Hello all,

This site was recommended to me by an old Army buddy of mine so I thought that I would come check it out. My actual name is Michael and I am really new to hunting. The 2013 season will be only my second season of hunting. I didn't get anything last year. I did take a shot at a big 8-pointer last year but I missed horribly and didn't see another deer the rest of the season. I do fish as well. I'm hoping that this site will help me advance my skills and make a better and more well versed hunter as well as helping make sure that I am legal to the law of the current season.

I look forward to meeting you all!!

Welcome to HNY. Experience will come with time and a little patience.

Best of luck in the upcoming season!

The NYSDEC website has all the legal info that you'll need, but sometimes understanding the written laws can be a little tricky. Let us know how we can help.

Welcome! This site has a ton of information and plenty of people hoping to expand the ever shrinking NY hunter population. Just remember everyone has an opinion, if you ask for theirs plan for it to not necessarily to match yours. Depending on where you are, you may even get someone to help ya scout and set up. Good luck this year!

Welcome,

Looks like your first year was a success - saw and got a shot.  Didn't see a deer during season between shooting hours for first 2-3 years.

Here are the guidelines:

  • practice with intended weapon and ammo/arrow/bolt to get your eye set
  • pre-scout intended areas
  • pre-set up stand if use one and can leave it out there
  • arrive early and go in quietly (have spooked deer on the trail in the dark berfore)
  • stay calm and relaxed for the shot (no buck fever - cost me deer before)
  • be excited after it drops to the ground
  • be calm when field dressing (cut up fingers not fun, and don't puncture the bladder)
  • save energy for the drag out

May want a clothes pin if get a buck in rut.

I may see you out there as we are both in the Hudson valley - good luck.

It may say that I am a newbie, but that is because I am a recent NY hunter.  I harvested deer where I use live before I moved to this state.  Now I have to deal with hunting public land.
