I suspect that it's pretty cold and you have some snow so I was wondering how are the squirrels moving up there ?

we only had a dusting and some of that melted today as it got up to 20-25, so with that I imagine they were moving quite a bit.

This week will go great for me and I am going to feel well enough to go out next weekend.

Are there a lot of fox squirrels in your area ?

I've seen them, but never in NY...

Does anyone know their range in NY ?

I live in southern Steuben County, not far from the PA border. We have fox squirrels along the river bottoms , at least here in the Chemung/Tioga basin. They are not plentiful, but not rare..I have shot one and have seen some nice specimens roadkilled, always along the river bottoms. Al Strouse, of Strouse taxidermy, has a huge one mounted that he shot along the Tioga River near Lindley while we was duck hunting.

I have only seen them here in the higher elevations in one area. A place where I hunted spring gobblers last year, a hilltop oak grove near the PA border, had a colony of fox squirrels. I saw at least a half dozen there in a couple of mornings while I was gobbler hunting.

I posted this under another topic but here is a petition to show support for the squirrel hunting event because a woman from Texas started another petition against the "murder" and "slaughter" of the squirrels. She has thousands of signatures from all over the U.S. These people think anyone especially kids hunting is wrong.

Paula, I think the woman that started all the trouble is a P.E.T.A supporter and sent the story all over.There are people from outside the U.S. protesting. I say they should get a life and stop trying to dictate what others do.

I read that the organization "Friends of Animals " will be protesting from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Sat. the 16th near the Holley firehouse.I am not looking forward to seeing them.I also heard this event will no longer take place at the firehouse after this year so it looks like the anti-hunters won.

I seen the news about the protesters, do you think there will be more than 4 that was seen on the news? My friend pulled her son out of it because she heard there was going to be a swat team there just to protect or keep peace.

I have heard there will be a group of protesters, I imagine there will be more than 4 but I don't really know.I also was told there will be multiple police agencies providing security.I hope both sides behave.I think these people believe the squirrels are released and shot by kids and large groups of armed people,they are clueless.

In Holley????? OMG. I worked in Holley years ago by the car wash. I just might go up there, just to see this. Maybe hunters should organize a nice peaceful rally of their own.

Be a nice little fund raiser for the fire company. Maybe throw $10 into a hat for them.

My boneheaded self didn't get tickets for the Slam in time. Sure wish I had. What a great way to show support for us, especially after Kuomo's doings. I'll be watching the news online and on TV I guess. Anyone on here attending, please keep me / us posted.

Well my friend and I didn't find any squirrels or win anything but it was fun anyway.I saw people protesting and others supporting the event.I read one guy was arrested for harassing the protesters.I didn't have any problem walking to the firehall and once inside I didn't even know the protesters existed.I want to hunt more now thanks to these wacko anti-hunting zealots.

My friend ended up going and took his kid, a woman told him he was a bad parent, he told her "there is one cure for ignorance and and that's knowledge you dumb b*tch

The guy was arrested for threatening a protester. You can see on the news he said you only stand with so many so your not shot!

I didn't understand that guy getting arrested,he said without all these people protecting you (police) somebody is going to shoot you guys.He was charged with harassment.He should of been smarter than that because he gave the news and anti-hunters something to talk about.

I watched it,glad your friend answered them back.Some of the comments the anti-hunters make are so hateful and rude on the various websites.Self-rightous haters that think they are superior intellectually and morally.What a joke.

I GOOGLEd Holley Squirrel Hunt and got a few listings / reports . Some of the responses were made that the hunters should be shot , etc .. Also that hunters are Neandthrals , illiterate and so on .

Fasteddie, one guy made comments that squirrel hunters had to compensate for being sexually inadequate. I think many of them are directing unhappy unfulfilling lives at hunters.Why else would they travel hundreds of miles to a small farming community to stand in the cold and judge people ?
