ants
1/10th the cost of a new vehicle tops. I dont know about you, but I dont dump my cars until they are damn near shot. Only ever sold 1 to anyone other than the junk yard. I know what it takes to keep cars running. You are ex-LEO arent you? Yes I am… Im sure you have had cars that you kept running until they just died. But how reliable were they? Police cars get beat on..plain and simple. And all of the ex PD Crown vics I see converted to taxi cabs look like $hit. A Deputy Sheriff lives down the street. He takes his car home. It has 135K on it and its a rusted pile of crap. I guess it runs ok but the floors are rusted, the fenders are rusted and half the accessories in it don't work. No A/C right now, passenger window won't go down, it smokes a little …Police cars just get abused and become unreliable way sooner than privately owned cars. Thats just a fact. mmkay
gald you admit you are lucky. Not many of you do. If I was offered the pensions I would take it...BUT I would know that it would make me feel guilty knowing that my friends/neighbors/family are basically working to support me. good night...enough bashing of public sector unions. peoples opinions are too deeply rooted delve to deep nto this topic. This was rather civil and I thank you all for that. Without a dialog, its hard to understand where others are coming from. to the fireman / police - be safe and thank you for your dedication. but remember that not everyone is as lucky as you are, or will they enjoy the security and leisure time that your collective barginning agreements have granted you. ants
When I said that I was "lucky" I meant that I was lucky that I made it 27 years with out getting killed or too seriously hurt. As far as you feeling "guilty" for collecting a pension (if you had chose to) how do you know how you would feel unless you actually did the job, (on the street not as a desk ornament) for 20+ years?? Fact is you don't. You sound bitter and jealous..but thats ok. Im use to hearing it. I have to cut my leisure time short now. I have yet another Doctors appointment for one of a few different injuries I got ,while working my ex cake walk job. The Dr. is only a few minutes away so I should be able to get right back to my life of leisure in an hour or so. Your welcome.
mmkay
Desk ornament? - I'm much more then that, i'm a loafer, slacker and all around goof off. But i'm quite good at it and quite good at making $$$ but most importantly, i'm a tax payer that is tired of paying NYS high taxes. NYS is what it is. It won't change so I'll move. but pretty soon, many the productive folks are going to leave. who will contribute to then? As I see it, a retired civil servant collecting a pension and not working for his/her $'s is no different than a welfare receiptient you're right, I am bitter...not jealous...i'm pissed because I've lived here all my life and i'm being forced out because I no longer feel like paying over $80,000 a year in taxes. Some years I pay more than $100K (if I sell something). The harder I work, the more rental properties I have, the more people I employee the more that is taken in taxes. last hint...go out on disability...isn't tax free? i'm done....BOHICA

growalot
Boy that's a tough conversation as with many things 6:1, half a dozen to the other.....My problem with early retirements at such a High # for civil servants is....... when they then go on to get yet another government job and stay collecting that retirement...several ppl out this way that I know of do this..just not right again IMO
ants
If you wrestle with a pig sooner or later you learn the pig is enjoying itself. ..maybe I'm the pig!...enjoy your white man's welfare enjoy your bitter, angry jealousy towards people who WORKED and risked their lives every day. …………What do you think of true welfare ….generational welfare??? Ya know ..people who go on the public dole as soon as they turn a certain age with out even trying to work... Why do you use the words pig and white man??……oh jealous bitter one, should I add racist to the list?
jjb4900
I've heard more than one person say "if I had to do it all over again I'd be a cop or fireman"...........now I know why. I've also heard that many of them retire and move down south taking with them the pension that NY pays, sounds like a pretty sweet deal. mmkay
Whiteman welfare is what the old timers called government work.. I have lots of relatives that are cops and fireman...BTW my fireman uncles..now retired called there jobs 'dozing for dollars' My intent is not really convince you of anything...I just want others to know in addition to welfare parasites. ..others are screwing them just as bad Edited August 4, 2015 by mmkay

Or do you not have the balls to say that to their faces???? Some would ask if you were "Too pussy"….not my words of course. And do you ever , either on this sight or others, openly rail against generational welfare parasites who have never worked and have no intention of ever working?? mmkay
Not while that are working...while they are working they provide a valuable and often times dangerous service. I only wish they worked to 65..if they can no longer work do to illness or injury. .then retire on disability. But if they retire in their 4o's or 50' they are no better then the normal welfare scum. Just my opinion This was fun...but needs to end...it's a hunting site...some don't like political debates here...I said my last on this topic for now Best regard A bitter taxpayers. DirtTime
This was fun...but needs to end...it's a hunting site...some don't like political debates here...I said my last on this topic for now Seeing this is more or less a political thread to begin with, why was in posted in the General area in the first place? Just because it comes from a "News" site, doesn't mean it's not political. What do taxes and new cars for State Troopers have to do with actual news if not political? It seems people are getting liberal with what is news and what is political. FFS! They turned my ammo question into a battle field and then a joke. It's how things work around here. Do what I am starting to do, get over it and move on! As for my thoughts on the cruiser issue? Police, fire, ambulance, all of them...Paying to keep their vehicles in good shape shouldn't even be an issue! Perhaps you would prefer they go back to using horses and wagons, or all foot patrol. Because that would make sense. Or would it? Then you would have a problem when law enforcement, fire, rescue, etc. needed new Nike's. Well, it hasn't helped crime rates. Might be worth a try to put the 'Bobbies' back on the beat' as they say in England.
