Susky Muskies

Decided to fish just for musky this yr in the suckyhanna and have come up with a 36 inch northern and Saturday caught a 42in pure bred musky.  what a fight. I set the hook and that sucker was out of the water tail walking like a bass. what a rush. on a side note i took my daughter down one day and she landed a 40 in northern which suprised the heck out of both of us. Because she was fishing for carp with a wad of corn.  Dont think ill ever fish for anything else. im ruined on them for anything else.

Sounds like fun! I was an avid walleye fisherman for years and at times during  early season we would catch more musky than walleye(of course they weren't in season yet). Nothing like a 40" fish jumping out of the water !!

Ive never caught more 25" walleye in my life realing large plastics through deep holes in the suck. Got one yesterday down in johnsoncity. Have 5 so far this yr. Fished for 10 hrs for musky yesterday and got the walleye and a greedy smallmouth as long as the musky spinner i was using. No musky not even a swipe. They are a tough fish.

Hand made a few 7" wooden plugs out of pressure treated deck boards i had laying around the house the other day. Did a quick spray paint job and used fingernail polish for the eyes and stripes on the lure. took them down to a spot that i know alway holds a few nice pike and tested it out. 5th cast I had a large toothy critter take a wack at it but it think i yanked it out of his mouth before he could bite down or he missed it. Nearly blasted it a foot out of the water about 20 ft from the shore. nearly crapped my pants. I am suprised at the action of the lure its almost like a plastic jerk bait. slowly sinks and slides nice when jerked. it even wobbles nice on a slow retrive. going to make a few more when i get a chance. First two were a rough version that took me about an hr to make. going to spend a little more time on the sanding and painting next time. they arent pretty but pretty lures just catch fisherman not fish.

That's the truth.. I spend 90% of my fishing time Lm bass fishing. Over the years I have collected enough cool tackle to make my tackle box worth an easy $500.. For the last few years I have "polished" my worm fishing techniques and except for early morn and evenings(top water) that's all i throw.. lol

 

 

If you are like me , with quick reflexes, ya gotta learn to slow down that hook set on tw lures until you feel the fish, that splash always gets ya though...

Yeah me to, except i wish it was only $500. I now only use a hand full of lures mostly spinners, wacky worms and a few cranks for the bass.cheap Jigs for walleye. When my nephew shows up he usually goes home with a handfull of stuff every time he leaves. Made a few jointed plugs the other day for musky. Im really suprised at how well they go through the water. Was like wow I made that ? lol Haven thad a chance to get out and fish them yet though. My wife and daughter will be gone all next week so Ill get in more fishing than I can handle prolly then. Need to get out i can smell the pike on my hands already.

Well after a dry spell I finally connected this weekend with a couple of nice fish. Landed a nice 36in Northern on Saturday night. Sunday I went with a friend in a boat and landed a nice 40in Musky at around  7am. Also had my first follow up  while doing a figure 8 next to the boat. Fish was close to a 50incher. Its quite a shock to the old nervous system when out of no where you have 4 ft fish chasing your lure around in circles right at the boat. Sent me into immediate buck fever. Was an awesome time.

Also all fish were immediatly released after some very quick pics. If you catch them like this get a replica. They are much nicer than the real thing anyhow. I know this will prolly tick off some taxidermists but put them back. Took them a long time to get that big.

Nice fish! I wish I had time to try out the musky rod I bought a year ago. I did stop down Saturday evening near confluence park on a whim to catch a few smallies and only got 1. Way too many people on the susky lately. I used to be able to get smallies every other cast on top water during the last 45 minutes of daylight.

I recognized Kamikaze curve as well in the last pic. Congrats on some Great fish. Wish I had more time to hit the river. I end up taking the kids to a small largemouth pond all the time.

Smallies have been little slow this yr tho I got about 15 of them Saturday night. Yeah right behind kmart it was in the spring tho so the water was a little deeper there. Went down the other night and it was only knee deep right now. Plus it smelled like there was a dead body around somewhere. must be from all the sewer running in from the drains.Fish must have moved down out of one of the pools up around otsinango park. Total fluke, my daughter caught him on corn fishing for carp. Other fish were caught up stream from windsor and down in Johnson city.

I'm jealous.

 

When I lose my fervor for bowhunting due to age, injury, or just more time on my hands, I really want to target pike/musky. They're a mythical fish for me. I've only ever caught a handful in my time and I just don't get out to do so any longer with other commitments.

The spot behind kmart has always been a known spot for muskies, even long before anyone realized we had full strain muskies. The same goes for Rock bottom & goudy station

Not sure about musky behind kmart. I know they use to get the hybrids back there long ago when they stocked them, but it seems a bit dirty for pure strain. They prefer the clear clean waters further up near cv or cf or up near green. Have never got a musky in the chenango actually. Just Northerns. Have had some real beasts on at goudy  while walleye fishing and found a 55 in dead musky down around murphys. I hear between appilacian and owego is good for them also but still havent caught one down there.

Yeah hybrids are Tiger Muskies and up until a couple years ago that was all they believed to be in the susky/chenango. Now full strain breeding muskies have taken ahold and they get to trophy size so the DEC increased the minimum size limit. Musky fry has a lower survival rate when northern pike are present because the pike fry hatches first and eats the muskies

Yeah i guess PA has been stocking them over in Hallstead for yrs now and they have taken hold so they stopped stocking tigers. Now the only place it seems they stock the tigers in Long Pond and Chenango Lake in Broom county. Which is to bad. Had a buddy who use to get some real slammers out of Whitney point above and below the Dam. Not sure if pure musky live in their or not.
