Pav2704
Anybody seeing or not seeing deer in their food plots? I have one plot that's about an acre of corn and brassica and it's barely getting hit. I have been getting the occasional doe on the trail camera but I am really surprised by the lack of activity all season. There's hardly any hunter pressure in this area except for the occasional sit every other week or so and I usually only check my camera during this sit. I have another spot of turnips that was devoured by mid October. I thought the mix of corn and brassica would be a slam dunk??? I don't get it?? dbHunterNY
an acre of corn won't last long at all. brassicas would be hit if it did ok and came up. I assume they're strips of each and not mixed together? maybe the camera isn't picking up everything but it's still getting some activity. also you can't probably see deer in the corn if you're hunting it. landtracdeerhunter
Their starting to hit the food plots again here, after a 4 week stretch idle. Was a lot of food around. Now with the colder weather and snow fall, not so much
growalot
I have less that an acre of standing corn and it is still loaded with ears ...they just cut the big fields save a coupl of acres and there are deer in my standing corn nighty and fawns allday...the turnips inthe soybeans were hit hard and all at night save the fawns...what theyare hiting in this snow are the high sugar grass plots and that is at variuos times...though due to wind and the crunching of snow I'm never able to sneak in with out bumping them.. genesee_mohican
Every deer I have seen in the woods was devouring acorns like crazy, and in my travels around this farm country I rarely see a deer out in the alfalfa. It's an odd year that way. My guess is they are focusing on acorns more than normal to put on fat for what looks to be another long cold winter. growalot
Lordy our acorns were gone weeks ago...and it was a fair year concidering the year before they couldn't eat them all there were so many...
genesee_mohican
The park down here has them all over the place still. Birds, squirrels deer and turkey are vacuuming them up like crazy as of a few days ago. It's fascinating to sit in my stand and watch all the animals eat them. G-Man
they are just into some other food that is available right now..they will hit it again.
bubba
There is plenty of food still around acorns beechnuts etc. Besides the past week or two food has not been a priority to them.
Pav2704
I'll be heading up tonight and we're suppose to get a WNW wind tomorrow so I will finally get a chance to sit on the edge of that field again. My last good encounters were back in the beginning of October with the bow. I had a real nice 6 and 8 spar a little bit but they were out about 45-50 yards and never came any closer. Then around Halloween I had the same 8 come out 35 yards to my right but the cover from the pine tree wouldn't let me draw my bow in that direction. Since then, the cameras have shown very little activity. I'm hoping with the cold temps and rut activity, one of them will be out tomorrow afternoon feeding!!! TreeGuy
There is food elsewhere. What do you have within a mile ? Big corn, farmers fields, apples, acorns ? Have faith. They will find that corn once the snow is up and rut is all over. Edited November 21, 2014 by TreeGuy
Pygmy
My brassicas are getting hit, but only after dark... I assume that during the day they are eating the tremendous acorn crop..I have seen a few acorn crops this heavy, but never one heavier..All they have to do is stand up from thier beds and eat.. They sure aren't moving much to feed..
Pav2704
Pygmy... you are absolutely correct. Last weekend trail camera pics should the plot getting hit at night. The fawns are starting to hit the plot at last light. I was also surprised to see a flock of turkey spending a great deal of time in brassica on more than one occassion. Even though I wasn't able to use the plot to hunt over this year, I know that it will definitely feed and hold deer over the winter!!! outdoorstom
You're going to be in great shape come late season. With all that food, they'll be in there for sure. Good luck!
