Pav2704
Anybody plant Chinese chestnut trees? Is there a big difference between the American chestnut tree? I couldn't find anybody that sold the American chestnut seedlings in bulk so I figured I would try the Chinese version. I wanted a tree that grew somewhat quickly and produced nuts every year. Is there a different tree I could go with that has similar results?
Zag
I think the diff between the two is the chinese is more resistent to desease.
G-Man
Chineese is disese free and is a low growing orchard tree, Pure American will succum to the blight and is a tall fast growing timber tree. They have hybrids available 99% american ect. the american chestnut foundation has good info on them www.acf.org hybrids are available thru many nurserys http://www.chestnuthillnursery.com/Dunstan-Chestnut-Trees-1918.Category.html?gclid=CNChssrkv7QCFQyk4AodLAUAsw Americans produce very fast and are very good to eat (taste like cashews to me). they will gorw anywhere and were once the dominant tree in the northeast over 1/4 of the forest was chestnut. NYSuperSportsman
Check out Dunstan Chestnuts. They are the fastest growing and totally blight resistant! Www.Chestnuthilltreefarm.com or real tree nurseries sell them. I planted 10 bareroot seedlings last year and was thoroughly impressed. The grew a ton of new growth. I'm expecting them to grow a foot next year!

bbrummon
Hi, I got 5 Dunstans this last spring for camp. All 5 went from 2' to about 4.5' but one went wild! There were a bit pricy and all the features lend me to belive that they are chinese. If I buy more I would got to: http://www.empireche...com/catalog.htm Better prices and a larger varity. bbrummon
Hey Bob nice tree...whats the blue wrap your using on them? Those are Blue tree shelters: http://www.growtube.com/products/treeshelter/ Tree shelters, whether blue or white, make a big difference in initial survival and 1st few years growth rate. All the Dunstans will have their tubes removed this year and we will use them for new plantings. To see more of what I did wiht them this last year visit: http://upstatewoods.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
