Wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it like some of you computer freaks would...

That would be much more convincing if you didn't almost have 600 posts ;D  just saying.

Funny!  I absolutely never get on a computer or any type of internet connection away from my desk at work.  I only post here to kill a few minutes every once in a while.  I have no doubt others spend a hell of a lot more time on here, Facebook, and all sorts of other sites than I do.

and in the nz we do not get 4 dmp. More like a dmp every four years. If you had less tags to fill, maybe you would not feel the pressure to see so many deer to fill so many tags. Most years, I have a buck tag and 2 bow ml tags.  I see deer from opening day until closing day.  This year, I had a dmp filled it and my buck tag,  That was a godo year for me. I passed a doe early ml and a nice buck late ml.  The problem isnt that you arent seeing deer, you arent seeing enough deer to fill the arms length of tags you have.  An unused tag is not a sign of weakness or poor hunting. I could have easily filled all 4 tags to include an early ml and a late ml deer.  My question is why do I need to. Look I know us NZ guys are the minority here, and pretty much get blown off when we type anything, because we do not understand deer hunting. I can live with that. I will still post.  But I will sure say I am glad that as a NZ guy, I can take the season we have and go with it. If it is good then I am glad.  if it is bad I am still glad.  I was out, I was with friends. I saw some deer. I got away from the huste and bustle of my job for a few days.  That is what hunting is about. Not how many deer tags do you have. How dare you want to use your implement in my season, and I want big bucks, so you cant shoot a small one and if I do not see at least 7 deer a day, the population is gone, and we need to change it all so I do see 7 deer a day.  You guys stress more over deer season, than most do over work. Well I may be in the minority, but I am glad I can go out in the woods and feel safe without glowing.  I am gald I can go out and see deer, and harvest what I choose, not what is chosen for me, and that I have good friends to share the experience with.  If any of you guys want to experience deer hunting the way it is supposed to be, get a hold of me, we will make arrangemsnts for you to come up and see how relaxing and enjoyable it can be rather than how stressed and competitive it can be.

what the F are you talking about?

go up there for real hunting? you need to pull the stick out of your ---

well i guess we have no idea of what we are doing down here right.

oh man we get a ton of tags and now we are a bunch of hillbillys?

ever think you only get a few tags because you live in a 1 horse town.

dont come down on us for having such a HUGE deer population and a need to thin it out every year.

kudos to you for killing what you want, its the same here as well, i could filled ALL my tags

if i so choose to do so but thats none of your concern, must be the pressure of hunting here, right.

as for not seeing deer, I have deer on my land 24/7, there are tons of deer out here thats why we get more tags, so stop hating on us for having more.

why dont you come down here for a real hunting experience, laid back brother, no more comp here than anywhere else.

Hunting is about doing your own thing, thats what its about. some ppl love the comp and stress of hunting and live for it. not me personally but others do, so who are you to judge what others do. because they do thing differant than you it must be wrong. get off your horse.

harvest what I choose, not what is chosen for me you said.

they sure did choose for you if you only get 1 DMP every 4 years

some ppl just cant handle the facts.

So we need less tags out here so hunting would be more enjoyable for us?? go back on your med's kid because you dont know what your talking about.

did you get your BIG BUCK this year? No, well you must need another AR on top of the one you allready have.

Some ppl just dont get it.

well you totally missed the whole point. And the buck I harvested was an 8 point 17 1/2 inch inside spread 8 inch g2 190 pound bruiser. and you?  I love the downstate we matter more mentality, which is what my post eluded to.  And your reapinse just proved it.  My post was just a summary of almost every post of the thread.  Get off your horse and come back to reality.  I get one dmp every four years because I love in a one horse town.  That line made less sense than the rest of your post.  But whatever go with your delusion.  It seems to work for you.

BBBZZZZ that was the bell for second period gym.  Man you boys like to argue and get stressed out.  Real hunting?  Can someone explain that to me please?  I hunt in three states(OH, NJ, NY) and in 4-5 counties and zones in NY.  I just want to make sure I am doing real hunting.  THe trees, seem real, the weather seems real, the deer look and taste real, the excitment, and the dissapointment seem real, the blood trailing seems real, playing the wind and the stages of the rut seem real, the bonds and friends made through hunting seem real.  Can someone please provde a detailed list of what real hunting is so I can experience a real hunt.  Thanks, gotta run I don;t have my hall pass and I don;t want detention.

Thats right PART of the solution and if you dont think if ny got to be known as a big buck state would not bring hunters in i think you are way wrong..

In a way I agree with that.. nobody is knocking down NY's door to come hunting here.  Many states have more to offer and get far more non-resident revenue because of it. Could be just the thing to boost revenues in NY by making it more attractive to hunt bigger bucks here. Not sure that we have the available hunting land like other states, but maybe

Joe,

The flora in NY does not promote the growth of big bucks. NY is not an agricultural state. The soil for the most part is poor. The food plot craze and QDM rhetoric only works in limited situations.

Very true, NY soil does not hold the mineral content as other rich  agricultural states do. I've been preaching this for years but no one believes it. It's a common denominator in growing huge bucks.

Although the soil theory may be somewhat true and it is in a FEW areas! There are trophy class bucks taken in NY every year so the soil is not so bad that we CAN't grow 'em big.  The reason we are not a state known for big bucks is because only a small percentage of the bucks get old enough to be big. You would be hard pressed to find a 5.5 or better buck anywhere in NY on a regular basis except maybe for the remote adirondacks. NY has no idea what the potential is for monster bucks because it has never been allowed to reach it.

for such poor soil, there sure seems to be a lot of agriculture going on even in my one horse town.

Bubba, I'll give you amen for that.  I guess the farmers and orchards, and vineyards around here(Columbia, Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, Westechester, Sullivan, and Rockland) are using fake soil.  I better tell my uncle that is 304th generation farmer up by Syracuse he needs to move. They must be like us fake hunters haha

Hell Bubba we all know NY can grow crops but the soil content does not compare as the big agricultural states. They have more trace minerals and calcium and phosphorus in the soil. Hell my place is smack dab in the middle of Steuben county, farms as far as you cane see.

Then I say scrap the whole thing!  Man it's hard to agrue with you guys! There's no crops, there's some crops, there's farms as far as the eye can see but they're not like Iowa.  I'm getting dizzy with so many adament points being made and then changed in the next post.

Wow, this thread has gone berserk! ???  It seems to cover just about everything except the original notion of shortening the gun season. I think we have hit just about every hot-button issue and jammed them into this thread. We even have a new one that I have never heard before. It seems we are having a civil war about to break out between the north and the south in NYS. ;D  Where the heck that came from, I don't know. I think I hear bits and pieces of the Battle Hymn of the Republic in the background. No..... Maybe that's Dixie.

This is a good thread, we got a smattering of AR, and a little crossbow action, and just about everyone's favorite deer management scheme represented here. Now a little soil analysis. We also have some prize insults (I've been taking notes). This one has potential for beating the antler restriction thread for number of pages....lol.

Now if we could only keep all that crap bottled up in this one thread, it would actually turn out to be a useful topic. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I don't know which one to jump into first.....lol. I think I will try to stay out of this one. Anyone taking any bets on how many days I'll be successful at that? ;D

wztirem- not picking on you or starting a fight but your post is perfect example of big this state is.  In the southern zone there are a lot of farms and orchards that are surronded by big woods.  Perfect flora for big bucks!

It's a big state and every area is different, that's why I agree with broading the AR but not state wide, like up in the ADK where there is 1 deer per mile.  The food sources up there will not permit for large herds.

Without a doubt, there are areas within the state that  are conducive to growing "Big Bucks" which perhaps would benefit from AR. The ADAKs we all know about. The southern zone of NY is not resplendent with amber fields of grain which would constitute habitat that would promote the growth of big deer. The deer habitat has changed dramatically over the last several generations and will continue to mature.Deer populations are out of control in many areas of the State (Westchester,Rockland,Putnam Counties) Agriculture within the state is a dying industry.

AR to me is a seemingly short sighted solution. Carrying capacity of the land which promotes the growth of big deer is the real issue here. The DEC unquestionably does not have the resources to micromanage the deer habitat for a given area and the status quo will remain.

Deer population control is the bottom line. THE DEC BY THEIR STATE MADATE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CONTROL DEER POPULATIONS BY WHAT EVER METHOD(s) THEY DEEM NECESSARY despite what we as hunters have to say!

As I mentioned, with AR comes other problems. How do you balance a deer population within a given DMU with the habitat(carrying capacity of the area) when you have no clear idea of the total population of deer in that area. Take into consideration how much of a given area lies in private hands and is off limits to hunting. "Let a dink live" and you have to kill some other deer. There has to be a balance. What is the balance? How do you attain such a balance? I will tell one thing, nature abhors unbalance and vacuums and will react accordingly! We are better off to let the professionals in the DEC manage the deer herd within the state and with the limited funds that are available to take care of things.

If someone could come up with a definitive scientific plan for the state (per each DMU) to account for the states deer population, how to effectively manage said deer population, increase buck size, protect the public, preserve the habitat, increase hunter satisfaction, control poaching, enforce existing game laws etc. I would welcome it. To date no one can.

Most arguments for change are self serving and do not account for the big picture and the results of such knee jerk changes can ultimately be detrimental to hunting within the state.

If money was not an object, such changes based upon scientific studies would be acceptable. Are we as hunters willing to fund such endeavors, probably not! Alas, we can all continue to bitch and argue about such issues but we have no choice. Change costs money. Pony up or shut Up!

amen to you back strapper you took the words out of my mouth one post the soil sucks no big bucks  never will be next farms everywhere so they have big bucks.  My spleen is bleeding from trying to sort it all out

You guys crack me up. I never said the soil sucked and we can't grow in N.Y. There is different contents and amounts of minerals in the soil that help promote antler growth. In no way did I say the soil sucks, the soil on my farm produces over and over year after year. Lets think twice before twisting words, thanks.
