a truck in my driveway as I was loading gear. We were just crossing the road to drive to the back side of one of my meadows across e road from my house. It slid off & landed on the objective bell striking hard frozen dirt. A zero check later that day confirmed that the POI had shifted. I never did that again.

Out of 59 peat pellets planted with tomato seeds, (the cat got one of my tomato pellets as well as one of the broccoli) I have 43 that spouted. 73% germination so far. The "Park's Whopper" seeds seem to be lagging behind the rest with only 5 of 15 sprouting. I took the flat off the heated rack this morning and sat it on the table next to the sliding glass doors to get some natural sunlight. Until I either get some more germination or determine that all that will sprout are up, I will return it to the heat at night. After some early success, the broccolli doesn't seem to be doing well. I also have a few California Wonder & Big Bertha peppers peaking through. -
I'm going to try the owl call just after dusk to locate birds on the roost.

Yep!

NOT in the house!I tried that once when I was a teenager. My Dad wasn't impressed when he and my Mom returned from shopping.

Is that a New York buck?

What is your favorite turkey choke tube?

Well, after some research, I found that my choke tube is for lead only. -

I wonder how those Fed HW-7s would do out if a .572" 20ga choke? That's .058" constriction in the Ithaca barrel. -
Rifled barrels show little or no improvement with foster slugs or other "weight forward" designs. They don't need spin to stabilize. Thet work just like a shuttlecock. Sabot prijectiles, on the other hand, need spin so they do poorly out of smooth bire barrels.

The solution is in the Democratic primary election. He is almost sure to win against a Republican in the general election. Especially someone like that sacrificial lamb sent to the slaughter last time. The damned Republican Party supported Cuomo & sent a stooge to run against him to assure his win. Of course, the Lemmings on the right can't see that.

I would have the same issue if I didn't put some electric fence around the garden.I use cedar posts at the corners, then, fiberglass poles about every 15' between. I use 2" wide tape 4' from the ground at he top, then 4 strands of poly wire between, all the way down to about 4" from the bottom to discourage rodents. I must keep the bottom trimmed with a weed eater every time I mow. The thin poly wire seem to catch the deer off guard & confuse them. I think they concentrate on the visable 2" tape at the top & get a surprise when they hit the poly wire. I haven't had any deer jump the top tape yet. <<<<knocking on wood>>>> -

Seeds are sprouting already! I had a few of the Sun King broccoli sprouting yesterday as well as Cherry tomotoes. Today I noticed some of the Beefmaster & Park's Whopper tomatoes peeking out. The only tomatoes not sprouting yet are the Steakhouse. The peppers should be about a week behind. It looks like the heater under the rack is working well to speed up sprouting. -
Let me refine that. "Oil finished wood stock" & rust blued steel"....Gives me goosebumps....... An 8x57 with full power European loads with 200gr bullets or "adult pressure" hand loads of the same flavor would suffice.

I think the idiot got it back. He worked with my father in law. He went to a lawyer to see about filing a lawsuit to cover his medical bills & $900 damage to his truck that resulted when I wrapped the driver's side door around his leg when he so foolishly opened the door & stepped out after the firearm was knocked from his grasp. The lawyer wouldn't take the case W/O a substantial retainer fee paid "up front". IMO, he should have had the weapon seized & his "unlimited carry" permit rescinded.

The KXL is a "tar sands" pipeline. It has nothing to do with gas or oil & would not benefit any of the people that live in the area, or the United States for that matter. At least not as far as long term jobs or financial gain.

One time I broke a guy's leg & took his Colt Python from him. He told the cops he was "just trying to scare me". Well he did scare me. Scared me enough to where I figured I better get the gun away from him before he did something stupid with it. I asked the cops if I could keep it.

75% of my shots from my tri-pod are between 190 & 250yds. That is in the woods, but there is a long shooting lane across a thickly over-grown 15 acre area that was selectively logged in the winter of 98/99. I have kept the wide swath cleared where they used a cradle to haul out the logs. There are several other shooting lanes that vary from 75 to 100yds & 1 that is 45yds.

louisville ky That explains a lot. I lived just 80 mile North of Louisvile & they are (almost) all cold weather wussies in them thar parts. So damned hot & humid in the summer at all you can do W/O sweat running off your nose is lay in a bar or a swimming pool. That's fine with them, but let it get down below 40° F & they stand around shivering. Let there be 4" of snow on the roads & they are running to the store hoarding milk & bread.

Deer Keds were awful in 2009. Both bucks taken from my place were covered with them. I thought they were ticks until I discovered they only had 6 legs. Ticks are arachnids & have 8 legs.

Anyone Going After Woodchucks Soon?
wildcat junkie replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I once shot a Woodchuck with my 7m-08 that was so far away, I was able to see the mist on impact when I recovered from the recoil. -
I killed a deer on the 2nd shot back in '87 with my 55# Howett Hunter recurve. After I missed the 1st shot on the walking deer at 15 yds, the deer ran about 10yds & stopped in the only opening to look back to see what the noise was. The 2nd shot took him through the heart quartering away.
