Was out early this am as I had a day off, heard.3 Different ruffed grouse drumming in about 300 yard area. Most I've heard in quite a few years. Perhaps with a dryer spring maybe they will have a good hatch...deer and turkey hunting is fine but nothing beats a day hunting grouse for excitement and shooting!!

I feel bad for you guys.  Im in Chenango in 7P and always see and hear grouse all year in spring turkey hunting through bow and gun season.

Plenty around by me.  But  now that I got a new german short haired pointer im guessing I wont see any and luck usually has it.

Lots of grouse up my way as well... saw a few woodcock this year too.. haven't seen one of those it quite a while. See lots of grouse sunning themselves on the old stone walls during bow season when the sun is out... makes me wish I could carry a small pistol with the bow... just afraid of ruining too many arrows on the stone wall... even if I don't miss. Wooden arrows don't hold up well against the stone. Sometimes I'll bring a .22 in the truck and trade some deer hunting for some grouse hunting on a warm afternoon during the bow season. Such a tasty bird and easy to clean

For the last 15 years or so I have had the pleasure of hunting spring gobblers with a good friend near his home in Ontario.

One thing that adds to that pleasure is getting to hear lots of grouse drumming. I hear a few around home in Steuben County, but it's nothing like it used to be.

The first season I hunted small game back in the early 60s, I killed 14 grouse with a 16 gauge single shot. Heck, I haven't killed 14 grouse in the last 14 YEARS !

Yeah things certainly have changed since the bird hunting of the 60's and 70's... not the turkeys as today.. but ohhhhh the pheasants, woodcock and grouse!
