Pygmy
I suspect I have a skunk living under my utility shed, since I have been smelling one around there and can see where something has been burrowing under the shed... A couple of nights ago I set a live trap and baited it with cat food. Two nights in a row something sprung the trap, evidently by trying to get the bait through the side of the trap, so last night I set up my trail cam by the trap to see what was going on.. This morning there were about 100 images...No skunk, but at least a dozen different cats.. I guess I'm gonna have to go down to the local feed store and buy a sack of 'Purina Skunk Chow"...hehehe. Pygmy
one word.....conibear Hehehehehe..Don't think I haven't THOUGHT of that, Culver...But with my luck the first thing I'd catch would be my finance's old gray cat, and I'm getting too OLD to be looking for a new place to live again.... Cabin Fever
If you want to use something that won't attract cats, try Nilla wafer cookies. That's my go-to bait when targeting skunks. BTW, I would recommend covering the trap also...
Culvercreek hunt club
believe it or not...marshmallows work on skunks and woodchucks too.
Doewhacker
We had a whole skunk family visiting our back yard two springs ago, luckily my dog pointed them instead of going in for the kill and crisis was averted. After I shined the light in their eyes I never saw them again, I also called a Skunk trapper because that was the last critter I wanted to deal with. Never caught one but that was ok with me. Good luck

Lawdwaz
Most of the "proper" skunk traps are real short in height so the skunk can't (or isn't supposed to) spray by raising its tail. I bet if Dan set that conibear trap out the first think that would show up would be that darn skunk! Whew.....
Pygmy
I have never caufgt a skunk in a livetrap, but I have friends who have done it, and this is waht they tell me. Approach the trap very slowly and deliberately, making no abrupt moves. Place a small tarp, blanket or something similar over the trap, skunk and all. Very slowly and deliberately pick up the trap and place it in the back of your truck ( or preferably, someone else's truck, hehehe). Drive out in the country, and carefully release the skunk , or drop him trap and all in the creek and come back tomorrow for your trap. Lawdwaz
I have seen & smelled dead skunks on the roads lately, tons of them. Must be the young ones getting kicked out? Also had a couple calls to clean up the stink in the house also. I don't get too involved in those anymore in my business. They can get pretty expensive. Culvercreek hunt club
I have heard the whole tarp or blanket hink over the box trap. I still like the conibear idea better. They are dead before they can even spray.
Cabin Fever
I have heard the whole tarp or blanket hink over the box trap. I still like the conibear idea better. They are dead before they can even spray. I've been a NWCO for several years and have caught 1,000+ skunks in live traps. I've never once been sprayed. They will spray with a conibear! Even if it's just released along with other bodily fluids after death. Honestly, for liability reasons, a conibear just isn't worth the risk of catching the neighbors cat or dog in the trap. If a neighbor went out looking for fluffy or fido, that didn't return home last night, and found it in your conibear, the Humane Society and God only knows who all (media?) would be called and on your ass. Not worth it. JMHO... If you don't want to mess with it or risk being sprayed, hire someone.
Doewhacker
The trapper I dealt with had a piece of sheet metal that he slid over the traps, it worked to shield him and keep the skunk calm too. Luckily I never had the pleasure of finding a skunk in it, it was my duty to go out in the morning and check it for Pepe La pue.
Lawdwaz
I watched a pro trying to get a mom and the babies once and saw, with my own eyes little ones walking across the trigger in a Havaheart trap and not tripping it! The pro (a lady) snuck in with a pole and hit the trigger and caught the little buggers and took them to the gas chamber.

I had to trap one once. it was getting my garbage under the deck I got a hav-a-heart trap and got it the first night. the next morning I took an old drop cloth and covered the trap and hauled it down the road a bit. never got sprayed at all
