Trailer sway??

Folks,

In the last month or two I have seen a couple of trailers with quads on them. The trailer is swaying  back and forth, it looks so unsafe. Does anyone know the cause of this? Just a guess but I think the tongue is too short, just a guess? (These trailers are small, FYI)

are they home made or modified trailers? How close are you to the trailer weight limits? I have seen this in home mages if the axle isn't truely perpendicular to the tongue.

I would assume they were made at home. I had a good freind of mine make one for a single snowmobile and it would sway pretty bad. We ended up getting some bigger wheels and it really seemed to ground the trailor a little more.

My guess would be that they have the 4 wheeler to far back and not over the axle... I see guys all the time putting lite stuff in the front of the trailer and then the 4 wheeler all the way in back... A good way to wear out the tires on the trailer...

It could be a weight distribution issue or the axle is not square on the trailer.

I saw this once with a guy who was trailering a rather large boat with a small-ish car. It was so bad that I was sure he was going to lose it. I have no idea why they do it. It's just some pattern that gets started and gets worse and worse. You see a lot of that with tractors pulling 4-wheel wagons full of hay.

There can be lots of reasons for sway, from how the weight is loaded on the trailer, to overloaded axle or tires, to air pressure in the tires. Most people just have no idea how to properly load their trailer, even the small ones.
