DEC Region 5 Environmental Conservation Police 2014 Hunting Season Report

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) ticketed numerous poachers for violating hunting and firearm laws and regulation during the big game hunting season.

"Enforcing hunting and trapping laws helps to ensure suitable populations of deer, bear and other wildlife in the region and throughout the state," said Regional Environmental Conservation Police Captain Daniel Darrah. "It also ensures that the large majority of law abiding hunters are provided are fair opportunity to pursue game that these poachers are taking. DEC and the Environmental Conservation Police appreciate the thousands of hunters who consistently adhere to hunting regulations and guidelines, and who pass on the traditions of safety, responsibility and conservation to the next generation."

ECOs charged 152 individuals with a total of 270 total charges. The charges included 91 misdemeanors and 179 violations. The breakdown of the charges include:

• 44 charges pertaining to the illegal taking of big game (m);
• 10 possession of firearm during bow or muzzleloader season (m);
• 8 discharges within 500 feet of a dwelling (m);
• 3 Criminal possession of a weapon 4th (m)
• 31 firearms related charges (loaded gun in a motor vehicle, shooting from roadway) (m and v);
• 81 tickets related to tagging, reporting and licensing (v);
• 39 charges for hunting with bait or placing salt (v);
• 30 trespass on posted property (v);
• 6 spotlighting (4 m, 2 v); and
• 4 loaded crossbows in a motor vehicle (v).

During the course of arresting the poachers ECOs confiscated 35 illegally taken deer, the vast majority of which were donated to area food banks.

that's a lot of violations....and just think how many people get away with illegal activity.

I think poaching happens more often than people think. Ive always thought about starting a poaching group. Find donors so we can buy a mechanical deer and help the dec. Setup in a field on an oct night and wait.

Some of these guys really don't seem to be all that smart. They think their posted signs protect them from getting caught  and then plop a feeder or big pile of corn or apples or whatever where any low-flying plane or chopper can see them .... lol. Also, I would imagine the "loose lips sink ships" principle gets a bunch of them too.

Their are several slap on the hands given out in Region 8., in all regions for that matter. Punishments to fit the crime are all to lack, but that's for that other thread.  I see a lot of law enforcement on the west side of Region 8, especially in the state and federal preserve areas.  They also stop several people. I personally been stopped twice, my son once during  deer firearms season. Each time checking that all paperwork was in order. Even checking car inspections and registration. Nice conversation with them. Very nice ECO's, I might add. I commend them on their services. Their doing a very good job here. Region 8 doesn't get the high profile publishing that eastern regions receive, for some reason.  I know the last list for Region 9 , which runs west into the town of Niagara and north to Lake Ontario, was back in 2010, that I can find anyways. It doesn't seem to get the published attention either.

Landtract..the biggest two problems that region 8 has is a defeatist attitude...ie..."You know they're just going to lie anyways"

Couple that with numbers...have you ever looked at the list of officers per Region? It's an eye opener

The only other thing I'll say is it's too bad there have been retirements and moves.

Look at the first line and the 6th line from the DEC list in the Op. If they made it so you had to check in your deer and maybe return unused tags it would slow down those numbers. 

Could you see a non hunting wife or kid or grandpa standing in front of a DEC officer with a gun on his side getting grilled about where they shot said deer with their tag on in. Just asking some lawbreakers to tell the story of the hunt would allow enough rope to hang themselves.

I'm going to stand corrected...hey I do not do this often so....As Landtrac pointed out he has not had an issue and he is West of me and in anouther county...I was just looking at the maps and all regions including 8 has zones...So his zone region 8 and other zone region 8 officers may very well be exceptional..to them I will say Sorry for the generalized attitude...that just puts the spot light on a few ppl within region 8 starting at the top seeing they are responsible for their ppl...the old saying a few bad apples can ruin a bunch comes to mind...but isn't correct. It would be a few bad apples can tarnish...unjustly...a bunch.
