CuseHunter
I got a nice spot to hunt next to my college. Over 100+ acres, all wedged between residential housing and college. Well the owner said there is a monster buck back there, said there is tons of deer. I didn't really think much of it till I walked back there today. Oh my lord, tons and tons of trails, all with multiple fresh tracks. Apples and acorns and streams are located. Only problem is that the middle of the land is a perfect spot to hunt, only problem is that there is no trees anywhere to put a stand. 90% of his land is new growth, all tall grass and saplings so thick. The area I could put a stand in is too close to the college, only 400-600 yards till the deer would be in the parking lot. How should I hunt this area? Any advice on these super dense non-mature woods?
New York Hillbilly
I wouldn't go walking into the middle of the place leaving scent all over. Find yourself the nearest apple orchard on the place that has intersecting trails and set up on the ground. Good luck!
The Silent bang
I agree and also take some apples home to leave in a bag with your clothes to help disguise your sent. good luck
CuseHunter
well this is my first time looking at the property so I wanted to see what the place looks like. I have just the right idea where to go for food. There is a nice apple spot and tons of acorns 50 yards away. Oh yeah, and a stream in between. Sounds like a tri-fecta to me

Other than that access through thr creek water and set up a blind or something. A tree should never stop you from success, unless your arrow hits it. G-Man
get a topo find the natural terrain funnel sit and hunt it.. don't worry about what food...if they have to cross a creek in a certain spot, or a ditch or a brushy draw you will get a deer there! I'll have to dig up some topos, the deer I found are primarily walking through the real thick areas where some apple trees are. Impossible to hunt in there but found a nice spot on the edge where I can climb up in a stand

Merlot
Cusehunter, When you mention this property is wedged between residential and college property, I hope for your sake that there are no problems when the first shot rings out...you know how anti-gun/hunting people can get. Next thing you know, some do-gooder group shows up from the "hood" banging pots and pans in protest to your hunting near the campus and residential area, even with permission from the owner. God luck and I sincerely hope things work out for you...Good luck this season.
bluecoupe
I agree with Merlot. As far as the scent issue, given your description of the area, chances are they are so used to human scent that it's not an issue. And keep in mind the distance requirements:Question: How far from a building do I have to be to discharge my firearm?Answer: You cannot discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of any school, playground, occupied factory or church. You cannot discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of a dwelling, farm building, or structure unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent. CuseHunter
I'm fine when it comes to legally discharging a firearm with the 500 ft rule. Just didn't want to shoot a deer and have it run across the campus haha. But I am only bow hunting the area. The owner doesn't want any guns because of the houses
Nomad
In the past I hunted a spot near a parking lot. Like my stand was maybe 75 yards from it, the building was a lot farther I yes I had permission and shot away from the lot. I gun and bow hunted it. It was a bit of a staging area for the deer. The workers would be yelling to each other slamming doors, starting cars, and burning out from time to time. All the while the deer and at times mature bucks would be all around and not even raise a head! As for stands I hang them where you could in the 400 to 600 yard spot. I had 75 yards and none ran out to it, the tend to want to stay in or run to the cover. Although I understand your concern . I definitely want to sit the stand location near there, I saw a scrape today, it was a small hoof though planted in it.
