Dave
Do we still need a muzzleloader permit to use a crossbow? I know we can use it the last 14 days of bow season but can we take either a buck or a doe, like we can with our bow license?
greg54
Yes you do.
landtracdeerhunter
Their was legislation introduced in Albany changing the required muzzleloader license to bow hunting privalage. Two sponser s to the bill. I don't know the outcome of this. I don't seem to be able to post the link due to Next book. Personally, I think a crossbow safety coarse with crossbow license should be adopted.
bkln
Not until retards in Albany actually realize that string and an arrow/bolt is NOT a firearm.... that may take a while though....
DirtTime
Where does it say anything about a muzzleloader qualification? Is there even such a thing as a muzzleloader 'permit'? http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html It says you have to have completed the combo which is archery and the basic hunter education. I am not aware of any specific muzzleloader training certificates. Crossbow falls under archery right? I did not know my old cert for the bow would not allow me to hunt with a crossbow without taking a recert class. I was 22 when I took my archery class. Long time ago. greg54
May take awhile when you have NYBowhunters spilling all kinds of garbage and lies to the politicians in Albany.

The last I read, those two bills got stalled in the Enviro sub-Committee just before the summer recess. So, assuming no changes for Xbow hunting this upcoming season!?! Just so everyone is aware, nothing good regarding Xbow legislation has come out of this sub-Committee, yet!!
landtracdeerhunter
"So a crossbow is still considered a firearm in New York with the muzzleloader privilege license required to hunt with one.
jjb4900
it's fairly simple..........make crossbow users take the archery course and buy the archery privilege, no need to complicate things.

You are talking common sense JJ, and we are talking about NYS DEC... :-) Never confuse these two :-) They are mutually exclusive....

Rob, the page you cited sums it up. But you do not have to have completed the formal combination training course. That is only one of the three options to qualify for getting a crossbow certificate. The other two are to complete the crossbow qualification on line or reading the Regulations guide and copying or cutting out the little qualification certificate provided there. Both of these options are self study programs, you read the material and sign the certificate provided. No formal training course is necessary. As far as the muzzleloader "qualification or permit" issue, I believe they require that you purchase and possess the Muzzleloader Privilege tag if you are going to hunt with the crossbow during the last 2 weeks of the bow season or during any of the muzzleloader seasons. You do not need a separate tag to use the crossbow during the regular rifle season. Hope this helps clear it up. To date I do not believe they put the crossbow certificate under the bow license (which would require crossbow users to complete the bow training course, probably a good idea). Realistically, it's probably too late to do that this year as the Regulations Guides are already being printed up.
Dave
Guys I used the wrong termonology when I used the word permit. What I was referring to was the on line certificate that you print out and sign for Crossbow and have to carry it with you when using the crossbow. I filled out one last year and wondered it you have to fill it out every year. So all you need is a Muzzleloader license and the certificate. nyslowhand
Yeah, that online cert is more of a safety overview sign-off. Go back and look, but pretty sure the one I used from last year was only good for that 2014-2015 season.
landtracdeerhunter
The crossbow certificate in the hunting guide is nothing more than a liability sign off for New York state.
JimMac
yes you need to fill one out for each year http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/98061.html print and fill out and add the date http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/xbowcert.pdf Edited August 10, 2015 by JimMac
