NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew Cuomo kicked off the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend Saturday by telling supporters of the Rev. Al Sharpton that New York must stop treating 16- and 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system.

“We have a civil right crisis, which is, 16- and 17-year-olds in this state get tried as adults,” Cuomo said at the Harlem headquarters of Sharpton’s National Action Network.

Cuomo said New York and North Carolina are the only two states that prosecute all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults and added, “That law has got to go. I’m going to make it my priority.”

The Democratic governor also touted his administration’s initiatives in education, gun control and expanding the number of state contracts that go to minority and women-owned businesses.

“Every study says, the younger you get the child in the classroom the better for the child,” Cuomo said. “Every studsstudy says, the young mind is open, the young mind is ready, get it in there for positive lessons. “We want to have universal full-day pre-K all across the state of New York,” Cuomo added.

Cuomo called for universal pre-kindergarten in his state of the state speech earlier this month but has not said how it will be funded.

Cuomo said he wanted to come to Sharpton’s weekly rally to set the tone for the holiday honoring King. He recalled being invited by Coretta Scott King to deliver an address at the slain civil rights leader’s former Atlanta church on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1999 when he was U.S. secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

“I was flattered by it and also nervous about it,” he said.

Cuomo said he studied King’s writings in preparation for his speech. He said he learned, “Justice is not an evolutionary process. Justice happens if we make it happen.”

Al Sharpton is a rotton POS! He is the most racist d-bag in America, and he needs racism to be prevalent in this country in order to show his face, and spew his propaganda. And Im sorry but 16 and 17 year olds should be tried as adults when they act like adults.  It may be hard for people to understand but when you have "kids" joining adult gangs and committing serious crimes they should pay the piper.  I think the judicial system is flawed, there should be set in stone punishments for crimes and it is what it is.

You know, one might begin to suspect that some of this is even stretching the limits of you average liberal New York State occupant. This guy is starting to slip out of the liberal camp and plunging into full scale socialism. I have to believe that all this nonsense has got to eventually begin to erode even his own voting base, leaving a lot of voters looking for an alternative. We may find that a lot of voters have developed reasons of their own to help us oust this little weirdo. We just may find some strange and unexpected allies in this next election if a decent opposing candidate should happen along.

He is catering to the minority audience today. Teenaged crime in the African-American community is very high. He is pandering to the parents and relatives that have teenagers that have been in the system. I will agree with him that they would be much much better off sitting in a seat in a classroom. I guess you could say that about any kid that decides to walk away from an education. The issue is, what is he proposing to get them IN those seats. This is the Liberal approach. Bitch about and treat the symptom rather than the illness itself. The truth is those kids wouldn't be committing those crimes he wants them to get a pass on if they were in school. (how many A or B student's do you hear bout committing Felonies? BUT what is his plan to get them in school? Mandatory Pre-K and full day Kindergarten? yeah...ok.

So a 17 year old beats up an old lady for her purse, but he's only 17 and he shouldn't have known better? More entitlement... Good to know more and more New Yorkers wont be able to defend themselves against these attacks either. And it's not like the knock out game is a new fad or anything either. Lets give them  a free pass.

Knockout perpetrators have been charged with hate crimes when they've been found to be targeting specific groups.

Really? Can you point one out besides the white kids that hit the black? It originated with African-American youth and was originally called "polar bear hunting". You are right. they weren't targeting other groups, except polar bears. Maybe we should be focusing on getting PETA in this fight...lol

I actually just googled it and it looks like there are many examples of people being charged with hate crimes.

I have seen assaults charged as such this punch and run crap (knock out game) seems to only swing one way. The only one I know of being charged  in these events with a hate crime was the guy in Texas. (An I think he should have been)

Seriously, Have you seen any hate crime charges with minorities as the assailants?

I went back and reread Virgil, I can see how it could be taken either way so I'll retract my post to you.

Personally, I don't see it as a race issue. If some idiot goes around hitting someone out of the blue, I don't care who they hit or what group they belong to; it should be a hate crime and prosecuted as such.
