Driving up from LI. Any suggested routes better than others in mid-August? Any advice is much appreciated.
Lawdwaz
I can't add much to the Niagara Falls sight seeing but could endorse Fort Niagara in Youngstown (the furthest north west you can go in NYS!!) and stopping in Lewiston for the Jet Boat trip of your/their life, guaranteed!!!! You won't believe those boats, and.........DO NOT TAKE THE COVERED ONE!! Go from the US side in Lewiston.......... http://www.whirlpooljet.com/ You'll take the 90 to the 290 then the 190. Jeremy K
X2 on the jet boat ride , also check out the hiking trail along the lower niagara river ,its an incredible walk . You may also want to check out the Canadian side of the falls ,it offers alot more stuff to see and do ,you'll need a passport or enhanced license to get back into the states without a hassle . You could also check out the power authority , they may have tours but just driving through the area you will see some part of it , it is massive in size. Fort Niagara is a cool place to check out as well Edited August 5, 2013 by Jeremy K
Deerthug
Thanks for the advice. We were thinking of hitting SUNY Albany first and head over to SUNY Rochester or Genesseo to check out the colleges for my daughter before heading to the falls. May stop at my camp on way up for an overnight stay and hit the road early in the morning.

We were planning to stay on the other side. Passports are all ready. The kids would like the jet boat but the wife would turn green on anything smaller than a cruise ship. Lol! Which by the way we just booked today for the Bahamas in the winter. Edited August 5, 2013 by Deerthug
JimR
Try a meal at the top of the Skylon tower, you ride up on an external elevator, and the restaurant rotates 360 while you eat. Edited August 5, 2013 by JimR
wooly
You guys should be right on time for the Erie County Fair. I wouldn't call it a tourist destination, but it's a stones throw off the I-90 and I bet the whole family would enjoy the stop. Other than that, I can't think of anything much more exciting unless you wanna stop over for a beer and some small talk!

Over 1 million in attendance in it's 9 day running in Hamburg , NY.. If the fams into motor events; The "Ultimate Night of Destruction" featuring Krazy Train and Aftershock, monster truck action on the 15th. Truck and tractor pulls on the 16th and 17th. They have the worlds largest Demolition Derbys on the last Sunday( 18th). Draft horse pulls and some of the best shows in the northeast. The J. E. Strates mile long midway is sure to set the spot with the kids, LOL. Some of the best fair foods around. I say it's one of the biggest county fairs around, and one of the best. Nick Wallenda is even attending, LOL.
