Any advice to keep poachers off your land?

Peeping toms are one issue (spotlighters); those that break and enter to steal (poachers) are another issue.

I have read this a couple times now. So, I have a couple questions....

 

Are you in your house when you see the lights in the fields? If so, then they are breaking the law, So keep an eye out for the same area, and if it continues, set up in the dark and take a pic of the plate number on the vehicle and make a report.

 

If!!! You are not in your house when it happens, then what are you doing in the woods after dark? Just strolling for some midnight air?

 

You never answered my question. Leads me to have to think YOU are in the woods as well.

Yeah, that's the way to deal with it. Do you even realize, Now, if those people read then and get a flat, you may be liable as this is a threat.

I feel no sympathy for you and your problems. Yes I agree that if someone is illegally removing your signs and trespassing then do what you have to to bust them and press charges so the community knows you mean business. But  when you call them your deer and people have no right to do a legal activity, that is total BS. If you don't want people looking on to your property than do something about it, but if it is open and I see a deer, you bet your tail I am going to stop and take a look at it. As long as I can legally park on the state owned shoulder and not disrupt the flow of traffic, I will light the deer or gawk in broad daylight. Telling someone that they can not do a legal activity because you don't agree with it doesn't make any sense to me. But if you are into that whole dictator thing I am sure Gov. Cuomo can find a nice job for you.

 

 

Also if you want to solve the problem with grains I would say go for it, while you are sitting in a cell, I would be back in the same spot admiring the nice deer you will never be able to harvest =p

That one is tough to understand for me. It is morally wrong for me to enjoy looking at deer and other wildlife at night, and to allow it on the farm I hunt? I guess I am morally corrupted thinking wildlife is for all to enjoy, and not just landowners and the lease holders. I am probably supposed to be especially mad at my neighboring property because they took two mature bucks last year that I saw on my land earlier in the season. Not. Deer hunting will always be a hobby for me that involves friends, family, and even people I have yet to meet. I have not shot a mature buck in two years, but friends and neighbors have, and we enjoy them together.

 

I feel that the more hunters stress about the little things, the closer it gets to being just like a job. There has not been one post condoning shooting deer with a spotlight, yet you keep coming back to poaching. Big difference. Not every spot lighter is looking to hunt or shoot a deer. But, if you want to lose sleep over worrying about someone seeing your deer, be my guest. I'm proud of the fact that over the last 5-10 years, the experienced hunters in my area become comfortable letting bucks walk for the benefit of all. And, at the same time, let the youngsters and newcomers shoot what they want. Some years we shoot a lot of does to fill our freezers. Some years the luck is on our side, and a few will be fortunate enough to score on nice bucks.

 

Guess I rambled on a little bit. I am just more old school than a lot of people on here. I have more fun hunting and comparing notes, sightings, pictures, etc with other people and property owners.

Sorry I do not see what is morally wrong or unethical about spotlighting deer.  Gotta make this quick, bout to walk out the door and do some spotlighting.  I like to see and enjoy the rut even when I am not in the stand.

 

oh yea... ever heard of a bird watcher? well I like to watch deer, and since deer tend to move at night thats one of the best times to watch.

This makes no sense!

You are running in circles, and will never catch your tail.

 

You have no proof the people are actually on that land. So, therefore, you cannot prove poaching is going on. Lighting up a field is not poaching. Have they literally killed animals on 'your' land? Do you hear shots at night? Is it 'your' land?

 

You can keep ignoring me, I don't care. But you should at least think about what you are saying. It seems like you just want a reason to harass other people who you "THINK" are doing you wrong.

It is allowed by law to spot light, but not within 600 ft. of an occupied dwelling.  Also, if you are within the legal set backs, and the deer runs when the light hits it, and an encon witnesses it, you can be busted for " Harrying the animal.  There is a law on the books regarding harrying big game.

A deer has a natural fear of humans. If they run, the light has little to do with it. The naysayers should be thanking the people who slow down or pull over to look. We're keeping them on their toes and away from the road, so you're welcome!

Regarding spotlighting, pls do it on your land not others, no need to scope out what they have on their property unless w/ the intent to steal it or drive it off their land. If it is simply a curiosity thing please have the courtesy to only do it post season.

It may not be illegal to shine a huge spotlight in your eyes at night but doesn't make it ok for me to do it, simply because I enjoy doing it.

Stay safe, respect peoples property, and enjoy the season.

Trespassers / poachers on the land is a different story. If they know you aren't there that's where it's tough. You can try to catch them with cameras, or have people come up and hunt when your not there.

I have had a problem with trespassers since I bought my land. Neighbors know when your not there with a simple drive by. Even when you are there you can't be everyplace at once, and they know that. They will trespass at night knowing you aren't out there.

It's an uphill battle every year.

Just remember, you will catch one of them one day, and that's when you get your point across

With a sign like that you might as well cut it into about 5" wide strips and roll it up on a cardboard tube because it has about as much legal standing as toilet paper.

Am when the police arrive, they'll happily show the police where they're spotlighting which if it's more than 500 feet of a dwelling, the police will actually be annoyed that you've called them out here.

It has nothing to do with respect. I personally don't spotlight but all I have heard you do is whine. As I said early on. it is legal. if you have a problem with it, do something about it. Change your land o get the law changed. To be honest, your "my animals" attitude speaks volumes of your level of respect.

Some people may not want to deal with the hassle of the police pulling them over.

Some people may say I'm not doing anything illegal so go ahead and call them.

It's the thought in people's head that if they spotlight they will be talking to the police or dec. If they have a road soda with them or anything else on them that may cause a problem they are gonna drive by that field 9 times out of 10.

That being said, I have spotlighted on private property but if I saw a sign like that I wouldn't want to deal with the bs. To each their own I guess
