DirtTime
I only have two. They are pretty old compared to what most of you are probably using. But, they still work great so why stop using them. The bottom set I have had since I was 14, it's 30 years old still my go-to. It's an old Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Pro Plus, on a 7' Zebco Rhino stiff action rod. The top was a gift from my mom when I was 21 so that's 23 years old and still catches fish. It's a Quantom Lite Combo. Reel is a Quantom QL50, on a 5' Quantom Lite medium action rod. I still love using these fishing poles. I don't fish from a boat so they are both great for 'fan' casting from shore. Caught my first Walleye on the Abu Garcia, and my first Northern on the Quantom. I can't count bass and even panfish caught on either. When the Abu Garcia was new I even used for bullhead fishing at night because it had ( it's doesn't glow anymore ) a glow in the dark tip.
Lawdwaz
Ain't that weird, I haven't used a closed face real since I was 6 years old. You're still using one, dang.......... Maybe it's our age difference? My kids use them to this day but they aren't too experienced as they never had much interest. You ever use an open faced (radical design, I know) reel rob? DirtTime
Open face, closed face? Golf terms to correct a bad hook or shank.
Lawdwaz
A spinning reel to me is an open faced reel. Those reels of yours I'd call "bait casters". Agree or not, give me your thoughts.

Yes I know. If you don't set the tension and break right for different lure weights you will get the crows nest from hell.
Lawdwaz
Yea, NOT closed faced reels...I f'd up the reply. Typing too fast; my brain and fingers are way the heck out of sync. Again. I saw where you mentioned the word Zebco and my thoughts went to a Zebco 33 or 303 or whatever it was I used as a little tyke. Decent stuff for what it was at the time..........shortly after the early days for me I started using a Garcia Mitchell 300. I still have a couple/few of them around. I'm pretty sure one of them is in the boat right now as a back up. Made in France IIRC............ All good rob..........

Elmo
I have the Ugly Stik. I use that thing for everything. Maybe that's why I suck at fishing and that's why I don't do enough of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
BigVal
I use baitcasters for frogs and flipping, pretty much other than that spinning. Nice rigs.

The_Real_TCIII
I still use a Shimano Bantam bait caster that I bought at the worlds fishing fair at BPS in Missouri in 1987. My dad and I each bought one and while playing with them on the plane we said "crap, we bought left handed reels!!" Lol we didn't realize you cast and switch hands and reel with the right. I watched a bunch of fishing shows when we got home and that's what the "pros" do. Tl;dr I reel a spinning reel with my left hand and a baitcaster with my right

Tl;dr I reel a spinning reel with my left hand and a baitcaster with my right The Abu Garcia is a left handed, I use the same as an open face spinner. The Quantom is a right handed, and it did take some time to get used to. I fish a lot with 'buzz bait' spinning lures with these set ups. I just prefer the way they keep tension when fishing surface lures. The crank ratio on both are good to spin that buzzer across the surface and not end up reeling to fast and lifting it. Just a preference.
The_Real_TCIII
I agree, bait casters for cranking. I hate them for jigging because of the little bit of play. Maybe better built reels don't have that
DirtTime
I don't get a lot of slack with jigs or twitch baits. I like to set the break a bit light, maybe a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch for those.
dbHunterNY
I've got an open faced spinning reel and bait casting reel. wife and daughter each have cheaper spin casting reels. the bait caster is setup with a weedless finesse worm KVD perfect plastic infused scent on a gamakatsu hook used for pitching and jigging in close. PITA to switch lures. most of the time I'm using the spinning reel and switching up lures or bait. don't remember poles sizes or specifics. KVD perfect plastics of different sizes with matching hooks is usually on my poles. fish a lot of cover laden ponds and lakes. got sick of reeling in trash and losing expensive crank baits. I'll take some pictures maybe when I get home.

Every kid who fished, in my neighborhood anyway, started off with the old Zebco 202. The dark green plastic, closed face reel. Then you moved up to the Zebco 33. Same reel but in shinny stainless steel..Oooohhh. I still have a 33 somewhere in the garage. They worked pretty good. I had an open face roast beef sandwich for lunch last week and it was pretty damn good too...
