Pygmy
I have seen a few during NY/Pa gobbler season, but not nearly as many as I have seen in Ontario gobbler season..I have shot 3 while gobbler hunting in Ontario and see at least one up there nearly every year.. It might be because I tend to hunt more open, flat land in Canada, while here at home I hunt more in the woods..
genesee_mohican
A couple pics the coyotes were carrying fawns. Cool, I'd like to see the trail cam pics. Pretty lucky to get 2 trail cam pics of a coyote carrying a fawn. I had one pic of a yote carrying a woodchuck this spring. I know every area is different as far as deer populations go, but here we have a very healthy deer population and the coyotes are well established. Mr VJP
I call them in during spring turkey quite often, and I'm hunting the woods of the Catskills.

Curmudgeon
So, you guys believe they are killing deer then post photos of coyotes you killed attempting to scavenge gut piles. Scavenging and killing are totally different things. You aren't supporting your own argument. DEC doesn't want to end coyote hunting to reduce deer populations because they know coyote hunting has virtually no impact on deer populations. Except in a few areas where >40% of the population annually it is a waste of time. There are always more moving in. A ME state biologist told me he considered it the "hopeless war on coyotes". On a macro level, coyotes impacting deer in New York is a myth.

On a macro level, coyotes impacting deer in New York is a myth. And every other of the other states that have open season on what they call call..The Vermin? Of course they are going to take a free meal and they will also kill. Not just deer. You are overloaded with them and you will have no hunting as what they dont kill they will run them off. Have to tell ya that i have not heard a pack this year yet. A few lone single song dogs over on the base here and there but no packs on this corner yipping and yapping and then the pack on this corner across the road yapping back. I know you keep going back to your biologist about restocking yotes but i will promise you... War on them 24/7 365 and you will be rid of the problem. I would probably have to agree with you on the Macro Level statement! Edited September 21, 2015 by Four Season Whitetails
PREDATE
The problem is this; a decrease in their population will only cause them to have larger litters, it's a fact. Yes you can lower their numbers in a certain area, but they merely shying away from hunting pressure Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

Five Seasons
I don't ever see them when hunting. Admitting I've never gone after them will calls either so I wont claim that I'm doing my part. Honestly, I just have a hard time hunting anything I'm not going to eat. If I ever get a crack while deer hunting I'll take it, but time is too short for me to specifically target them.
growalot
About seeing them...one turkey season I watched a female moving pups ...out of range just as it was getting light..that was some scary sounds at ground level...and during gun I shot one and bow saw a 3 legged one move through...not sure if it was someones trap getaway but he was still able to move dang fast... Now that doesn't include the ones that stalked and circled me as I walked to my stand or the one that I rounded a field corner on and he was on a full run headed straight at me...didn't shoot because he saw me before my mind realized it was a yote and not someones chow dog. he turned into the wood line...he was red and had like a mane type amount of fur around his neck..figure hunters on neighbors kicked him out. Predates buck...down in Alfred hills I have seen and the guys have shot what we thought were odd shaped deer...they seemed shorter in both leg and body...Over the years I just assumed it was something that occurred down there due to the steepness of the terrain they move through over time they were developing bodies shaped for the ground they cover... When they are running around your property at all hours of the day and night there is very little energy put forth. When someone really has a problem they will see them in broad daylight. Alot.
