Going to try keep this as up to date as possible this year.  I’ve scouted a bunch of pieces since last winter and have been letting cameras soak most of the summer.  I’ve got 3 bucks I’m targeting that I’ve personally seen and 1 I’ve only heard rumors about but will see if I can get on sign from it.

seasons right around the corner and have some last minute things to finish up and practice some more with my climbing setup so I have the least amount of screwups on opening day.

Only have a couple goals this year. 1 is to get my father on a decent buck or just able to get into the woods, hopefully get a buck with my bow big enough for a shoulder mount, improve on my outdoor/hunting skills some more, and spend sometime with friends and family enjoying what we love.

Below are the 3 big main bucks I’m hoping to track down this year. The wide 7 I had an encounter with last year.

can’t wait for the chest match to begin. Good luck to all those going out this year.

Went for a ride tonight and the big 7 has shifted almost 2 miles away. However he had a new friend a giant 10pt I haven’t seen this year.  So I’m going to have to see what I can come up with on that chunk of stateland.  Still haven’t been able to find the split g2 buck that was hanging out with the big 7 all summer.

Did you go glassing or spotlighting to find some of these guys? Or is it all cam data?

That's something to look forward too!

went on a squirrel slash scouting trip.  Found an awesome spot all tore up rubs, scrapes and tracks everywhere. It’s a 3 acre oak flat that leads into a swamp.  Only oaks that have acorns are right at the point and it’s all white oaks.  My guess is bedding to be just off the point 75yrds from the oaks.   With no sign of any hunters from past years.

I snuck my way out and there had to be over 100rubs over the 1/2 mile walk out from last year all waist high.  On the way out I came across a small crab apple orchard with bear tracks in it.  Wind sets up perfect for opening night so I’m going to try sneak into the oak flat early.

the cherry tree picture is 75yrds from the point with a rub on each side and a scrape on the left with tracks in it.  All the oaks are out in front. With 3 trails connecting 20yrds in front of the tree and 2 trails coming past in a v shape 20 yrds on each side of the cherry. Wind should be blowing left to right up the hill that night.  Hoping for a strong enough wind the thermals don’t mess with my scent to much

Well everything worked out minus the big boy closing the last 50yrds. Had to coyote howl to get them off the field so I could sneak out.  Have to go back in the morning after kids get on the bus to pull my setup since it’s on stateland.

they came out at 515 and fed from 125-83 and wouldnt make that final commitment.

this will add two more shooters to my list. I haven’t seen these 2 yet.  I thought it was one I’ve seen when they stepped out but I haven’t laid eyes on either one of them possibly the smaller one but not the big one.  Watched them knock tines a few times but pretty much pigged out for 2 hrs straight.

Scouted my way into a swamp I’ve been eyeing and the bucks haven’t moved in. Sign is 2 weeks old from the looks. Went back to the spot I’ve been seeing the smaller 8.  Saw a 4pt and one unknown before another hunter popped out into the field 15mins before legal ended.

I’m hoping. Never know but I feel like I have a chance to get a couple again this year.

that bigger buck my buddy has nicked named HD(heavy duty) based on his body size and the small 8 mini HD because he’s always not to far behind the big one.

Just ordered a second tactacam reveal x.  Going to put it in the are I got all those buck pictures.  Thinking Thursday or Sunday I will sneak in with my bow and back track to where those bucks are coming from and set it up.

not 100% sure where they are bedding but have a decent idea you can see on the map it drops down into a low lying area and can see a transition line on the map. My guess is that’s where they are coming from.  All appear on comers to be either coming from that way or going back that way. The top deer symbol is the transition line the other one is where the last camera was set up.  The stand location is where I encountered the big one opening weekend.

pictures of the deer are the 2 bucks I’m interested in that area.

Just a doe today pulled cameras and had 1 big buck and another decent from October 1st-October 20th. Once I got service I had a shooter in front of my camera at 8am this morning in another spot.

the first picture I was 100yrds from that camera I think I probably jumped him going into that spot.

I’ll be in the tree just to the right of the bucks head(last photo) tomorrow morning. 2 daylight photos in 2 of last 3 days at 840. Going to sit there the next couple mornings to see what I can come up with.

Had a great sit this morning.  Saw 2 different 6 points the second one being a borderline shooter for me.  He may not get a second pass.  Also saw a big flock of turkeys and one gobbled 3 times.

watched the little 6pt make a scrape at 15yrds.  He was right in front of my cell camera. The bigger 6 I’m pretty sure is the buck I had on camera yesterday morning. I’m in a tree just on the other side of the beech trees on the left. Other picture is from yesterday but the deer I let walk today at 12 yards.

1 doe this morning was all. She acted like something was in the thicket behind her but I never saw anything else. Going to give that spot a break and go try and catch up to the split g2 buck.

doe picture is 20mins before I got on stand this morning,6pt is the bigger one I passed yesterday morning and the split g2 buck is who I’m chasing the next couple days also has a smaller 8pt friend in the same swamp.

  • 2 weeks later...

Went out this past Saturday with my nephew.  Had him set up in a ground blind. About 840 he had either a 4 or 6 come within 25 yrds and he couldn’t get swung to get the shot off.  I was 200 yrds away and didn’t see anything.

checked a camera on the same piece about 500yrds from where we sat and had the split g2 buck there at 740 working the scrape line.  Photo is a screen shot of the buck. One step behind the big boys this year hopefully I run into one of them.
